Progress Report and Possible Engine Giveaway

Hello everyone:) Its been a minute since I gave you my last update on what's going on and I think its about time I tell you all and bring you out of the dark.

First of all, the game itself is doing a lot better than what I had intended it to be. I know that bringing in new ideas often pushes a game's completion date further and further, but its been well worth it so far. Due to the fact that this game is becoming more modern and being inspired by games such as Super Mario Galaxy and Sonic Lost World, the platforming has become better and more fluid.

Also, many stages have been re-polished and many new stage ideas are yet to come. I have so many concepts I want to implement, but I have only planned 64+main stages. Each stage is planned to look somewhat or completely different from any other stage to create that feel of variety and that each stage is its own world.

There is a special item I've created in the game called a "BGM Disc". With this disc, you can download any midi you'd like and play the song from a customized menu. The item is designed to have 120 playable songs from various games and 20 of which you can add yourselves. I wanted the songs to be midi because they are small in size and run a bit smoother. An MP3 version of the item is being looked into, but they currently don't work too well.

As far as the characters go, I'm going to release an updated roster of all of the current and planned playable characters from the game. They all may make an appearance in this game. But, I may save some for a new fangame. I'm thinking about making a Sega All-stars in Monster World.

Again, I apologize for the game taking so long. It started out simple, but the more I learned about the engine and the MW franchise, the more ideas that came to my head and the further I had to push back the release date. I pray that you'll enjoy it once I release the last to final demo and the final game itself.

And speaking of the game, if things are looking good within the engine itself, I believe that I will go ahead and release the engine to the public. You WILL NEED Game maker 8 pro for it to function. It has over 2500 sprites, 100 sounds and songs, 1000 objects, over 100 backgrounds, over 12 huge chipsets, and a ton of rooms from stages to towns and much more. Anyone will be able to edit and create a decent 2D platforming world easily with this engine as I explained how everything works in comments and tried to make it as easy as possible to understand.

I plan for the game to be at least 4-8 hours. With adding a storyline in between stages and making Story stages as well, the game's length easily increases. Also, there are 100 treasure chests and several key items to obtain around the 70 or so stages in the game. It is also challenging as a whole, which means losing lives is common.

<<<STAGES>>>
As far as stages go, there are 56 Main stages, 6 color-block stages, 8 story stages, and about 24 extras planned. I would like there to be 100 stages actually. Each stage with its own name and song so that no song is repeated in any other stage. Think of each stage as a "Zone" in a Sonic game. No Zone(exempting Green Hill Zone) is repeated and every one has its own special song. The same goes for Mega Man games.

Well, that's about it for this time around. This project has become something I never expected and I remember kentona saying in a blog somewhere to start out with a huge project to make the smaller ones look easy. So, I'm doing just that. Reaching a new destination

Hello everyone! Its been a while since I posted a progress report on this game. However, I've been working on this game daily and keeping things secret so I wouldn't spoil the whole game. I remember a time where I posted so many screens, its almost like you've already played the game. That is something that I see now as unwise and sort of overdone.

Anyway, I would like to give an update on whats been going on behind the scenes. First of all, I would like to announce that 90% of stages are finished!! There are so many stages in this game now. Stages are divided into several categories such as story stages,main stages,extra stages,special stages, and abandoned stages. When you play the game you'll see a bunch of new ones as well as ones from previous demos that have been abandoned, but not forgotten. Here is a screenshot of Silent Woods. This is where Bai lives.


Second, there has been several new concepts introduced to the game. Some including
  • Experience Crystals

  • Fighting game styled health bars

  • Monster-Transformation Power ups

  • Over 30 Power Ups as of now

  • Remade and replaced stages

  • New Characters from Monster World's various games

  • Cameo characters from obscure games similar to Monster World


However, monsters have been the main setback of this game.There are over 50+ monsters including custom-made ones as well. Its almost like programming over 50+ characters(which can be time-consuming). New monsters include..

I reviewed the storyline of the previous demo and realized, it needs lots of work in both information and text. This time, there has been a lot added to the main story revolving around our main characters, Princess Purapril, The Darkworld Prince, and Shion. However, an event occurs that pulls in other characters from Monster World's time periods and even sucks in characters from other worlds as well(hidden characters). I'm not going to go into it much, but I'm working on it.

  • New Music

Apart from the main development list is a bunch of new songs I found from games I've discovered from the past few months. Every time I hear a new song, I get inspiration for a new level. Several of them include..

  • Woods Level from Mickey Mouse:Castle of Illusion

There is still much to be done with this game though. I thought that after all these years, I would be done, but the development keeps growing and I'm learning a lot about this engine. This game WILL be done this year though, that much I can promise. Good to be back on the right direction with this game and thank you all who are sticking with me.

ALERT:Title Change

Hello everyone, this is a warning that marks the Title Change of Fantasia:Rise of a legend. The game has been known as that since the start of development and began when I didn't know what the MW series was. I simply found the series by surprise and it developed from there. Over time I began to think about changing the title to something more globally known and not some random RPG-like name that I came up with to be original.

This is the new logo for the title now known as Monster World Legends(MWL)If you will be looking for this game in the future, the old name of fantasia will be gone and most likely saved for a future game. However, I will be working on my Lufia game directly after its completion.

I just wanted to give a fair warning to anyone who will be looking for this game in the future. Also, the game is going great by the way. There is so much stuff to be done, but the overall stages are 80% complete with 7 more to create in the Main Story.There will also be some extras in the game also such as bonus characters and a MM Generations Package.

The Monster World Generations Package will be a large pack dedicated to the Monster World Series and will feature content such as games, music, history and several other information such as fan games(including this one).

Monster World Retrospective

Hello everyone! Since there are a lot of people who are interested into the Monster World series and there are a lot of people who aren't, I have a surprise for you! This is also helping me on the design of this game as well.Also, the game's name will be changed to Monster World: Legends pretty soon, I just have to create the logo for it.

I happened to find this perfect retrospective review that was on youtube and it does an excellent job telling you about the history of Wonderboy/Monster World. Enjoy the video and if you're interested and/or have any spare time, try playing some of these titles!

Future Title Change

Over the past couple of years, this game has been known as Fantasia::Rise of a legend. That was when I didn't know what I was doing in game maker. I wanted to create an original title, but I didn't know anything about the Wonderboy/Monster World games before I started designing this game.

Now, The game has become such a Monster World-Crazy game, I can't call it what I want to call it anymore. I would like to keep the name Fantasia, but I may save the name for a new platformer in the future.I have decided to change it to a Monster World name. I'm thinking Either Monster World Legends or Monster World Adventure. That way I won't confuse the veterans of the franchise and hopefully attract more fans of the series as well.

Plus, It is planned to be a true tribute to the Monster World Franchise and I don't want to create an original name for an existing franchise. Also, the game can't be named Monster World V in terms of chronological order because this game takes place after Monster World III, so I may call it Monster World III-2(Sort of like how Final Fantasy games use X-2 and so on.)

I just wanted to give a heads up for anybody who would like to know and not get confused looking for this game in the future. Thank you for reading and Happy Holidays!!

New Demo Out Today!!

Hello everyone, I am here to announce that a NEW Demo for Fantasia is coming out today. However, there are ups and downs to this demo. I hope you will enjoy the experience. Here are the pros and cons of the Demo.

CON)You can only play as Lydia and Princess Purapril(For a short time).
The character select option has been locked because all of them are heavily being remade.The reasoning for this is because originally, each character had DoubleThe sprites they needed to function. Now, I found a way to flip the sprites instead of doubling them(which wastes a lot of space).

PRO)There is a total of 28 stages to play through(20 Main, 3 Special, 2 Story, and 3 bosses).

Whats New?
  • Updated Power Ups(A total of 32)

  • Story Stages(Only Lydia's Story is playable at the moment)

  • Replaced SFX(Luckily MW4 had a hidden sound test and I got all of them)


Things to know
  • All character stories are being designed. Each character will have their own
    intro stage and will eventually meet each other at the world gates.However, only
    Lydia has a playable story.

  • If you get a game over, you lose half of your money

  • Introduction and Story Mode


If anything goes wrong, there is something you don't like, or anything of the sort, Please let me know! I want every bug squashed and every bad design to be tweaked. Otherwise, Enjoy!

What's New?

Ok, a lot has been going on in with this project, but I've kept everyone in the dark for while and I'm sorry about that. However, there are plenty of things that have kept this project going. Here is a list of what has been done.

  • Treasure Hunting

New to Fantasia is a treasure hunting system in which there area total of 100 chests to seek out. Each chest has special items that range from simple items to significant ones that will decrease the challenge of the game or help you progress further into it. For example, you initially start with a max capacity of one potion, if you find a potion plus, you can increase the number of potions you can carry.

  • Stages Complete So Far

Worlds 1-3 are now complete! That is a total of 24 Stages to play through.

  • Monster World III Tiles and sprites complete!!

Originally, One of the main things that made this game very hard to make was
the lack of tile sets. Now, I have ripped ALL the tiles and sprites from MW3 and a huge chunk from MW4.I will release them once the game is complete.

  • New Sound Effects

I took a long look around and I came to a conclusion that nobody has the sound effects from MW3 or MW4. So, I had to rip some of them myself. I may not be able to get them all because I can't disable the BGM on emulators, but I do have quite a few of them.

  • MW3 Towns Complete

I copied the maps from MW3 and decided to give them all remakes, so now MW3's locations are built in the game. I also plan on doing levels for the game as well.

  • Character Debuts and Re-Mastering Coming Up!

Along with the characters in the game, there are going to be plenty of new characters, cameo characters, and some that may just surprise you. Most extra characters are for fun and are unlocked upon certain conditions or simply entering secret worlds.

  • Power Ups Complete!

Within this game there are a total of 30 power ups that will make stages easier and fun. Two of the newest ones are the Light Wing(Float down slower) and the Magic Shield(Block Projectiles).

  • World 4-8 in production!

Worlds 2 and 3 were very difficult to develop concepts for. But, they are complete now:) Worlds 4-8 should be easier to complete.

There is plenty more that I would like to leak, but some things are better left a secret. I also plan on releasing a brand new demo soon, so keep a look out for it.

Fantasia Demo 2014

Its been quite some time since the last time I updated a demo for this game.
In order to keep this fresh, I had to go through some crucial re-design in the whole entire game. Here is a small portion of what has been done since the last update.

  • Parallax Scrolling

  • De-bugging every last error

  • Over 100 new things including traps,enemies,items,and
    so much more.


Today I will release the 2014 Rebirth demo with 14demos including 4 acts of Tropical Coast. The rest has been blocked due to level remake issues and development. Also, I haven't touched on the characters too much since the last update because I wanted to get the engine done first. Now All I have to focus on characters and levels.

I hope this makes up for my absence and will refill your faith in this project.There are several surprises in this demo too, but everything will be locked in the final version.Enjoy!

Stage Plan In Action

It took me a while, but I have decided the stages that will be visited throughout the game. Here is the list

WORLD 1)Tropical Coast
1)Splash Island:A group of small islands near the town of Pororo
2)Coconut Cove:The sacred cove of the world's most delicious coconuts
3)Isle Falls:A legendary waterfall said to be floating in the air with small floating islands
4)Barrel Ocean:The sea of barrels left behind by pirates. An undersea grotto is said to be here.
5)Bubble Bay:An underwater paradise home to an ancient sunken city. Who knows how much treasure is here?
6)Submerged Temple:The temple of lost knowledge. Ancient relics and items lie in this underwater tomb.

WORLD 2)Hazy Desert
1)Vast Desert:A mysterious desert which no one has returned from once entered.
2)Cactus Canyon:The highest point of Hazy Desert with poisonous snakes and cactai
3)Windy Ruins: Ruins that once was the home of travellers. But it was deserted over 100 years ago.
4)Sand Cavern: A cave where quicksand is abundant.
5)Treasure Passage:Secret Passages said to lead to the Tomb of trials
6)Pyramid Tomb:The Legendary Tomb of treasure in the deepest parts of Hazy Desert.

WORLD 3) Emerald Forest
1)Monsoon Forest: A flourishing forest that often has rain to bloom its true beauty.
2)Poison Swamp: A dangerous swamp home to posionous water and creatures.
3)Timber Tower: A tall, hollow tree that holds many wild life.
4)Mushroom Heights: The large mountains of Emerald forest with large, lively mushrooms.
5)Despair Woods:Lonely woods said to have once been burned down by mosnters under the command of Myconid.
6)Forest Sanctuary:A peaceful forest temple where one is tested to recieve its true treasure.

WORLD 4)Mamga Valley
1)Red Hot Sea: A sea of magma created by a volcano over 100 years ago.
2)Lava Pit: A deadly trap where lave rises until it melts everything in its path.
3)Volcanic Mine:A mine with lots of abandoned Mine carts.Use them to escape the tunnel of lava.
4)Hot Spring Hop:A pool of lava that can only be crossed by lava rocks and springs.
5)Steamy Falls:A tall volcano leading to the entrance of a temple.Beware of the steam.
6)Temple of Magma:The temple of the evil Tyrant Dragon

WORLD 5)Lost Jungle
1)Rusty Ruin:Ruins with easily breakable walls. Make your way to the temple!
2)Shifting Shrine:The shrine where temple parts shift to make a path.
3)Barrel Marsh:A deep,dark swamp that leads to the Rainy Plains.
4)Rainy Plains:A beautiful, rainy savanna with lots of flourishing life.
5)Sky Ruins: Ruins floating high in the sky.
6)Lost Temple:The mythical ruins said to be the the location of lost treause and the dangerous Gragg and Glagg

WORLD 6)Arctic Paradise
1)Aurora Iceland: A land of crystals and aurora
2)Arctic Musical:A chilly area said to hold a musical puzzle.
3)Ice Cavern:The ice-cold caverns near Childam
4)Star Parade: A slippery parade where shooting stars fall in the distance.
5)Blizzard Peak: The very top of a snowy mountain. Due to weather, this could be a dangerous area for travel.
6)Ice Palace: The palace where the Ice queen lives. She might be the cause of the blizzards.

WORLD 7)Sky Kingdom
1)Cloud Crowd: A vast sea of bouncy clouds.
2)Raindrop Ride: The area of gigantic raindrops you can ride in.
3)Flashy Islands: A strange realm where platforms only appear when lightning is present.
4)Floral Garden: A beautiful valley of flowers leading to an ancient location.

Progress Report

Various Updates

Several Improvements and additions have been added in Fantasia, here is a list of updates.

1)Parallax Scrolling!
-It took me some time to figure this out, but I have finally implemented parallax scrolling into the stages to increase the level detail and depth. It looks nice too:) I added this because most 16-bit era games used this to make levels feel more realistic and sort of deliver a fake 3D-like illusion.

2)New Power Ups and Items!
-Several New Items have been added since the last update!! There are now 27 item slots(check earlier image), instead of the original 12. Also, There are 6 keys in the game that unlock sections of other stages. For example, If I obtain the Red Key in stage 1, all of the Red Key Locations will unlock in other stages, thus increasing the nack for adventure even further. There are also fairies you have to save. Saving all of them in each world will unlock secrets.

-In addition to key items, I added several new items such as musical notes, blue spheres, targets, and Magical drops that increase your max stats for a stage by a small amount. There are more items, but I'll just let you see them for yourself.

3)New Stage System.
-Every Fantasia Demo you've seen up to this point was in demo format which means the next time you see a demo, the click system will be gone unless you answer a question in text boxes. Now, you will access worlds via World Gates.World gates are pretty self-explainatory. Simply enter a gate to access a world. To avoid complete linearity, I'm going to make it so that when you clear world 1, you can access worlds 2 and 3 for a branch off.The same will apply for 4, 5 , and 6. After the first 6 worlds are complete. It will turn linear with worlds 7 and 8.
-Returning now is the original stage amount I wanted when I first started this game.Each world will have 6 Stages Each with 1 Boss. This totals up to 48 main stages +8 bosses and extra stages.

4)Planned Characters.
-In each world I plan on unlocking 1 or 2 characters.I have finalized a total of 12 characters + Several Cameo Characters. Each Character will have a special ability that will make character picking crucial. Each skill is categorized by Jumps, Magic, Abilities, or Speeds. Here are a list of Jump Skills

5)MP3 Soundtrack
-When this game is released I want it to sound great so along with releasing the MIDI version will come an MP3 version where it will feature a HD soundtrack similar to Sega CD and other early CD based games. This will be great because the characters are voiced by crystal clear WAV files and there are some pretty neat special effects also, so adding an MP3 soundtrack will be fantastic for this game:)

Thats about if for this update. Originally, this game was going to be a simple project with linear gameplay, but the development for this game is getting very deep. I am done adding platform types for now, but as I make more games I will build upon it.
