Description

What're We Cooking?

A full game cooked up in two weeks (and a weekend)! The cookoff begins on February 1st and wraps up on February 17th where all games must be submitted before the end of the day. Check the event page (and your account's timezone) to see when the event ends in your local time.

The Kitchen Suite

The tool of choice is RPG Maker VX Ace Lite! It is the free but feature limited version of RPG Maker VX Ace. The restrictions of Ace Lite are as follows:

Maximum Database Entries
  • 10 Actors
  • 10 Classes
  • 126 Skills
  • 16 Items
  • 60 Weapons
  • 60 Armors
  • 30 Enemies
  • 30 Troops
  • 25 States
  • 110 Animations
  • 4 Tilesets
  • 10 Common events
  • 100 Switches
  • 100 Variables
  • There are no other database restrictions

Map & Event Limitations
  • 20 Maps
  • 10 Events per map
  • Call Common Event is disabled

Script Limitations
  • The script editor is disabled.
  • The 'Script' event command is disabled. Other script commands in Assign Variable, Condition Branch, and Move Event are still enabled.

These are strictly implementation restrictions that you are free to work around. Need more than sixteen items? Make your key items weapons nobody can equip! Want more than ten playable characters? Perhaps when one leaves the party you could overwrite its name and stats with your new character! Twenty five troops too limiting? Make a troop that adds random enemies via battle events!

Please note: While it is possible to add your own scripts to a game through devious means the spirit of the Ace Lite restriction rules in this contest. Injecting scripts is not allowed beyond using the enabled script calls for their intended purposes. Of course changing the database caps through other means is also right out. Any game found violating these restrictions will be disqualified.

You can download RPG Maker VX Ace Lite here.

If you want to see what you can do under such restrictions Deckiller has made a game in Ace Lite called Kolmesarta. Feel free to check it out!

Your Ingredients!

Everything in the kitchen is allowed! There is no theme to the cook off besides obeying the restrictions of Ace Lite. There are no resource limitations for this contest as Ace Lite does not restrict what you can import into your game. Whip out the spice rack! Prepare the vegetables! Go hog wild! It's a free for all!

Nobody wants a half baked morsel though. The only requirement beyond using RPG Maker VX Ace Lite is that the game must be complete. Only finished games are wanted here!

For the Tastiest of Them All

We've got four judges reuniting to sample the delicacies of all participants: The RTP Princess Liberty, The Amazing Artist Nessiah, the Makerscore Master Deckiller, and the Ludicrously Lazy GreatRedSpirit! Their number one game will received a boxed copy of RPG Maker VX Ace generously donated by Liberty! The lead developer of the winning game will be contacted by Liberty to make shipping arrangements.

That isn't the only prize though! After submissions are closed there will also be a two week voting phase for all members of RMN to vote for their favorite game! Voting will be open from February 18th to March 11th. The winner will receive their choice of any item excluding RPG Maker VX Ace from the RPGMakerWeb.com store courtesy of RPGMakerWeb!

There is always the achievement badge for participating too! One of a kind will not be made available again! Submit to that completionist tingle and take part!

  • Use a script in the Control Variables window to set the player's location to variables.

This sets a value to a variable so it is allowed! Plus this can be done without scripts anyways.

author=Zalerinian
  • Use scripts in the Move Route to alter whether or not the player can dash (holding shift), and their base speed(I know that you can change this, as I've done it ;) )

Changing how the player controls isn't moving an event so it isn't allowed via scripts. You can set it to a per-map basis though by changing the setting on the map iirc.

author=Zalerinian
  • Use a door's move route (where it changes the graphics) to also run a script that will 1. Enable showing the map name and 2. Change what the name is if you move between the same map, but different spots

This also isn't allowed as it has nothing to do with moving events. You can turn on/off the map display though an event command but without scripts the map name is static though. You can replicate it with a show picture and some event work at least though if it is worth the effort + event.

And unrelated to scripts:
  • As long as I don't use more than 10 events, I can do anything with them, yes? Main point being is there a limit to the number of event pages? (oh no, my secret idea on making amazing levels is out!)

Event pages are not restricted in Lite at all and therefore you can go all in with these!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Second dungeon balancing almost done!

Monsters are all ok, they're hard as heck if you're not paying attention, but you recover pretty easily between fights, and there are lots of options for dealing with them.

Now for the boss...........So far so good, I guess. Damage taken is a little high, but it's still pretty good. Just need to adjust enemy HP a bit, make revive items heal a lot more on revival (seriously, almost every time I revive someone, they die that same turn. That's not cool, bro), and I should be-

....Huh. My "casts tons of support spells" minion seems to ONLY target one particular enemy...That's not good. .......How do I adjust tha-...Eh, screw it. It now buffs EVERYONE on the enemy team. >: D Let's see what that's like!

EDIT: Eh, screw it. The buffs are too strong to apply to everyone. Extra actions and attacks on the bruiser of the team? Not fair.

why would i heal when i could equip a morningstar

by default enemies only target the ally with the last id in the troop (so if you auto-sort, the one on the far right). hooray

Oh my god, you can't call common events and just notice that.... I'm going to have a huuuuuuuuge amount text

Edit: Wait, I found the solution.
*after a dozen small tweaks, start trying to beat the boss for real*

*6 attempts later*

Ohohoho that's what I'm talkin' about! >:D

BRB, buying more potions and revive items and maybe getting one more level

EDIT: ...Very tricky this boss is...It's all about that tipping point. If you can make it happen, and you can maintain that momentum, you win...If you can't make it happen...you're probably screwed.

Heh, so much for "defense is the best offense" :P

...I don't think I am going to make it in time... :<
*stumbles back in, mentally exhausted*

Oh gosh...I had to make so many tiny fixes to that boss. FINALLY, it's possible to beat that mother*censored* at level 6.

Finally. Now on to the last dungeon, the final boss, and then If I have time, the freakin npcs and towns. @_@
Level... 6? Why not agument the ammount of EXP given by enemy and diminish the exp curve / weaken the lvs? =D
Okay I'll stop. ><

Me either. Damn responsibility & societal obligations!
Making the final dungeon right now. Probably going to do some serious bugfixing too.

Overall, it'll be rather linear.

I added spiders and Tim Tams for extra Australian authenticity. Needs moar spiders to make it more challenging, and uhh.. maybe a map with an end rather than just that little island. But I am getting there. There must also be giant deadly tree boss monsters.
I started balancing battles. I'm not very good at that, but hopefully it'll be ok.

A tip I'd like to share with everybody else: in doubt, go for easier. There's a line between challenging and frustratingly difficult. And remember games always tend to be easier (much easier) for those who made them.

Because the battle system is more based around figuring out how to use your abilities to prevent the most damage while causing the most damage. Levels are only a secondary thing. And due to the nature of the skill system, everyone has 100 max MP fixed. So levels aren't as important as usual.

That said, after all the trouble I had last night, I think I'm gonna boost the exp of the second dungeon enemies. level 6 is a nice baseline, but I don't want people to get frustrated and spend an hour grinding just for another 2 levels.

responsibility? Who needs responsibility! Stuff like this doesn't happen every day!

And besides, as someone who wants to go into writing for games if possible, this contest could provide something for future use. :P

Yup. Me too. Intro, small town/world, dungeon. Repeat for 3 dungeons then do finale.

Yeah, I'm gonna make a few tiny tweaks to make the game a little bit easier. My normal enemies are perfect (slightly hard, but once you know how to deal with them, not so bad), but my second boss is a BIT too much...Gonna increase EXP rewards and maybe change one or two of the debuff skills it has so it's not so nasty.

EDIT: Wound up getting towns mostly working last night. My bro was taking forever to shower, and I didn't want to do more balancing after that boss tweaking...X_X

In fact, after the 17th page, you get a graphic glitch, which will render the event window nearly empty. :p

Move another window in front of it to restore the missing parts.
Of course, it won't affect the content of the window. So, don't scream of horror while witnessing your 17 events suddently all emptied.
OMFG... COMPUTER DIED!!!
My CPU Got fried yesterday when I was trying to post here... Power surge or something...

Got the repair guy in today and it is totally gone... no saving it!!!
I will be desperately searching for an external hard drive hub tomorrow morning...

My game is running about 2.5 hours long so far, with plans for about 5 when all the pieces are put together (maps done but not linked in, for example). That being said, in my 2.5 hours I know where all the goodies and such are hidden...

Wish me luck please... I will need it to finish in time :'(
Also, are we going to get to see the entries of others, or winning entries, after the contest closes?

I would LOVE to get a peek at what others have produced other than the screen grabs and tidbits here :)
Dang, I'm redoing all my tiles and that is my goal for today. Finish the battle system tomorrow and submit shortly after that.... So close, but so far away........
