Breath Of Fire 3 is awesome!!!!!!

I liked BoF 1, but really fell in love with 2 and 3, especially. Unfortunately, my brother sold my copy of BoF3 along with Legend of Mana and several of my other PS1 RPGs when he needed some cash, so I haven't replayed it in years.

When BoF4 came out, a friend at the time said it was terrible, so I avoided it. I'm starting to think that I owe it to myself to check it out after all these years, if I can get ahold of a copy.

I was warned ahead of time that Dragon Quarter wasn't much like the other games in the Breath of Fire series, so that allowed me to bypass a lot of the aggravation that I might have had for its departures from the way the series feels.

But I found myself really intrigued by how the game played, and while I will completely agree that having to start the game from scratch to be powerful enough to survive is a frustrating mechanic, if you totally embrace it and build the game around it, it can really build a neat atmosphere. I'd like to see that concept used even better, with more significant changes to the world each time you reincarnate, or maybe a more open world or something.

EDIT: (Since I wanted to address this part in my post but completely forgot :P )

I'm also not a fan of Nina being a kid. Ever. A helpless one, at that. Especially given my favourite incarnation of her as a kick-ass magician (II).

I completely agree. I'm mostly fine with the inclusion of a weak, near helpless character that you're escorting to the surface in that game (and if you use her enough you can actually get her to be very useful) but the fact that the character is Nina really bothered me as well. If they had made the helpless kid a new character and added a competent badass Nina to your team, then that would have been a lot better.

But seriously, everything else aside, this thread is really making me want to play BoF 3 again :D

Back from the past with a new face (upgrades happen :P)

Welcome! I'm a newbie myself, but I've totally fallen in love with this community since joining not long ago! :D

[Poll] Hard time deciding about kind of cutscene and kind of dialog (CLOSED)

I'm really fond of how Phantasy Star 4 did it with almost comic-like panels that would pop up as people talked. It was really unique and fun, but it would take a lot of work.

Rune Rhetoric

I finished the demo! I'll put my thoughts here:

-Fantastic in-game character art. Each portrait really suits the character and really adds to the feeling of the game.

-While there is a noticeable difference in style between your art and the "stock" art, it wasn't all that jarring to me.

-Beautiful map design. You're very good at mapping! Each area is visually fresh and lively.

-My favorite part of any RPG is the characters, and you seem to be building a memorable cast. I'm very interested to meet more of them (like the Heretic Witches ^_^ )

-There were various times when the text got cut short because it went longer than the text box. Has that shown up for anyone else? Nothing vital was missed, it was just slightly jarring.

-Nero's hair seems to bob up and down slightly out of step with the rest of his sprite. Not a major thing, but it stuck out.

Looking forward to seeing more! Hopefully you'll be able to finish this before your target completion date of Dec. 2519, because it's highly likely that I won't live that long :P

The Main Characters

I love your character designs! :D

Release! And thoughts of the game's immediate future!

He's just wearing the Download button as a hat, that's all :D

Soul Sunder

Thanks! I was able to beat him and got to the end of the arc. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next! :D

What elements from existing games would you like to see reused?

I'll add another idea from Suikoden III (which manages to be one of my top games for providing interesting ideas I'd like to see elsewhere, above many games which I actually enjoyed more.) The actual level up mechanics of the game rendered it fairly moot, but I liked the fact that the main characters all start significantly above level 1, so that when you're introduced to characters who're actually totally lacking in combat experience, there's a clear and significant difference. A lot of games feature protagonists who start out as badass army officers or knights or whatever who're actually about as un-badass as it's possible to be in gameplay terms, and I'd like it if more games would show you tangible evidence that your character doesn't actually start at the bottom of the totem pole.

I'm all for more stuff like this. I think it builds immersion to reinforce story points through gameplay. It also bothers me when you fight someone who has, for example, an outrageous amount of HP and access to killer moves. Then they later join you and have roughly the same HP as everyone else and either don't have the moves or they've been significantly depowered. When something like that is done, just putting in some small reason why they were overly powerful (or why they aren't now) can really lessen the immersion-breaking of that.

On one hand, I like the idea of the "glass floor" in combination with VX's color distorting(though I dislike the circle it produces). On the other, I think the "normal" one you used before it works fine. I'd personally prefer that one to the glass floor.

@unity they're interesting, but neither of them are quite there, I think if you work a bit more on your layers it'll be nice.

Yeah, I think I'll stick with the earlier background and maybe make an extravagant multi-layed battleback that uses the swirly background for a special dungeon, perhaps the final one.

@Rast OMG I SMELL FFL
THIS IS ZAWESOME <3 ;___;

I second this opinion. Yay for FF Legend/Saga stuff! :D

Soul Sunder

I'm liking the game so far, but even on casual mode, I can't seem to get by the demon that you fight in the cave.
