VIDEOWIZARD'S PROFILE

I've been at making games for RPG Maker for almost 20 years! No, they're not ALL Dragon Kingdoms games, just most of 'em.

Naming your characters

author=narcodis link=topic=1644.msg25923#msg25923 date=1217572919
Does anyone else get as caught up with this as I do? I seriously spend days with trying to decide names for characters in the back of my head.

FORMERLY KNOWN AS DRAGONSHADOW

Wait a minute, the DragonShadow from the early, early RM2k days? I didn't realize you were still in the community.

As for naming characters, I look both for meaning, and what sounds good. Sometimes I'll add a letter or two to the name to make it different, if it is overly common.

And Little Wing Guy, make it Stefan and David, and it'll be better than just "Dave and Steve".

Using Final Fantasy IV as an example, it's strange how the main character (and two others) have the most common names. Yeah, you have Yang, Rydia, Palom, Porom, Edge, FuSoYa, Tellah, Kain, and Cid, all fairly exotic names- and then you have Cecil, Rosa, and Edward. What happened there?

Cecil has the most common name of any Final Fantasy hero!

<FF2 through FF12, in order>
Firion, Luneth, Cecil, Bartz, Terra, Cloud, Squall, Zidane, Tidus, Yuna, You, Vaan.

REVIEW: Wilfred the Hero (Teo Mathlein / Brandon Abley)

It's been a couple years now since I last played this gem of RPG Making, now let's see if the game has stood the test of time.

One thing is immediately apparent- the title screen doesn't have the default RM2k3 load screen, instead, it is a custom screen that says "New Story", "Bookmarks", and "Quit". The art style is similar to that in Sunset over Imdahl, which makes sense, since it's made by the same artist.

The intro starts off just outside the Evil Demon-Dragon's lair, which I assume is the final area. Therefore, the intro is actually referencing events that occur in Wilfred the Squire, a prequel to this game. You know you're in for a great experience when events are done that well. Wifred and Kyr-Stan have their own animations, rather than being in the default pose the whole intro. There's actually movement!

The inside of the final area is a lot more lush than expected, and yes, they even comment on it. This, along with Final Fantasy-caliber music (seriously), if not even better than some of the tracks in those games, and a custom system for stat and ability improvement- even if it seems a little overwhelming at first.

You use Skill Junctions to gain abilities, and start off in the center. The farther from the center, generally, the better the ability. However, some are considered UNETHICAL, which, yes, effects the alignment of the characters. Also, there are requirements for certain skills, keeping you from going for Hoi Polloi at level 3. I seem to remember it being slightly later to reach 25 Strength and Agility (you start with 10).

The first levels go fast. It only takes 5 EXP to reach level 2, after all. Just walk up a little bit, and the battle mechanics are explained. Nice. Don't worry about getting worn out from multiple battles, you recover fully after each battle. An important thing here- re-equip before encountering any battle. You will gain 2 strength points and 4 health points by doing so.

And the arena DOES have a purpose, contrary to what the guy says. Namely, if you've played the game before (as I have), you can use it to max out on stats (which occurs at or around level 9, if you don't buy a level or two). I do it to get 25 in Strength and Agility to use a certain power move. Oh, and if you use Ethical and Unethical skills, your characters' portraits will change (only in battle, though). I usually give Wilfred the Ethical ones and Kyr-Stan the Unethical ones.

So, here's the breakdown
Graphics ++++++++++ (10) They couldn't be any better than they are now!
Sound ++++++++++ (10) Among the best in an RPG Maker game.
Balance ++++++ (6) It's a little off (nearly getting killed in the first battles), but still alright.
Atmosphere ++++++++++ (10) Couldn't ask for anything better in RM.
Overall +++++++++ (9) Again, one of the top RM games.

Overall, Wilfred the Hero is an amazing game everyone should experience at least once.

Reviews of Dragon Fantasy II and Mystery Slot 3 are coming.

Yeah it was. And I still couldn't do EVERYTHING
he did in the map. But it did allow me to learn how
to use the chip well enough to make my own now.

She. Meiscool's female.
And I thought I saw a similar map before, and it turns out I was right!

An entire page without a single screenshot? For shame!

Yep.

It's a nice map, but every time I see that set- I don't know if it's because of the long development time- I think of Dragon Kingdoms V, which uses the same set (but different trees), or Ara Fell.

Only thing I don't understand, is why the bottom of the cliff changes to green in some places, but not in others. There is a green top part somewhere in the set.

Nice use of the winter foliage for the splash effect, too! :)

Play Something! Day Sign Ups [August 1st, 2008]

I plan to play
-Wilfred the Hero (again, to celebrate the fact it's ON again)
-Dragon Fantasy II
and one more game I haven't decided on yet, probably an obscure one.

The Backloggery Forum

The level 70 bug is where you could actually LOSE stats (1 or 2 points) for certain characters with a level up from levels 71-99. Either Square stopped defining stats after level 70, or they did it on purpose.

I don't know if the Edward getting the highest stats thing continues in this version, though.

...the difficulty is much higher (but not so high that you can't do anything about it; one of the reviews noted a "trip into 'hardcore gaming 101'," and that's what it pretty much is)

I thought it was harder. Seriously, I ran out of potions in the Mist Cave, something that never happened in the PSX "Hard Type", and certainly not the SNES "Easy Type". Heck, the Mist Dragon was the weakest monster in that cave, so long as it isn't attacked when it's mist.

And they fixed the Level 70+ bug. And by fix, I mean an entirely new system. I've only made it to Kaipo as of yet, so I haven't seen it in action.

Long RPG Maker Games

With how long ago Dragon Destiny came out (2004, I think), I'm sure any PC bought in the last three years or so could handle it. But the difficulty may be an issue.

Also, it seems like any RM RPG that is more than five hours long could be considered a long RPG. Most RPGs in parts could essentially be four to six five-hour RPGs. And how much of the length is from grinding? Dragon Quest games and games derived from them (Dragon Saga IV, Three the Hard Way- the item drop rate comes to mind) have most of the play time spent fighting monsters.

Five hours is good, because you can play it in a day or a week, depending on the amount of time spent on it each day. This also increases replay value- if you didn't spend TOO long on the RPG, you probably will want to see some of the extras that might have been included, whereas you won't with a 40+ hour RPG.

I thought I had a long RPG, but it was only seven hours long! How do people make it 40-50 hours, then?

Anheuser-Busch agrees to US$52 billion sale

A giant Belgian beer company will become the world's largest brewer with a takeover of Anheuser-Busch, the maker of the iconic U.S. labels Budweiser and Bud Light.

InBev acquires Anheuser-Busch

InBev's signature brands already include Beck's and Stella Artois.

The acquisition of Anheuser-Busch -- the largest brewer in the U.S. with 48 per cent of market share -- would make InBev the world's fourth-largest consumer product company, and make it the world's largest brewer.

Craziness!

Budweiser is probably the only american beer I've enjoyed. I can't stand Coors, or most anything else from the US. And now its owned by a Belgium company. I wonder what'll happen?

And now its owned by a Belgium company.

The Belgium government apparently just collapsed. Wonder what that's going to do to InBev?
