Does anyone still play DotA?

author=Natook
Even then you shouldn't stay in one lane for too long; gotta mix it up a lot. I think I stay in one lane until about level 6 and then I'm all over the place.

Certain heroes benefit from being in one lane, some benefit from roaming.

For example, in Heroes of Newerth, Sand Wraith (Spectre in DotA) is a hard carry (hard to beat late game) but requires farm (lots of money.) He is best placed in the short lane (Top for Hellbourne, bottom for Legion) and left to last-hit and deny for a huge level advantage and money advantage. This can be done solo or with a partner, but regardless, he should never leave that lane unless its to kill a hero with his ultimate, or win the game. Literally.

Then there are heroes like Magmus (Sand King in DotA) or Pebbles (Tiny in DotA) who do exceptionally well as a solo-mid hero. The reason for them to solo mid is so that they can get a quick farm and level advantage over the side lanes. As soon as they hit level 6, they should be going between lanes, and using their abilities (Avalanche/Throw combo with Pebbles, Ultimate+Portal Key/Stun combo with Magmus) to kill heroes. Because they have on average a two-level advantage, the heroes they are killing are often able to be one-shot with these combos, and will suffer greatly because the ganker (Magmus/Pebbles) will get lots of EXP and Money from the kill, which they use to hold an advantage, and the heroes that die stay at a disadvantage. Done often enough to the same 1-2 heroes, you can effectively reduce the game to a 5v4/3.

Most heroes are capable of Soloing mid, but some benefit from it so much more than others it is sickening.

That being said, holb. I thought the Introduction forums was "for your first post, or encouraging newbies to post lots." Not... well. Whatever this kind of post really is. Sounds like a bunch of QQ to me but whatever people want to take from it. It doesn't encourage new people to post lots, thats for sure. In fact, a newbie coming into the Introduction forums and seeing threads like these would likely think the opposite. Posts like these are better left for PMs to the people who might actually care, or not at all.

Radnen- I think you should choose a slightly different base color for the leaves of the trees, they are not contrasting enough with the grass. A minor nitpick I have is that trees in real life don't tend to grow out of grass. There is usually a bare patch of dirt that circulates around the base of the tree (trees are HUGE nutrient hoggers), but it's minor, as I've seen many styles pull it off.

That isn't the reason that grass doesn't grow as well around trees x_x That is a huge misconception. In the case of Evergreens (pines, cedars, etc.) the reason is because the tree secretes a sap that is acidic, which lowers the pH of the soil to an acidity that isn't supportive to grow grass. The needles also decompose into the same acidic sap that taints the soil.

In the case of Deciduous trees, it is most often a result of shade. However it is fairly common to see grass growing under a deciduous tree in nature. When landscaping, these trees are often given a bed of raised/isolated soil, or mulch, to keep the grass away from the tree since it is harder to maintain (water/cut) and looks better when its non-existent as opposed to thin and weak turf.

@Radnen: It looks alright but the perspective on the trunk of the evergreen trees is wrong. It looks face-foward when it should be closer to top-down (although eagle-eye would likely suffice)

Your memories of the early days of the internet

I remember playing Warcraft II online, using a DOS based IRC client to find people to play with (writing down IP addresses and such) and a lot of DOS based graphical MUDs using heavy ASCII art.

[RMVX] Birds flying across a screen.

ignoring my post ;_;

[RMVX] Birds flying across a screen.

I imagine using a picture would be easier, that way you can have it fly off screen.

Just create a few picture images, for each step of animation. Lets call them Bird1, Bird2, Bird3, Bird4.

create an event that initializes all the birds:

Variable [0001: Animation Frames] = 0

Variable [0002: First Bird X] = whatever
Variable [0003: First Bird Y] = whatever
Variable [0004: Second Bird X] = whatever
Variable [0005: Second Bird Y] = whatever
Variable [0006: First Bird Frame] = 1
Variable [0007: Second Bird Frame] = 3
Show Picture 1: Bird1 @ X:Variable 0001, Y:Variable 0002
Show Picture 2: Bird3 @ X:Variable 0003, Y:Variable 0004
Set Self Switch A: True

on page 2, have a logic event that controls them:

0001 += 1

0002 -= 2
0003 -= 1
0004 += 5
0005 += 2

Move Picture 1: X:0002, Y:0003 @ 5 Frames
Move Picture 2: X:0003, Y:0004 @ 5 Frames

Wait 5 Frames

If 0001 >= 4
If 0006 == 1
0006 = 2
Show Picture 1: Bird2, X:0002, Y:0003
else
if 0006 == 2
0006 = 3
Show Picture 1: Bird3, X:0002, Y:0003
else
if 0006 == 3
0006 = 4
Show Picture 1: Bird4, X:0002, Y:0003
else
if 0006 == 4
0006 = 1
Show Picture 1: Bird1, X:0002, Y:0003
end
end
end
end
[..Same logic as above for Picture 2..]
end

And then just make sure there is some logic at the end that moves them back to their starting position when they pass the edge of the screen a certain amount.

(obviously you'll need to tweak numbers and crap as I am just writing this here and making numbers up as I go)

Graphic Novels or Mangas?

Graphic Novels are literally novels, but with the descriptive text removed and replaced with Comic-styled panel-by-panel art, and the dialog implanted in comic-style dialog bubbles.

Manga are more like Comics, but are done in a specific style (thick, lots of pages vs. a few big pages, often only peppered with colored pages) whereas american style comics are big pages, full color, and often quite short.

Yeah, the original version was perfect for the place that it occupies in the story/world/etc. Prexus' colors look nice, as well as Rei-'s and many others, but they aren't suited to the area itself.

Calunio, you make a good point about how obsessing is a major reason that nothing gets done. I'm finish with that chip now anyways, and I've moved on to making other stuff. But, once again, thanks a lot for all the suggestions, guys.

EDIT: @Prexus: I realize that I'm not limited by palette, I know that very well. I could have made the trees golden and pink if I really felt like it. Like I said, I want a more realistic look - not in terms of photorealistic tiles, but in terms of the fact that you do not see blue trees and grass in broad daylight, at least not to my knowledge. I want it to be serious in the vein that it wouldn't be set in some rainbow candyland like a more off the wall game.

Fyi there are hundreds of species of blue trees, and several varieties of blue grass (I am a landscaper/turf management specialist) but if you are going for realistic then whatever. I just assumed by the style that you were going for a more cartoony look considering.

That being said, I like Rei's result as well, although it falls into the blah "Brown and Green" style of graphic that most modern games are going for these days (which is probably what you are looking for)

^ Saturn Valley?

Rei: My point in making the grass blue was that cool colors actually detract your eye from them, putting the untextured blue grass in the background and bringing the trees forward for the eye to see. However, it would look best as a night-time or cool area setting.

Your point is valid, but the original is by no means the best rendition. Having the trees and grass the exact same shade of green is poor use of color. He isn't limited by palette, and shouldn't be spriting as if he is.

Er, what? You are trying for a realistic look?

You do realize that your tiles could easily be likened to Earthbound, possibly one of the most out-there, beyond realistic, and bizarre games.

The darker blue trees (second blue edit) were the best thus far.

edit: That being said, using the original trees but making the grass bluer would work as well (possibly even better than the trees being blue)

edit 2: Like this!
