Review Vote Guidelines
1/1.5 - so horribile I will not mention it. No one would like this trash.
2/2.5 - bad but with some good qualities or good
but with many bad flaws. Could have been worse and some people may like it anyway.
3/3.5 - from decent to good games. This is what I normally expect: entertainment. Some people may like it more, others less but it's ok!
4/4.5 - exceeded my expectations. These are must play for everyone.
5 - Rpgmaker Nirvana

*NOTE*: event games/jam submissions and other games that were developed in a very short time or with other restrictions get a rating bonus (usually +0,5), you are warned!

Penance Review

author=BluePhoenix
I'll let you know that there is a big update coming for Penance, one that can also be considered a 'remake'.
The gameplay, the main parts of the story and the battles are going to be the same, but the narrative and the characters are going to be vastly changed, all for the sake of the sequel that I'm currently working on.

Hey hey I know that lots of work went in this game so my question is... will it still be for RMK2003? I hope so as I love the style of this Rpgmaker version(I don't expect a faceset for EVERY CHARACTER, even if I've a friend that does that in ANY game he makes..it's not necessary)

Oh looking for a sequel too, strangely I expected a prequel instead... but a sequel is even better!

Thanks.
You mean the RmMV? I dunno. I'm stuck with Rm2k3 when it comes to game making.

Yep. That and RmVXace and RmXP. I think that Rm2k3 has a better graphical appeal and charming pixelated look (also less super deformed charsets, so for a serious game like this it was the best choice)

Lost Land Ruin: Volume 1 Review

Umm... While I appreciate the review. You're probably better off playing the remake of this game Lost Land Ruin VX, as it's a LOT more complete, more playable characters, and a lot less... problems. :P

I'll try
I promise.
BUT... I LOVE Rpgmaker 2000/2003. Sorry.
VX Ace hasn't the same appeal, graphically.

author=J-Man
This game didn't age very well, hell, I don't like it all that much, the remake fixes a lot of the problems I had when I made this on rm2k3.

Well I love the old sprites/chipsets taken from Albion. I guess that I'm getting old! :) I also think that the main problems/bugs could be easily fixed so... I'd be more harsh if there were case of unbalanced combat, bad mapping or sprites that are out of place, or other worse problems. Non-fantasy games are always hard to make due the few resources available.

Thanks for the review dude.
It's true, the rm2k3 wasn't the best engine to choose for the desired gameplay.
It was one reason to deliver a better story and some nicer looking graphics.
I guess I'll go with Game Maker next time.

Hey you did a great job anyway. Story parts were perfect, and I liked the art style (recent rpgmaker versions have that silly super-deformed charas and too clean scenarios). But yes, Rpgmaker is not well suited for some game styles (other games I played had poorer stealth sections, but usually these were just diversions), but it has a special place for me.

Hey rpgmakeraddict,
I will fix all those bugs for the next update, then let you know when it is out, so you can bump up your review to 4 stars!
Happy Christmas,
Faenon
Awesome! Feel free to mail me then! Happy Christmas!
Hey rpgmakeraddict! I have just put up the download for the definitive version of TCS, which addresses all the little bugs you mentioned. Do you think you could please edit your review to make it four stars now? Hopefully this would mean even more people would play it! Many thanks!

:) Absolutely! Said that and I meant that! Good job!

The Lost Demo Review

author=DutchPowerCreations
Thank you so much for you high score of 3 1/2 stars for V1.5.3 of this demo! I regret that there where black squares and the icons didn't show properly. It should look like this;

High score because I did not noticed errors, or problems, balance was good, maybe on the easy side since I always try to spare the resources for harder fights (the Fallen was the hardest one of course)

I do not know maybe the next version will display it correctly by the way I noticed that I was not the only one with that problem. I was able to understand anyway what the number meant (for example when the fanatic leader use his power to use the allies as human shields)

author=DutchPowerCreations
You are indeed correct about some characters feeling useless to certain play styles. I have seen with the people playing the game that they all pick their characters that fit their playstyles the best as you mentioned.
I personally like the combination Ragno(damage)- Kael(tank) - Persmerga(damage) - Mikatu (support skills+items).

My favourite team was Ragno + Mikatu + Reem + Kael/Akila/Sayid/Persmerga(I always need a healer, just in case, and he did more damage than Mikatu and Kael when healing wasn't necessary!)

This game is also the most violent and story-deepest game I've ever played for RPG Maker. Not a proper game for people that got disturbed easily, but definitely worth a look for anyone else.

Surely I did not expect some cutscenes and pictures used.
I found it more disturbing than violent. I used to play D.Doomsday Door and E.Eve return the Heaven, two japanese sci-fi/horror Rpgmaker2003 that were really violent (enemy bosses are killed in gruesome manners, there are severed arms and crucifixion) but all gore is on the pixelated level and there are no really disturbing pictures or scenes.

author=Tw0Face
I didn't like the mixed graphics that much.

Well the problem is finding modern facesets (and other modern resources) that not look too "anime"/super deformed/cartoonish. Personally I'd reather taken the facesets from Persona (like they did in "Mystery Man Zero").

I admit that because of the style of gameplay (I love the rpgmaker games and I'm bad at stealth games) and the disturbing themes this is not one of my favourite games, anyway I've to admit that this was made with a lot of work and attention to the details.

Theia - The Crimson Eclipse Review

It's true that you can't play with different strategies and members during most part of the playthrough, but I made this choice story-wise XD

Hey don't worry, when I have to look for a defect I tell to myself "what I would change? What would make me like this game more?" Well this and walking on the main map (since I'm old I like oldschool gaming hehe).

Ok, seriusly, the game is big and there are LOTS of characters (most Rpgmaker games have just barely a full party!) so it's normal that every one of us has some favourites and/or those that we can use better. The problem was especially one particular combat (I won't spoil but there one useful character, one inefficient character and one useless one... ) that create a sudden difficulty spike (and I think I was able to prevail just because of luck), and the problem is that the last savegame was before a looooong dialogue.

Heh. Probably If I could have chosen a different team it would have been easier, but it's ok as I won, it was doable. Maybe I'm bad using certain character types.

author=LolloRocketDiver
I wanted to take a different path from Fifth Era and Tales of Banalia because I wanted to give space to every character and to do so I splitted the parties to go deep within each character's personality and stuff.

That's perfectly understandable, clearly some scenes would have not been possible with a full party on the location, anyway I think that, for example, in Fifth Era there was no need for this: there were still parts in which you had a limited fixed party, and each character's story and character was well presented (Gravil & the rebels, Jun and her sister, Gaia's past, etc.), in fact I think that the thing I liked a lot was that there the protagonist was not the "Chosen one" but just one of the team that happened to become the leader.

author=LolloRocketDiver
But it's true that I should've given more freedom from earlier. I guess I'll do better next time! ; )

I'm looking forward this, so I'll give 5 stars! ;)

Theia is now available in english!

YES! Finally. Love this game, played to the end and beyond... and my review is ready! :D

The Best Battle Animations You've Seen?

Another Rpgmaker game I loved was Fifth Era: Fragments of the Holy Stone. While this game is heavily inspired by FFVII and FFVIII I loved it for its great characters (twelve party members) and their cool animations. I know that both facesets and battlers are Fire Emblem edits, still I prefer them to super-deformed or other cute sprites

Just quick sample (there are better special attacks and summons like Liam's Meteor Dance and Lord of Fire moves and a girl that turns into a giant bird before attacking! ). Nothing out of the world, still I loved them much more than those in FFVI and its remake!
