Single Character RPGs: How Can They Work?

So did GTA 3. That is an RPG you know.

Even if that's true, it would be an -action- rpg, and we already know those can work. =P

Vagrant Story is sweet

Indeed, for me it is the very epitome of rpg's, right next to ff tactics... *sigh* memories...

Video thread!

Rm2k3 - Access violation error with reflect status condition?

I'm not sure about this since I haven't tested it thoroughly, but I think what you describe here doesn't happen in version 1.09a, try to look for it… the downside of things is that if you like patches you won't be able to use almost any of them on it.

Whats Your Favorite Historical Civilization ?

@Emanzi: Whoa, dude, take it easy, you're stepping into crazy territory right there... =P

But to stay on topic, my two favorite cultures are Indian and Mayan, I love pretty much everything about them, except the ugly stuff such as human sacrifices... but I guess that was just natural for them.

I also love all this stuff about mythical civilizations, ufos, angels, etc. in fact, my own game is based on it, but I only see it as really really cool fiction… until proven otherwise of course. ;)

rm2k3 stat algorithms broke?

I'm very curious about this, but I don't think I quite get it... Could you guys please elaborate further on why is good to have such big increases for weapon and magic attributes? And if you could give me some examples it would be the best; I suck at understanding rm2k3's inner mechanics...

Edit: Thanks, Craze. I'll be looking foward to it. =)

Single Character RPGs: How Can They Work?

Heh; I totally get Narcodis' and LockeZ's posts.

I tried this some years ago. But I guess it wasn't much of an rpg because there was no leveling up or stuff like that... what inspired it was the Max Payne games, but since I suck at making complex action engines, I ended up editing rm2k3's default system for the hero to have a kind of "bullet time" ability, in other words, tons of speed so he could get many turns in a row, cheap, I know, but at the time I thought it was genius.

Other key elements of battles were the ability to 'break' the enemies pretty much a la Xenosaga in order to dish heavy damage faster, and the learning of skills with combined effects based in the frequency usage of the basic ones, for example using 'Accuracy Up', 'Kinetic Up' and 'Headshot' many times each one would eventually teach you 'Boom headshot' an attack which could 'one-hit' pretty much every enemy while in 'break' status... see what I mean? Genius!

The problem was that pretty soon I found myself doing the same thing on every battle and sometimes for lengthy periods of time in the case of bosses: Stun-attack-stun-attack... But regardless, I still think it was a decent enough try, just not so well executed.

Main_Battle_System__001.jpg

Judging by this and the 'lifeline' video, I think the hero party and the enemy party are way too far from each other. I have the feeling that by putting them closer and centering them better on the screen, the battles not only would look nicer but also should go a bit faster... that way everybody wins!

Why is 'Back' on his crotch? Heh; ...Everything else looks great thou'

Dialogue, Characters, and You.

And why wouldn't you care for robots? They are people too, you know!

I agree that good dialogue characterization is something we all should strive for, but not too much, just enough… the examples you gave are kind of over the top in my opinion.

I prefer something tamer, especially because I try to keep my npc dialogues to just one text box, and almost never more than two, besides, I hate when everyone has their own accents, speech impediments, or things like that, it may work for some games, but I think is best to have characters speak as ‘normally' as possible… because at the end of the day when the magic is gone, all the players care about is the actual information the npc's provide, and they want it fast and clear.

Misaos and the Final Demo Release Date

Wow! That looks awesome! But please, don't use the text box like that, it gets in the way of the cool art, and it just look ugly in general... is better to add the text in a single line at the very bottom of the screen, it will look classier that way...

Heh; Gotta try this new demo when it's out. =)
