Accepting Criticism

So, what does "accepting" criticism really means to you guys? Because for what I've seen, it simply means to nod to all form of criticism that come your way, like if it was a proof of humility to not say anything... I fundamentally disagree with this. If you think someone has given you poor criticism is perfectly reasonable to manifest your disagreement and defend your position. Otherwise, it sends the message that criticism is infallible and this is as much true as games being infallible.

I watched the whole ordeal with this Konstandin game, and I have to say that the author's initial reaction was justified. I saw Cashmere first version of the review and I agree that it was lacking in detail. Words more, words less, this is what the author wanted to let Cashmere know, and still he was mindful enough to say things like: "I'm not attacking you, I'm not offended, I respect your opinion, you don't need to amend the review, etc" Things din't need to escalate from there, and is only lamentable that they did...

Here's the thing. Just as the author later made the mistake to assume Cashmere wasn't being honest with things like the amount of time it took him to beat the game, it is also a mistake to assume someone is not being honest when they're explicitly telling you they respect your opinion, or that they're not speaking from an offended point of view. These are not grounds to antagonize that person with a "you do sound offended" or "you're being sarcastic" but rather to argument: "you're wrong and this is why".

I think is important to understand that is completely possible to have a strong opinion about something and still not being offended. And as long as things are being discussed politely, even if it that politeness feels insincere, (Although, if you ask me, politeness has never been about sincerity. xD) you have to take people's words at face value and not complicate things unnecessarily. Misunderstandings abound even without pointing finger, so really, we have nothing to gain going down that road voluntarily.

Now, returning to my original point, and I'm sorry this sound like a rant (because it is a rant. =P) but I really feel this is the case sometimes. People make all kinds of dismissive arguments to justify poor criticism; I see this all the time with reviews: "Reviews are subjective" "It got accepted, that means it's good enough" "I've seen worse reviews" "You should be glad someone took their time to write a review of your game" "Go write your own review!" etc. (Really, I could be here all day) But if we were to replace the word "review" for the word "game" in each of those sentences, I think we would all see how bad that looks... So I guess what I'm trying to say is that criticism is not beyond scrutiny. And that we should learn to accept criticism of our criticism too, not just criticism of our games. ;P

Although there certainly are people who think like this, there are plenty of religious people who believe their God to be merciful and think that even non-believers will be saved. Saying that to a religious person, not believing means death strikes me as a little bigoted.

Don't worry, Joroen, I get you. You made a very true statement. Dunno why you got the replies you got. But hey, that's the internet for you...

What Movies Will Look Like in 2014

Yeah, I know, this is not exactly what people think about when they talk about "movies", but it is still a movie. This will most likely air on theaters here in Latin-America and I can't wait to see it... Frankly, I'm not much of a movie-goer, but I can make an exception for this one. I'll probably watch others like the new X-men or TMNT movies only when they air on cable in a few years. ;P

TMNT Trailer

I understand that some re-envisioning of the characters is to be expected. After all, who wants to just carbon-copy something old instead of putting its own twist on it? Buy why, oh why did they choose to go that direction? Don't they have better concept artists in Hollywood or something? The turtles look awful with those hulking bodies and tiny heads... Yeah, those live-action koopas are the first thing that comes to mind, and that's not a mental image you want associated with a movie. ;P

What are you thinking about right now?

Don't sweat it, LockeZ. You know the saying: "No man is a prophet in his own land." One day, when we move beyond this work=money=eat paradigm, and robots do all our chores, we'll be able to live only for the games. ;v; ...Until robots rise up, that is. Then we're screwed. =/

Art and You

Don't worry, LockeZ, we'll all die one day. =) Now go take your meds... don't you remember what happened the last time you argued this?

Yeah, this 'rule' has always been there, but I'm glad it's being further enforced (Now, if only you people cared to enforce the no-shitty-blogs rule). But how far are you willing to take this? Are mods going to make sure that permission was actually granted to use all resources? Or is ok to keep lifting stuff from Goggle Images as long as we associate a name to it? =P

Illusions of Loyalty

Cool news! You seem to be making lots of updates lately. Are you planning to do more? I mean, should I wait, or is this a good time to give this game another go? ...Also, would you be interested in some custom artsies? Look at you, you don't even have a logo. =P

Greetings from RMtopia! Review

Haha! Funny story that. I wanted (and still want) to learn to use other programs, like GameMaker, Construct, etc. And is like, if you want to learn how to drive Manual, but someone gifts you an Automatic car, obviously you're not gonna bother to learn anymore. xD So I declined... The only thing I regret is that thus far my only attempts at learning to use those programs can be reduced to me watching a couple of YouTube tutorials and then proceed to rock back and forth in confusion. -_-

But hey, if I really, really need the full version of Ace to make this game, I can always win another contest. ;D

Greetings from RMtopia! Review

Thanks for the review! ...Yeah, the gameplay kinda fell flat on its face, didn't it? xD I've been working on fixing some of the issue you bring up here, like making the skills more 'creative' and stuff. For example, I introduced a skill for the Engineers that gets stronger the more you use it. Also, I corrected a mistake I made regarding the weapons debuff rate because I didn't understand what exactly that option did - In general buffs/debuffs and statuses will play a slightly more prominent role.

I've also changed the way the 'dungeons' work. They're no longer just horizontal paths... You probably figured why I made them that way. xD But I guess a little "exploreishun" can't hurt. So now the dungeons are a small two dimensional areas, and the radar actually works like a radar, beeping as you get close to the dreamboat pieces and other buried treasures.

I was planning on uploading a fixed version this week, but I decided to go an extra mile and fix some details about the story too. As well as amke my own battle animations... I hope I don't regret the latter descicion. xP

The Screenshot Topic Returns

@Xenomic: The difference between Liberty's map and you own, is that you could see most of her map in one single screen; while in yours, if you stand right in the middle of it, you would only see the same thing in all four directions- it would look empty! Even if 24 steps from point A to point B is not much for you, the map as a whole would lack in composition. If you can take a screen from any point of any of your maps and there's nothing of notice in that screen, that's a bad map. So, even if the source material asks you for gigantic halls and whatnot, I'd strongly suggest you to go against that in favor of more aesthetically pleasant areas.

@arandom: Have you considered making the outlines of the trees, ticker, so they look more cartoon-ish and so they stand out more from the ground? Changing the colors of the trees so they're brighter than the ground may work for the same purpose. I know you're trying to copy the RTP but, toying around with the colors a little may actually add some variety to your game... Also, if I could walk to the edges of a map and not be transported to a new area I would feel cheated, so, think about that. =P
