No, it's up to people to decide whether they want to or not. There are a lot of people on here that I would share that information with, personally, but I've known a lot of you a very long time now, so I'd feel safe doing so. I don't think it's personal interactions like that which make a person unsafe - more where you link to and what information is shared there.
In this case, backtracking was done to facebook pages, newspaper articles and the like. They followed the username to other sites and found information on them to use against the victim.
