RMN Closing Down April 2nd

I have a lot of respect for beaker. Please don't namedrop him and include it in the same paragraph as "Braid"


Actually, the guy who did the sound in Braid was the guy who did the music for my The Particle of Infinite Free Will... He's a pretty cool guy. Hopefully, I'll be jamming with him a few months from now.


I hope wip considers just taking a break from this site for a while. I think the value of this site is being underestimated.

RMN Closing Down April 2nd

Just when I got around to uploading all my previous (applicable) games to rmn, using it as nice convenient hub for my games, this happens. All those links pointing to both my old ~beaker/ webpage, and the newer ones to my rmn pages will be 404ed. All those entries on the czech website databaze-her.cz and the polish victorygames.pl will be for not. Fortunately, the Russian site copied it over to their site instead (albeit, with a trojan in the installer, but you know, whatever). Then there were the French and Italian sites, but they weren't as interesting as the eastern bloc websites IMO.

I thought rpgmaker.net was too big to fail. I thought the government would just bail them out. When my dog died, I thought, "well, rmn will cheer me up." When my wife left me, I thought "well, I lost at love, but rmn is what really matters." When I lost my job and my home burnt to the ground with all my remaining earthly belongings, I thought "well, at least I still have a backup of my project hosted on rmn. I can work on it while I'm at the public library and sleep at the homeless mission..."

I will live on, but I am a broken man. My soul is no more.

Rework The Dead: Evil

My only complaint so far is that "ambushes" are always incredibly cheap as they're instant damage you can't really do too much about, no matter your skill level. What's the point in introducing a system that will always deal damage to the player no matter how good they are?

EDIT: At least this game doesn't suffer from all the same gameplay problems your previous game did.


I kept your previous review in mind during the development process, particularly about having non-linear level designs (though I only really started to implement it in the second half of the game), cheap enemies (like the little green guys you complained about), and that enemies can jump on top of you. Your previous review is also why I sent you that message back in January.

Now, with the exception of the fall in the tutorial (which is there specifically to get the player to use some adrenaline to recover health), and a few falls in levels 5 & 6 (which remove about a pixel of health), you don't have to lose health anywhere right up to point where you get weapon 8. For the ambushes you can either use grenades, the shotgun (in particular, it's alt-fire mode with 2 or 3 shells loaded depending on the enemy), or sprint intelligently to pass it without a scratch. Then well, once you get weapon 8, you can use it or its alt-fire too.

However, that's getting around the point that this game is fundamentally designed around the shooter/fps model and not the traditional platformer (much like its inspiration, Abuse). Platformer is the medium, but the design cliches it uses are from FPSs: alt-fires, sprinting, ammo instead of powerups, and of course, a lot of health /w regen items. Having to (or requiring a lot of skill not to) lose some health at some points is not such a big issues with these games.

The bosses however, well, I'll be expecting the reviews to rant about those. Especially the ones in the middle (and Id's in particular). The first boss and the very last bosses were designed fairly well in that you have to figure them out, and it doesn't take way too long to do so. The fight with the big guy in the screenshot should have had more variation as the fight carried on (there are no formal "stages" with the boss, but once you get its health down to x percent, change the attack types). Alas, designing and implementing boss battles were only slightly less eye-gougingly painful than making the cutscenes. :S

The last post on the third page mentions the company Matrix Games, which I believe also distributed the World at War game. I've been listening to the Three Moves Ahead podcast and if that's anything to go by. It seems the wargame genre, while obviously no longer percentually big, is living a decent life in the niche.

BTW: I hate you and all of your correctness. I had an awesome iron-clad argument and you had to ruin it. :3

Well, as stated, this genre has faded.

Yes, but again, one game every 5 years or so (if that) is pretty pathetic. If anyone would accept that a genre can possibly die, the wargame genre would be it. (EDIT: this topic is going too fast for me : ( )

Please, just put it out of its misery, it's been through enough pain. ;_;




But back to the topic at hand: I think it would be better to use "die" in a more figurative way to mean "fade in a substantial manner," say, akin to the loss of popularity of adventure games after the mid-90's.

If I had to choose a genre that I would guess would fade in the coming years, I'd say, RTSs. Not because RTSs will not be popular, but for the amount of strategy involved, players have to learn quite a bit. This is ok for now, but in the future I believe that these learning curves will be frowned upon by gamers. This, combined with a concentration in particular games (IE: Starcraft II), will turn the market into a small hand-full of series and nothing else.

I also predict that indie games will continue to succeed and become more mainstream.

Again, this is an evolution. How do you specifically define a Wargame? Or an Adventure game? All of the mechanics, features and definitions you would provide still exist in a vast number of games. They just don't exist precisely as you know them.

Panzer General is just an RTS with a war skin

This discussion has gotten terribly entrenched in semantics (what is a genre? what does it mean to be dead? etc.), but I will try to explain my previous point:

The "wargame" genre of computer games grew out of the tabletop wargaming scene in the 1980's (these were board games with a war setting, but in particular were always realism and historical based to appeal to big war buffs). This should not be confused with "games about war," since this is just a setting and not a genre. I'm familiar with the genre myself since my brother always liked them, with Panzer General being a big favourite (which is definitely not an RTS: those games are Real-Time Strategy games which concentrate more on action, while wargames are (usually) turn-based (like Panzer General), and are about real military strategy and history). Again, these games were made for the war buffs who could be able to tell you everything there is to know about the battles of the American civil war, WWI/WWII, etc. They were also fairly demanding of what constituted a war game: if you mentioned Call of duty being a war game to a bunch of wargamers, they would either just laugh at you, or at least start a huge flame war.

Anyway, this market, while not huge like adventure games were, was a decent chuck of the gaming market. Big magazines like PC Gamer would have columnists (in their case Bill Trotter) covering these games. In Trotter's case, over the later 90's his articles were reduced from their full page status down to half of a single column near the back the magazine, and finally in 2004, he finally called it quits.

Wargamers now, (including my brother), if they play anything that's called a wargame now, it'll probably be Steel Panthers - World at War, which was released in 1997. I guess there will be the occasional game made every now and again that could be called a wargame, but I don't think anyone in its marketing will even call it that anymore.

While what constitutes a "dead genre" can be debated since genres can expand, evolve, etc., those who call (or called) themselves "wargamers" or even those who hold that "wargames" were a definitive genre, would agree that wargames are dead. Honestly, I can't think of a better definition than that.

Genres dying out? Can you tell me when a genre of anything has ever died out of anything ever? Seriously. One example would be great.

Wargames (like Panzer General). Used to be an actual genre back in the day, but now, at best, is described as a subgenre of strategy games. Adventure games have also nose-dived since the 90's, I mean, adventure games used to be big business and the main type of triple A titles. At least with adventure games, they just recceeded into more of a niche market now, but wargames? Man, you'd have to be crazy to make one of those.

Rework The Dead: Evil

Yeah, full screen is supported. Just run config.exe->configure driver->check full screen box.

Native resolution is 320x240, so keep the 2x on (most PCs can run 640x480 full screen but not 320x240). As well, if there's a problem with that, you can also expand the resolution with the values in the top right.

There's also some filters for the scaling available like 2xSaI, but I suggest no filter, since that makes it feel more like a 90's platformer (and was what the graphics were designed for).


DE: Yeah, you're right about that boss. It really should have had more cues, and a modified design. I think that part is probably the least enjoyable.

The old logo needed an update since it wasn't pixelled that well, and hey, it should portray the increase in gore as well right?


...Strangely enough, when I show someone the old logo, they're usually like "aww man that's disgusting" or "you're sick," etc., but when I show someone the new logo the response is usually "Woah, that's pretty cool." :S
