Games you hate or dislike?
Blasphemy!! How can you not like Chrono Trigger?? It's like, PERFECTION!, made into a videogame... Seriously, though, other than perhaps the light-hearted tone of the game, I don't see how can anyone dislike Chrono Trigger (Aside from the usual: "It's too hyped" nay-sayers).
Me? I don't know. I guess games without rpg mechanics. Games that are very straight-forward, like Beat-em ups for example: "Punch everything that shows on the screen!". If they allow you to upgrade your character and stuff, then I find them enjoyable. But if not, unless I'm playing with friends, I don't go near them. Also, I don't require like a super complex story, but some plot is always nice.
When it comes to rpgs I can be very picky as well, because of the time investment they require. But I would say, games where you have to chose to either talk/look/search/or whatever, instead of having a single Action button. Or games whit tons of in battle messages: "Hero attacks monster party" "Slime A takes X damage" "Slime B takes X damage" Slime C takes X damage" etc. make it the most difficult for me to get into them. This is the reason why I keep putting off series like Dragon Quest of Shin Megami Tensei, which I keep hearing are very good, but I just can't muster the patience to go through that anymore. And even newer games keep doing this, for some reason. Weird.

What are you thinking about right now?
I feel like "expressing a desire to see change" and calling "bullshit" on something, are very different things. There's a myriad of ways in which we could call "bullshit" on Zelda games, so why stop at gender? Why is Link white? Why are the games so Euro-centric, blah, blah, blah. (And how many of these things also apply to anyone's games here? Can we call bullshit on those too?) I don't know, that just doesn't seem fair, or productive... Wanting to see change is fine. Who doesn't want to see change somewhere? But we ought to remember that not everybody is nearly as invested about those changes as we are. And there's nothing wrong with that.
Ftr, I'm not against a playable Zelda, or even a female Link. Just that some of the ideas expressed here are not the way to go about it.

What are you thinking about right now?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Link and Zelda the reincarnations of the Hero of legend (or something like that), and a Goddess? I mean, it makes sense for them to be reincarnated into their same gender each time (At least as much sense as the alternative). You could say that's too conventional maybe, but "bullshit"? If that's the creative vision of the developers, it oughts to be respected, I think... People are way too vocal about this stuff nowadays. And they have every right to voice their concerns, of course. But at the same time they should understand that nobody owes them games/shows/whatever. =|

I'm thinking: How the hell do you go from "Tatsu Maki Senpuu Kyaku" to "Hapek pek duket" or whatever.... I guess we'll never know.

Aaah, now I get it. Well, I guess the obvious go-to examples, would be types of 'games' that already -sort of- have appropriate names, like visual novels or simulators. The issue is that it's still difficult to agree where to draw the line exactly, because there's somewhat of an overlap... In the case of visual novels, I believe the term should be strictly used for "games" that only allow you to "flip the page" so to speak. A "visual novel" that allows you to do more than that -should- already be considered a game... even if marginally so.
The amount of interactivity, or why not? a "win-state", among others, sound like reasonable enough criteria to be drawing these lines.
Edit: The same way making the first distinction helps us? Labeling them "not games" and learning from them is not mutually exclusive.

Well, I mean what I mean. I already gave a couple of examples, and I could give a few more. For example the difference between a soap opera, or a documentary, or a movie, or a porn flick, etc. I believe all these things have names for a reason, despite belonging to the same medium... But I don't know. I could be wrong. I'm not entirely sure if I understand the definition of "medium" to begin with. xD Sometimes I still struggle not to mistake "medium" with "genre" for example.
As for people who do act as gate-keepers. Well, those people will always exist, that can't be helped. And you shouldn't let that get in the way of anything else... I would say that they're a tiny minority of people, however. At first it may look like they're a lot more. But in my own experience, I've been able to come to an agreement with many people who at first appeared to be inflexible in their beliefs. At the end of the day it all does boil down to a different interpretation of words. *shrug*

Not to completely derail this thread, I would like to suggest one of my games to be featured next. xD But then I remember all of my games exist only on my head. =(

I've never played this "Legendary Legend" game, so I can't attest to how good or bad it does what it does. And I'm probably taking this discussion way out of context regardless, but... I feel many people have a problem telling apart the "medium" from the "games". I agree that if you're making a game, you need to focus on gameplay. Not that the other stuff doesn't matter. Or that the lack of gameplay invalidates the rest. But simply that it would be inaccurate to call a "game" something that it's not a game. In the same fashion that you wouldn't call a poem a novel, or a pamphlet a book, even though they're essentially the same medium.
The interactive medium is still in its infancy and "games" its all we've known so far, so it's an easy mistake to make. But over time we'll have to start taking this into consideration. We'll have to start calling things by appropriate names. Not to pretend to act as gate-keepers for the entire medium or anything* but to avoid misunderstandings, if nothing else.
*Except for those pretentious walking simulators done by hipsters: "Press right to reflect on your mortality". Pfft! Keep those out. I don't care. xD j/k FREEZE PEACH!!!

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?
I've been playing a whole lot of DBZ games lately, due to the nostalgia caused by the new movies and the announcement of the new series. And man, am I disappointed... Probably my favorite game of all is "Legend of the Super Saiyan" for the SNES. But sadly, that one goes up to the Frieza Saga only. There are some other games that were pretty similar to that one on the NES but those only go as far as the Androids or Cell sagas (I'm not sure. I haven't' actually played them).
A series of games that covers all the sagas is the "Legacy of Goku/Buu's fury" games on the GBA, but I don't know who thought it was a good idea to make a DBZ game play like a clumsy action rpg where you walk around killing forest animals. Man, what a waste of potential... "Legendary Super Warriors" for the GBC does slightly better. But I felt it skipped several key battles and plot elements. Plus I found the whole unlocking of characters/cards a bit too tedious.
Then there's the plethora of fighting games. "Super Butoden 2" for the SNES did a decent take on the Cell Saga, but the other two games on the series were straight up fighting games. "Super Sonic Warriors" on the GBA is cool game as well but it also does poorly with the story... And there's one japanese game called "DBZ Legends" that I hope someone translates one day because it looks like it's the perfect mix between an accurate take on the story and fast-paced battles.
Most recent games like the "Tenkaichi Budokai" series attempt to do just that. But the thing is that what one game does well the other drops the ball in and vice versa. I guess they know that if they make the perfect DBZ game they would have no reason to keep churning game after game after game, and have morons like me playing them all. -_-

Ok, to step back from my snarky position for a while and reply in kind with a brief and honest answer: Of course, media can influence people. That's one hell of a vague statement, though, but one I can still agree with. When you change "influence" to "harm", however, you're framing the discussion in a very specific way. And that's where I start having an issue with it. The only logical conclusion of something being deemed "harmful" is to try and get rid of it to some degree or fashion. But because that intrinsic value that all forms of art/speech have, I think our focus as artists should be to "build up" not to "tear down"... But that's just me and my centr-ist opinion. xD

I haven't been around much lately, and I'm not about to read another several-pages-long thread, specially if it is as bad as the other one. But I'm just bummed out that a remake of FF6 (or even FF5) didn't came before FF7. I feel cheated. =(
