FLYINGJESTER'S PROFILE
I am the Jester.
I make games using JavaScript, C, C++, Mercury, Java, Assembly (amd64 and UltraSparc) and Python. I used to use Sphere a lot, but I'm more into C/C++ and Mercury nowadays. I still use JavaScript and embed it sometimes, and I usually use Python for build systems and system management.
I wrote TurboSphere, which is a recreation of the Sphere Game Engine with a number of major improvements. I'm not really working on it anymore.
I'm surely going to finish making a game someday. I mean, sooner or later, it's bound to happen. Right?

Unity3D - 3D engine using JavaScript or C#. I could go on for days about Unity, but the quick-and-dirty: it's free, it works on every major OS (inc. Linux), the games can play in a web browser
Linux support is pretty spotty with Unity. The engine won't run at all with some video cards (like my laptop's) where it will under Windows, and the web player doesn't work at all under Linux.
A lot of professional engines are written in C++, and the engine is developed or branched to support a specific game, but it is also scripted in some language as well (Lua is pretty popular for that).
Wireless controllers
And that the MotionInJoy driver is really sketchy. It smells like some kind of ware I wouldn't want on my computer.
[Poll] Status effect against bosses
Having a death spell isn't a bad design decision. The fact that there comes a time when every enemy except bosses can be killed in one shot is worse design, I think.
I don't see any problem with having a couple spells or abilities that are made just to fight mobs doesn't seem very bad to me, either.

McAfee set to expire in a week.. Good free alternatives?

Is it as good as Norton ? I am planning to buy Norton 2013, which costs about $50. :P
I have had horrible problems with Norton's licence manager claiming my copy's subscription had run out.
Seriously, I doubt that MSE is on par with a lot of commercial anti virus programs. But, if you actually practice safe computing, you should be fine with it. You should also be OK with Avast or AVG, too. And if you are extremely diligent in never loggin in as the admin directly, updating your software, choosing safer browsers and web accessing programs, etc., you actually will probably be OK with nothing at all.

AVG is free.
I can say, from several security incidents at my job at the government, though, that MacAfee, AVG, Norton, and Grisoft antivirus (and these were commercial versions) are pretty much identical, and in most cases they don't catch quite a lot of problems. These days, I usually advocate just using a computer smarter and not bothering with AV, which is pretty much entirely resource intensive and fairly ineffective.

Software accelerated?
Sometimes software that is old is actually extremely efficient, and very fast. Correspondingly, sometimes brand new software is very slow and cumbersome.

Yes. Scripting isn't 'unnecessary work'. It's learning how to actually make a game. Or even more generally, how to actually tell a computer to do things. If you want to make a game, don't fear scripting.
Gaming developing and where to begin.
I for one sometimes like that people here really worry about graphics, sometimes more than anything else. I come from a land where you have to build everything from scratch. That means that at least some of us (me included) look much, much more closely at mechanics and coding than anything else. Graphics, Story, Sound, those take a huge back seat (I often forget to think about sound at all, until my game is nearly done).
But here, with RPGMaker, I see some amazing things from people, things I would never have tried, because I only worry about codez and not graphicz. There's something to be said for that.

Sphere's site will be back. Even if I have to have write my own forum software and run it off my desktop, there will be a place that Sphere can call home.
I agree with nightowl. If you want to really impress people, you should use an engine that gives you tremendous control. And often at least some of the wow-factor is because they haven't used the engine much if at all, and so are impressed by the more unique things that it lets you do.
