Also, "interesting experience" is actually something most developers are aiming for, and it's not really a bad thing. Believe it or not, all games provide an experience, whether they have pretty atmospheric settings or not. The experience a game gives us is ultimately what we remember down the long road ahead.

Mmh. What I said was not aimed at games or developers. It was aimed at this heightened idea of what an "interesting experience" is. And you have to remember that in this case this "experience" was conditioned to the removal of complementary game elements, such as subtitles for a fictional language. As if their presence alone was enough to erase the effort that went into crafting said language; or the player's ability to appreciate it, and finding it "interesting" or "memorable" in their own terms.

In short, what people expect and get out of games is different. If you wish a game did something you wanted to see, that's Ok. That can be a discussion. But let's not be so hasty about dismissing them entirely if they don't do that. I think there comes a point in which is better to enjoy things for what they're, rather than to hate on them for what they're not.

There's enhancing the atmosphere/themes of a game and there's inconveniencing the player. Map, subtitles, all of that, I'm sure they did it that way to not fall on the latter. That's actually good design. The fastest you can convey and idea, the better. Why having to press a button and see a 'pulling off map' animation everytime, when you can just glance at it at a corner of the screen? Why having to guess what the character are saying and literally having to learn an entire new language as you play, when you can just read it on the screen?

Not to mention that most games allow you to turn off these things. So, if that's how you want to play your games, knock yourself out. But I'm pretty sure most people are not looking for "an interesting experience" they just want play good games in the genres they enjoy.

If wanted "an interesting experience" I'd get lost in the wilderness myself and get eaten by animals for real. xD No thanks.

Edit: I'm not saying that having done it they way you suggest would have been bad; just that neither is this. Both are valid.

@Colt: That looks great. Is that a commercial game? It looks like it could be... Anyway, here are some things caught my eye. When characters are strafing the walking animation is too subtle. The movement of their legs is barely noticeable and their bodies remain stiff. The result looks a bit odd, almost as if the characters are hoovering around. Yet when they're running, they throw their bodies to the front and their leg's movement is more pronounced. Maybe find a middle ground between these animations?

In the stealth part; with sprites that big, getting so close to the enemies, in areas so wide open, you kinda expect the character to be seen. If the character was aided by shadows or had some kind of "optical camo" like in mgs, it would be easier to suspend disbelief there. I mean, it's not bad, many games do it like that. But if you can address that somehow, that would be great.

Also, in the video it seems like you cannot shoot the bad guys, nor they can shoot you, from above tables and stuff. That's odd.

@Chilly-Pheese-Steak: (That's quite the nickname xD) So, I take it that you're working with rm2k/3, right? Are you still dependent to any of the default menu systems? Because it seems like you're trying to imitate that style. However if you can event your own, I think someone with your talent can strive for something less dull and boxy. You game has certain charm to it and I think you could benefit from the extra effort... Unless what you're showing us is still a WIP, in which case, disregard. (Love the animations btw)

OMG! They did it! They took out Carl's eye! I never thought they would have the guts (Heh;) to do that on TV, considering they never cut off Rick's hand; but they did it. I wonder if they're going to let him have a gruesome scar like in the comics, though. Or if they're going to put some fancy eye-patch on him, so he can still be the pretty teenage boy of the show...

Also, I wonder if they're going to keep Jesus, or if they're going to name him something else for the easily offended.

@Dookie: Whoa! That looks awesome. I get what you say about the lighting effects overlays. It's more of a convenience thing. But if you're putting this amount of work into "painting" every map already, it really pays off going the extra mile. Good job!

@Versalia: Animated battle backgrounds are always a plus. But the maps seems a bit bare. Are you still going to add more details to it? If not, making the enemies bigger may also help with that... Besides that, it looks fine. Perhaps the glow from the lights is too visible? If it was dark I would understand their radius to be that wide, but since it's not, it looks odd.

@Punkitt: Following up on Versalia's observation. Maybe make the "sweat" blue? Unless that animation and that background are not exclusive to the Bee enemy, in which case it stands to reason that unfortunate combinations are bound to happen. Other than that, I really like the style of your battles. Are you making an Earthbound fan game perhaps?

Btw, doesn't TWD comes back on the 14th? What a perfect setting for a romantic evening, Steam sales and Zombie drama. xD

Race and Gender in Games

Yeah, the language in those articles leaves something to be desired. All three of them. Which is really at the core of this issue. This is not so much about "marginalized people" or the "X or Y experience". This has more to do with the political inclinations of certain people. And guess what? Not everybody shares your politics! So of course things are bound to get feisty.

Btw, I see this a lot. No matter how careful you try to be with your words, or how nuanced your arguments, the discussion always devolves into: "So what's your problem with criticism, uh? UHH???" Well, none. It's the shaming; the judging; that is the problem. And we can tell the difference. Quit trying to conflate the two to justify your own behavior or that of others...

"I noticed you don't have any marginalized people in your game, and I think it would greatly improve the quality of the game if you represented minorities better."

Mmh. I'm not so sure. Maybe it would "broaden the appeal" of the game; not its quality. The implications are very different.

Just sayin' =P

@Luchino: The first screen look great. But why is the tall grass so vibrant when every other color is not? It doesn't look bad per se, but it stands out a bit too much. ...Overall your textures are a tad busy. And sometimes the lines are too pronounced, giving things a cartoony look; like those columns in the third screen. Try to be more subtle with that kind of details.

@Erave: Sick pixels, man. Nuff said. And I love the colors too. It's nice to see a palette the favors more cold colors for a change.

I am a grown man of 27. Those who know me know are quick to tell me my emotional range is stuck in between rage and disdain, I have trouble grieving when even family members die, yet the ending to Persona 4 made me cry like a bitch.

Really? I just watched that on YT and it's just the word "senpai" for over 20 minutes... Some of the dialogue was Ok though.

Man, I just got the insanest idea today at work that will totally revolutionized the way RPGs play.

I understand your concern, but I don't think anyone is really going to steal your idea and much less sue you for it. xD As a general rule, people who steal ideas can't make shit of their own; That's why they steal ideas... At most there will be drama. And I don't blame you if you want to spare yourself that. But I think the benefits outweigh the risks. See LockeZ's post.
