FLYINGJESTER'S PROFILE
I am the Jester.
I make games using JavaScript, C, C++, Mercury, Java, Assembly (amd64 and UltraSparc) and Python. I used to use Sphere a lot, but I'm more into C/C++ and Mercury nowadays. I still use JavaScript and embed it sometimes, and I usually use Python for build systems and system management.
I wrote TurboSphere, which is a recreation of the Sphere Game Engine with a number of major improvements. I'm not really working on it anymore.
I'm surely going to finish making a game someday. I mean, sooner or later, it's bound to happen. Right?

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?
I just played Plumbers Don't Wear Ties! Don't play it, it's bad.
I was planning on LPing it...but Fraps doesn't like FreeDO, and I didn't realize until I had already finished it.

Monsters, stats, damage and balance. A game of numbers.
I increase damage for higher ATK and DEF values to offset increased HP at higher levels. In my formula, the lowest possible values for ATK or DEF are 5, and the highest possible are 255. All characters and enemies are treated identically, except for a couple scripted battles.
Really, you need to experiment to see what damage formulas you like. I used an online graphing calculator to find them out, graphing to see what, say, two equal players would do, at high and low level, and what a high level player would do to a low level defender, and vice versa. That also helped me decide the HP range and growth per level.

I'm glad you want to talk in an engine agnostic way. That's about the only time I'll get to share anything meaningful.
You wanna know the formula I've used for years, in two RTS games, a final-fantasy style game, and in a fire emblem style game?
Damage = Math.sqrt(ATK)+(ATK/DEF)
I've always been most concerned with the interactions of different level/strength units.
And if you made it in assembly, I would pay to see that show.

The Business Aspect of Starting a Game Studio
You could try and get a job with an established game studio. That is both a 'real' job and doing what you want (hopefully). Many, many successful game companies were founded by folks who got their start in other game companies, often with like-minded people they met there. It would probably also help to teach you about the nature of the work, without having all the risk of doing it yourself, at least not right away.

Of course you will be able to! Maybe Flash plugins won't be standard equipment with browsers, but there will certainly be flash plugins available. But I'm betting that they will standard issue for quite some time. Years. And years, probably. I'd wager Flash will outlive IPv4.
Plus, HTML5 isn't even fully supported by any browser except for in developer previews of RIM's blackberry browser. IE9 hates it like the plague, and Chrome has a lot more silent failures than people think. Maybe FF does HTML5 well, I haven't really checked, although it still has many more obvious explosions on the HTML5 player at youtube than chrome does for me.
Well, if somehow Flash does give up the ghost, just remember: It still works very well in Netscape.

@Mary 4D: Yes, of course it does! I use it more than half the time. If you have a G3 Macintosh, it's the best you can get along with iCab. IE for Mac must make Steve Jobs spin in his grave, and FireFox jumped ship on G3s a long long time ago. To the point that it's a living hell trying to even get the PPC binaries! I simply can't find them, and the source for it needs OSX 10.4 which I don't have (OSX 10.3.9 all the way!). So my choices are Netscape or iCab. Both crash on a lot of modern pages, but there is relatively little that crashes both it seems.
And upgrading to an Intel Mac or Windows box is a dumb idea. There is a certain romance to having a non ARM or x86 processor. I wouldn't give it up for all the cores in a Phenom II. Not that I don't have a Phenom II desktop, but I like using PPC Macs whenever possible.

And here I was picturing a wild cat. Silly me.
For some reason I picked up Daikatana, and did the unthinkable. I actually put the cartridge into my 64, picked up a controller, and then pushed the switch on. I must hate myself or something.
