FLYINGJESTER'S PROFILE

I am the Jester.

I make games using JavaScript, C, C++, Mercury, Java, Assembly (amd64 and UltraSparc) and Python. I used to use Sphere a lot, but I'm more into C/C++ and Mercury nowadays. I still use JavaScript and embed it sometimes, and I usually use Python for build systems and system management.

I wrote TurboSphere, which is a recreation of the Sphere Game Engine with a number of major improvements. I'm not really working on it anymore.

I'm surely going to finish making a game someday. I mean, sooner or later, it's bound to happen. Right?

RPG Maker 2003's Random Number Generator

If you roll a dice, it will come up the same 4 times in a row. It will come up the same ten times in a row, eventually.

How big is your sampling? More importantly, how many iterations before you get another run of 4? You need to know the period of such occurrences before you can draw any conclusions.

A shame! It has the best mapping of any RPG Maker program (three layers and unlimited tiles per tileset)

There are, of course, free and open source engines out there that support 2^32 layers and 2^32 tiles per tileset.

RPG Maker 2003's Random Number Generator

Random != Balanced.

A good RNG will on occasion turn up the same number multiple times.

Can anyone recommend a good open source or free video editor? Thanks in advance!

Having a good mic makes a lot of difference, too. Even a cheap 3.5 mm microphone is vastly superior to laptop mics.

I usually end up editing my voice-overs in Audacity to make them sound more like I did when I had my terrible mic mic that had character, but now with much less background noise.

To be fair, I don't use Avidemux that much anymore--but it's still a good editor.

I usually use NCH VideoPad nowadays. NCH is sort of free (some strange 'student' and 'express' editions that appear and disapear on their website from time to time).

It has rather good features and excellent configurability. The flip-side of the NCH video editor is that it works more slowly when converting and rendering (no threading at all, Avidemux kicks its butt here), and it requires all video files be converted to MPEG (which it does automatically without lowering quality). Which isn't too bad, just caveat emptor, since you will want to either delete the new converted MPEG or the original when you are done.

Parallax is scaled scrolling of certain layers. It adds false perspective.

Avidemux is pretty nice. It's more usedul for arrangement and syncing than effects, though.

What are you thinking about right now?

Has anyone ever made a Smurf noir?

"This above all; to thine own game be true." ~William Shakespeare

"You want to deliver vast amounts of content through the game. And again, a game is not something that you just dump something on. It's not a big truck. It's a series of tubes. And if you don't understand, those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your content in, it gets in line and it's going to be delayed by anything else in that tube."

Games are a series of tubes. You have to consider how much content you want to put down you game-tube. Because otherwise you will clog your game-tube, and need to get the game-plunger before your content overflows all over onto the floor. Okay, maybe I'm thinking it's more like a toilet...
