I've been at making games for RPG Maker for almost 20 years! No, they're not ALL Dragon Kingdoms games, just most of 'em.

Why Not!
28 (yes, old) year old male from Southern NJ. I've been doing this on and off since 1998! I was first inspired by an article in a 1995 issue of Nintendo Power about RPG Tsukuru Super Dante for the Super Famicom. When I first read the article I was super excited...I immediately started to write my RPG...I drew maps on graph paper, wrote dialog, created items/monsters/characters/spells (I might even still have the stuff somewhere...).
Wow, I started almost the same way. I say almost, because I had made a couple games before, but nothing serious, until that article came out. I got my first computer in 1997, but didn't see anything on RPG Maker... Then came the July '98 issue of EGM (so, really June) and a "Coming to America" article. Sometime later, I did a search for RPG Maker and found Super Dante RPG Maker 2. The original, RPG Tsukuru Super Dante, didn't save any progress, which is a shame, because I wanted to have something of a Dragon Kingdoms Zero type thing. I remember Ankylo's Realm as well as the short-lived RPG Tsukuru Vault. In addition, I think I might have some of that Japanese midi music from The NeXus days.
Interesting note: The last time (before Monday) the U.S. Minimum Wage went up, RPG Maker hadn't been translated yet, Final Fantasy VII was about to be released, Hanson was still making songs, Titanic wasn't released yet, cell phones were still huge, and the Playstation was still waiting for that killer (N64 and Saturn killer) game that would make more people buy it. Yes, that was September 1, 1997.
IGL: ika game library
And, apparently, this.
In all, just so far, that makes:
-3D RPG Game Editor
-Stencyl
-IGL game library
-GameMakerStudio.NET
-Dia RPG Builder
As alternatives to Enterbrain's RPG Makers. And three of the five have already been released.

I think the future is in customization, and IGL is a great step toward that. Could this be the beginning of the end of dependence on ASCII/Enterbrain's RPG Maker series? It looks like we may finally have something that is easy to get into that is outside the crappy Scenario RPG Maker RM95 clone.
Just in the next year, we will have
-3D RPG Game Editor. Actually, this one is already out. It still needs some tweaks, though. Overall, it's not the best thing to look for... not really 3D, at that, but isometric with a fancy camera system- which can probably be done with other makers. Woo, all we do is turn the map.
-Stencyl. Look out, Game Maker, as there is supposedly a really nice and easy kit from which to make a variety of games. Sounds good, but can it deliver?
-And IGL. This looks like it will take the remaining RPG Maker 2000/2003 "market", and stands a good chance at overtaking RPG Maker XP.
By the way, it seems as if all is quiet from Enterbrain, and no new RPG Makers are expected any time soon. Now's our chance.

I didn't know until now that August was actually a name. Learn something new everyday, I suppose.
Anyway...
I'm Thomas Eskew, a 27 year old male that likes to make RPGs and draw comics. For most of the past nine years, Dragon Kingdoms has been the focus of my indie game development. I started making games in September 1998. I have made other things over time, with mixed results:
Dragon Warrior Remix, 1999. Just a standard DW remake on RPG Maker 95.
Dungeon Explorer, 1999 (unreleased). A dungeon crawler, before I found out that name was already used by Hudson in the early '90s.
Celestial Descent, 2001-02. What I really hoped would be something great turned out not so great, mainly due to limitations in graphics and in telling the story.
Dragon Warrior for RM2k, 2002 (unreleased). Advanced version of the 1999 game.
Where Legends Are Made, 2004 (unreleased). I briefly was in charge of developing this, as Rowen had lost interest. I really didn't get too far with it, however. Basically, you fought other characters in an arena, RPG-style. You could also break the town if you wanted. Development returned to Rowen sometime that summer.
Ghostlight August Project, 2006. A release for Demo Day at Ghostlight (now Township Games), it was a themed game that was made in three hours.
All in all, I've made eight complete games. Five are Dragon Kingdoms games, two are Dragon Quest remakes, and the other is a three-hour contest entry.
I live in Florida, a hot and humid state full of seniors. Hooray for me. I recently graduated from college (December 2006), as a B.A.S. (Bachelor's Applied Science) in Computer Technology Management at St. Petersburg College. It seems that I might have to leave the state (or at least this part) to get into my career.
Until then, it looks like I'll be staying with the local supermarket, Publix. It's not so bad, however, because on July 11, 2008, I'll have completed five years with enough time to count toward the stock plan (I've actually been there since 1999, but I didn't work enough hours a week to count until 2004). Then, I'll be 100% entitled to it. Right now, I can use none of it. For those in the Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, or Tennessee areas, or those considering moving to those states, Publix is really not a bad option for getting a job (but be prepared to work, most stores are VERY BUSY).

Webcomics!
And, your name reminds me. No one mentioned Darken? (yes, it's an actual webcomic)
http://www.darkencomic.com/
It even updates three times a week.

Non-RM Engines: What's stopping you?
Ease of use. The map thing used to be a BIG deal for me, but nowadays I make my own graphics and such. I'd probably use other engines if they actually showed me what needs to be done for an RPG (and why don't they have any templates, anyway?). Why reinvent the wheel?
Then, when I get better with the program, THEN I can jump through the hoops that Game Maker, ika, Sphere, etc. are expecting. Maybe Stencyl will be a shove in the right direction?

"<insert text>" <name> murmured to <him/her>self while shuffling through the dark chamber hallway. The only light source resonating from the stairway leading down into somewhere. It blanketed <name>'s face with a dull red haze.
As <name> drew closer to the entrance, dark figures began to shift and dance in the darkness. Playing with <his/her> eyes. Barely visible. All peering. <Name>'s shadow's silhouette began to shift and move and a raw smell of burnt flesh crept into <his/her> nose.
<His/Her> steps echoed and with the echo, a sound accompanied... "<insert text>..." a whisper. "...<insert text>" All around <him/her> the whispers came.
"<insert text>!" <name> screamed. "<insert text>?"
A clicking sound. Behind <him/her>. It began to grow louder until the sound was in sequence with the whispers. <Name> began to laugh menacingly. Flashes of lightning cackled around <him/her>. This was it.
Phantasy Star II did that at the hero's house and the Central Tower (and this was in 1989!). Yes, even "There was a knock at the door" seems to convey more action than Rudo just talking out of the middle of nowhere.

I like this Evilness Scale idea. Just have a variable keep track of Evilness. 100 == Holy, 0 == True Neutral, -100 == Really Evil.
I have the same kind of thing planned, when the main character's Alignment Points are within a certain range, characters react accordingly. (I actually rediscovered it looking through notes for Dragon Kingdoms VI- yet to be released- from 2005, ALWAYS write down your ideas.)
When AP gets above, say +70, people will start to think the hero is Mr. Goody-Two-Shoes and get annoyed. Yes, this includes other people in your party. Some of them will even leave (temporarily, of course) if your AP is outside of a certain range (usually, plus or minus 50 points from yours). And, of course, if your AP goes below -90, William will stop accepting items from you, and if you hit -100... well, you'll have to see for yourself. Same goes for +100.
Example (not actual) AP ranges
Thomas has +10 AP. After reaching Renzan Town, if Akahr's AP drops below -40 or goes above +60, consequences may occur.
Jonathan has -20 AP. At +30 or -70, he may leave.
Of course, this will be tweaked so you won't go by yourself, except at extremes. And you can always go forward or back on the scale. It will take longer to change sides, though, as it will be hard to convince people you've changed your ways.
