So, by that definition, new IPs with overly sexualized characters isn't fanservice. It's exploitation. Gotta have fans to serve first, after all.

Ehhh, I'm pretty sure you can still be a fan of the trope itself, or "genre" if you can call it that. Or be a fan of the developers if you're familiar with the recurring ideas in their work. And I think the Xeno developers are known for this? I remember people kicking a fuss back in the day over optional bathing suits for the Xenosaga characters, or KOS-MOS' miniskirt + garter-belt design.

Personally I'm Ok with that. I even favor it. You need "Public Bath/Shower scenes" levels of creepiness to start bothering me. xD

Now, now, let's tone down the hate on Mario is Missing. While I certainly wouldn't call it a "Mario game", it's an alright game. I have fond memories of it. The prospect of traveling around the world was a very neat one for me back then. That's one of the reasons why I got into Terranigma as well, and rpgs in general... Feel free to rag on Mario's Time Machine, though. =P

lol, some people... You know, I'd be willing to give this guy a pass regarding the character graphics, because I think he has changed them enough to be considered "his". It's evident he likes the style. Had he made them from scratch they would have ended looking pretty much the same way they do now, considering his spriting skills... But the world graphics are so blatantly ripped. He just changed things like size, color and direction. There should not be a price tag in that game, even if it is just one dollar.

btw, how come a game like that has so many comments/reviews? Is Steam a good place to get feedback on amateur games?

To say that this is just companies taking advantage of the political climate in order to boost their sales is a bit silly. I mean, yes, there's some of that, no doubt about it. But if companies where all like: "Halp! Come save us from them, nasty SJWs!" and people looked around and saw no "SJWs" nowhere, they would be promptly ignored. And they would remember that the next time a company cried "SJW".

However, the reality is that those people (The "SJWs") are not just merely indifferent towards this kind of games. They routinely go out of their way to attack (not analyze, not discuss), anything or anyone that does not conform to their world views... In this particular case a saw a tweet by someone being all like: "I know several people in the industry who will no longer do business with you" or something among those lines. I mean, sure, it's not "CENSORSHIP!!!" But you're using whatever influence you have to make it more difficult for those who may be interested in this kind of game, to get it on this side of the pond... Why? What do you have to gain from it? Absolutely nothing.

Therefore, even if people can understand that companies have something to gain from the outrage as well, this is seen as the lesser of two evils... So anyway. If you want to assign blame, at least do so a bit more evenly? There's enough to go around. Sadly.
