I guess we'd need to see this map complete with all the people that is ever going to be in it, to be able to tell if all that empty space is being used appropriately. But my gut instinct tells me it isn't. ...Not to mention that if this "dungeon simulator" is something the players will need to visit many times during the game, it is best to put it near the entrance for easy access.

That's a really nice map! I love all the little people, they're so full of personality. Do they actually move or is this kind of a static scene?

One thing bothers me, though, and is that everything looks a bit flat. You can barely tell the walls from the floor, and at first glance I thought those stairs where a closed store or something... I think you could improve the 'readability' of this scene by playing with the colors and the contrast a little. For example, you don't really need to look at those tracks, do you? Then obscure that entire area. Likewise, add a subtle gradient to the bottom part of the wall; this will help to "frame" the platform so the focus is on the people. And as for the stairs, I think they need to be mostly in darkness. Again, place the transition near the bottom, to aid the illusion of depth.

If you're not working with too strict a palette and if you think this is worth your trouble, give it a try. You may actually like the result. =P

The one thing that looks odd in this otherwise perfect map, is the light "coming out" of the fireplace. And I say "coming out" because it doesn't really look like it's coming out of it, but rather, like it's just pasted on top. Bear in mind that inside a fireplace the light wouldn't spread in the same way that light coming from a window would. Not only is the light from a fire not nearly as bright as daylight, but also, most of that light would first bounce off the walls of the fire place and then come out... think about it.

Yeah, it's not a big deal. xD But it's also not a big of a deal to fix it, so, try it if you want. Or just keep that in mind for future maps. =)

My first thought when I watch this screen is: "Damn! Are those some short desks or what?" The ones next to the tiny stools don't look too bad, as they could almost be passed as desks for kindergartners. But the one next to the chair looks particularly silly because the chair itself is probably taller than the desk, and that doesn't make much sense. =P

Besides that, try adding some some flavor to the floor texture. Maybe something like -this-, so it loses some of its current monotony.

New Submission Rule

Sounds good. That's a bit of a "common sense" rule though, but it's a step on the right direction to ensure the proper use of the site.

Although, I'd wish this could be taken a step further. Custom facesets/artwork should go on their own section independent from screens; Mapshots are probably best fitted for development blogs or the screenshoot topic/feedback section; etc. Anyone can do this simply by adding custom pages to their profiles, and would make for better organized/more efficient gamepages.

It would be even better if there was an "automatic" way that made it uploading all kinds of media, even music and video, as easy as uploading screenshots (And no, our current, plodding, media submission system doesn't cut it). Specially for those of us who don't know much of html/bbc/css/or are lazy. Also, additions made to custom pages are not notified to subscribers, which is something that can discourage the use of this otherwise neat feature... Oh, but I'm probably day-dreaming at this point. Nevermind. =)

I don't know about you all, but a Female Squall for FF8 would have been cool.

"Unacceptable" is kind of extreme for simply posting some drawings (unless it's plain porn). Reproachable maybe, as are some of comments that came afterwards... But really, I wish people could draw a line between reality and fiction. Imo, is inadequate to speak of "objectification" when referring to fictional characters, as they're in a sense objects -literary devices more like- no matter how well they're written. The kind of objectification we want to combat is the one that occurs when people misunderstands and/or extrapolates what they see in media into every day life; Something I want to believe most creators and consumers know not to encourage/do.

Discussion about fictional characters should remain firmly grounded on terms of "quality" or "investment" so as to avoid conflicts. =/

Actually, the original is to the left. Check UPRC's post again. The colors did change at some point but I reverted it... Uh, Sorry? =P

I don't know about you all, but a Female Squall for FF8 would have been cool.

Now, now, let's be fair. It's not like those drawings are pitchs from SE for a FF8 remake (though, I don't see it past them xD). Whoever drew those didn't had the character's personality in mind, just it's sex-appeal. That kind of fanart is made by a specific subgroup of people for a specific subgroup of people. And it's not like it's only men who do it, women do it too. You just have to take a look at DevianArt to see tons of that gender-bender/sexed-up stuff. (That doesn't make it right, but I don't think it's wrong-wrong either.)

Also, let's face it. Often times videogame characters are not exactly dressed for battle, so the arguments about not exposing certain parts of the body are a bit moot. It creates a bit of a disconnect, I suppose, but you just have to adjust your suspension of disbelief... Otherwise, all characters would have to use full body armor, and the helmets would ruin their pretty animu hairdos. =P

Edit: I was referring strictly to the whole "exposed to injury" argument, not so much about the "investment". That's a different ball game.

What do YOU look for in a (good) story? (In a video game)

I like how Illusion of Gaia is on the lowest end of the spectrum. I really didn't like that game, and the stupid vampire boss was the last freaking straw (not to mention the LIMITED HEALING ITEMS that can never be replenished)

Don't hate the game 'cause you suck at it, bro. =B

I don't mind Illusion of Gaia appearing to the right on that list, after all it's an old game. But I find it appalling that it's at the very bottom AND below Golden Sun... I mean, Golden Sun is nothing but your typical "We must retrieve the crystals lit the lighthouses" kind of story. And it's very systematic in its delivery: reach town/beat dungeon -> get new psynergy -> repeat. Nothing memorable ever happens. And the fact that the story is full of endless dialogue, filler locations, insufferable navigation, etc. in order to milk TWO (identical) games out of this very basic premise, is shameful! Also, it's not that the characters are likable, it's simply that they're not "hate-able" either.

Now, Illusion of Gaia is a diamond in the rough. Imagine setting to discover the world with your childhood friends. Getting to know different places, their people, their customs, etc. Imagine that at every steep something new and fascinating, or scary, or thought-provoking happens. Out of the top of my head: you get stranded at sea and nearly starve to death, then one of your friend dies, another risk his life to end a slave operation, other two fall in love and decide to give-up adventuring to settle down, your pet pig sacrifices itself to feed a starving village, and then you go and save the world in more than the material way... This game is like, deep, man! At least for its time.

Uh, and don't even get me started on Xenosaga and all that rubbish ahead of it... Final Fantasy? Dragon Quest? What is all that!???
