FLYINGJESTER'S PROFILE
I am the Jester.
I make games using JavaScript, C, C++, Mercury, Java, Assembly (amd64 and UltraSparc) and Python. I used to use Sphere a lot, but I'm more into C/C++ and Mercury nowadays. I still use JavaScript and embed it sometimes, and I usually use Python for build systems and system management.
I wrote TurboSphere, which is a recreation of the Sphere Game Engine with a number of major improvements. I'm not really working on it anymore.
I'm surely going to finish making a game someday. I mean, sooner or later, it's bound to happen. Right?

Did you search Spheredev for isometric engines? The Majestic Map Engine had an isometric branch (which has been abandoned), and the Brutal Map Engine is isometric (but not quite perfect). There might be more I don't know about.

Fair enough. I never use the bar, so I guess it doesn't affect me nearly as much.
I am disapointed thetag isn't included in the BBcode here.

No, it's not. It looked fine in dragon quest, because the art style was the same. It looked fine in final fantasy, because the art style was the same.
Look at the overworld image. It's a cartoony headed character in a very 2D-pixel-art world.
Now look at the battle images. They are much more photorealistic, much higher detail, and look hand drawn.
Those two things are not just different images, they're different styles. It doesn't look like the same tools, same inspiration, same artist, or even same team worked on both scenes.
And I'm not even saying this is bad thing. But that's what was asked.

I don't think any of those battle scenes look like they are the same game as that overhead image. Because the style is so incredibly different. On the on ehand, you have pixel art. Then you have a more hand drawn battle scene.
It just looks like two completely different games because of the two completely different styles.

How did you get into game development? TELL US EVERYTHING
That's a different question, though. Case in point, I have an answer for this one, but not the other.
But perhaps I'm the only one...

Sphere is still quite capable. I've heard commercial games have been released in RPG Maker, and Sphere has the capability to vastly outdo RPG Maker (freedom and limitations wise, to be sure), although very few people put in that kind of effort to Sphere. It's still being developed, too, and the new version will be more compatible with releasing games on steam (and commercial games in general) than the earlier versions.
