Description

Some of you might not know what a Release Something! Day (RS!D) is. Basically, it's a day where you release something - anything! - in order to get feedback from the community.

Release Something! Days used to be a regularly occurring events back when the community had a problem with releasing stuff. It was created as a way to encourage sharing, collaboration, feedback, and content in the community. The aim is to truly try to capture the spirit of releasing something.

It is not about prepping a major release, or making something in a fury to have something new to show for the event. It is about showing your works-in-progress, getting feedback, and checking out what other people are working on. Like a snapshot of RMN's development community.

WHATTA RELEASING?
Music, tiles, sprites, graphics of any type, gameplay (videos of gameplay tests are good), tech demos, demos - even completed games (but don't strive for a finished product; that's not the point of RS!D).

GOTTA HAVE RULES
- To 'Release Something' just upload it straight to this event page. Sign in/up, then hit 'Submit' in the top right corner of the page and browse until you find the file you want to 'Release'. Voila~
- You can release more than one thing, but try to make sure it's something you've been working on at least recently (say, in the last month or so). Keep it relevant!
- Release all through the weekend.
- DO NOT steal the things you see here, if someone wants feedback on a resource or script. I doubt we have to say it, but it's worth saying just in case someone uses the 'but you never said...' shit to justify being a fuckwit.
- To give feedback, use @username and then hide tags (depending on length and amount of feedbacks in post. So, for example:

@Liberty
[hide]this page is pretty awesome but hey, I think you need to work on your logo making abilities because holy shit giiiiirl[/hide]

GOTTA GET GOODIES
There will be a badge worth 10 MS for releasing something. One per person.
Best feedback givers will also get a badge worth 20 MS. Because the feedback is what counts most!

Just to re-iterate: You are releasing something :ANYTHING: that you have done on your project over the last month or two. It can be a screenshot, a face image, planned dialogue, a script snippit, a resource, a demo (if you have one on hand) or a video of a system or anything like that. It does not have to be something that you whip up over this weekend - in fact, it's HIGHLY ENCOURAGED that you NOT do that! Just dump something in! Or a few somethings!

I joined the event. I'm working on the tiles of MinST. Should I submit it as tile set, as screen shot showing the tiles or as playable game using the tiles?

Yes.

@pianotm: Haha that's fine. Honestly, I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for. But hey, it's SOMETHING released on RELEASE SOMETHING weekend.

@Pizza: Sounds good! Looking forward to seeing what comes from this.

@Ocean: I can't think of any games that did this off the top of my head. Was this look inspired by something? Or are you breaking new ground here?'

Some more feedback:

@Dyhalto: How far in development is this idea? I'm seeing a lot of overview of the basic backstory without much substance behind it. What caused society to break down? Everything seemed like it was doing fine before corruption came around, so just stating that an abstract purpose such as human greed is the cause of the breakdown a bit too vague to draw any real meaning. Judging by the file names, I'm assuming there's a chunk of story I'm not seeing, so perhaps I'm talking out of my butt here. Perhaps if there was a stronger, more clearly defined reason why society started breaking down, it would catch the eyes of potential readers/players much easier.

@unity: I'm really liking the monsters and the first animation sheet! By comparison, the second animation sheet looks rather flat and dull. Perhaps adding some more shading, particles, or glow would do a lot to make it more interesting.

@Kylaila: Wow. Those monsters look really cool! I really need to steal you as an artist next chance I get! Also, I want to know the inspiration for Buutheart... but at the same time I'm kinda afraid to know the answer.

@zDS: Interesting choice using pure black for a ground. I'd honestly recommend using a dark grey instead, as black looks more like a void than a ground color. Unless that was your intention. I really like how the wall and ceiling tiles turned out, though!

@Zero3D: I don't have any kind of context for your maps, but I'm trying to figure out why a vending machine would ever be in a nightmare realm. Also, I'd recommend putting a dark shadow somewhere on the title screen, perhaps use a black gradient fill near the bottom.

The druid factory has a nice build-up

These aren't the druids you're looking for.

Released something for a potential commercial horror game with custom and purchased assets!

@Dyhalto- I'm not sure if it has been brought up already but in the 05 journal you have "it's" when I believe should be "its"

God damn y'all are too fast.

I guess I'll start off with the images:

OCEAN:
-Icons are great

-With the character, unless she's supposed to be an action figure, the way her joints sort of have a ring around them looks weird. Tone down those dark outlines towards the center of each joint to make them actually look like knees.

DYHALTO:
-This whole thing is nice! I'd maybe choose a more pixellated font to better go with the graphics, however, or maybe do a bit more anti-aliasing on your graphics to make everything a cohesive whole.

INFECTIONFILES:
-Not bad, but I'm a bit bothered by how the trees look smoothed out and blurred compared to the grainy style of everything else.

SGTMETTOOL:
-Heh. Hard to say much on it because I guess it's kind of the style you're going for. I'm a little confused about the faceset. Is the background supposed to be white or transparent?

PIZZA:
-Amazing work, but I didn't expect less! I feel like the lighter green trees kind of overpower the dark green ones though. Maybe tone down the highlight on it to make it match better?

-That portrait is solid in my eyes. I like the minor details you added that really make a difference (like those veins in the eyes). It DOES have a low-contrast tonal value with its shading, but it's no biggy.

More to come...

Oh! That's very nice! That looks like a modified PV chipset. I love the whole atmosphere. Very grimdark!

@Ratty- Agreed! I'll look into changing that :)

@pianotm-Thank you! It's going to have very dark themes dealing with loss after a knight returns home from a crusade. That's at least a working plot, similar to Dante's Inferno but no actual visitation of Hell.

In the last month.
So my recent game page and all my screen shots would be okay?

Edit:

ummm... You can't connect game pages to this.

Edit / Edit:

Take Screen Shot of Game Page and enter it?

Edit / Edit / Edt:

Just did it anyways

Looks like I'm going for the right direction with my graphics. I aimed for cute, sorta retro-y, and I'm glad that's where it's going :)

EDIT: The Faceset is supposed to have a transparent background but maybe it saved wrong. Also, the first two characters have a reason for looking nearly identical, so I'm not too worried about that.. though I definitely agree that the eyes should be more distinct from one another.

@Ocean
These overworld icons are adorable! These remind me of those overworld icons in FF Tactics Advance. If you're planning to put these in a world map that serves as a navigation menu, you're good to go.

@Dyhalto
"Time has passed" sounds very dull and exciting. You could probably begin that paragraph with "As time continued to pass" or something to that effect.

@Pizza
These map tiles are very good. I don't think i have too much to suggest here, although I imagine that 45 degree ramp is rather tough to traverse. Maybe extend it by a tile or two to make it less steep?

@Zero3D
The style clash in your title screen is... strong, to say the least. I would spend a little more time making your visuals more uniform.

@Punkitt
I like the shapes, but those two blocks have conflicting shadows. Where is the light source coming from?

Yeah, some colour correction on the trees could be in order later on. This is already the fourth version of them, so right now I'm not worried about it, but I'll keep it in mind.

Regarding the portrait, I wasn't that happy with the rendering anyways. I just threw it up for something to submit, so it's not a huge issue to me- I usually do a little bit better with shading and contrast and such. At least, I think so.

The ramp shouldn't be a problem, as it'll be an automatic traverse as soon as the player touches it. It's not totally ideal, but I think given the engine limitations and the style of mapping/graphics I'm using it's probably the best option I can do at the moment.

@Red_Nova: The menu looks good, but I feel that the Drives box should be vertically aligned with the Items + Possession menus, and that the money window should be the same vertical size as the Buy/Sell/Cancel dialogue box (assuming it isn't- it looks a little shorter to me.)

@Punkitt: It all looks pretty good! The only thing I'd say is that the shadow isn't enough to give the box in the first screen a definite shape + elevation- it's too hard to see how it floats above the surface. Perhaps take one tile off the height at the right side, and make it more obvious that it cuts away on bottom there?
Ooh neat, I is in!

Err, I have a *really* small script I'm very proud of (invariably so) that I made recently. How do I go about putting it up here? CP it in a post? Dump it in a txt, zip it, then link it here? Take a screen of what it does?
Just upload a txt file to your locker to submit it should be good (then submit it to the site as a proper script!)
Okay, thanks! I'll start cleaning it up then.
Well hey, this is the perfect opportunity to get some feedback on a side project I've been working on before school starts. No artist but I'll post some screen shots of it when I get home. Curious to see what people think.
@karins: Just submit the txt file to this event page (there's an upload in the Submit section). That way everything is in one place.

@kory_toombs: Upload that image to the event locker (hit submit at the top left of the page).
Well, I'm not ready to submit a game page here yet for my current translation project, so I submitted a video of the intro of it here!

@Unity = Great monsters there. I like the green woman with the eyeball tummy.

@Dyhalto = Only screenshots of a book with text on it.

@SgtMettool = Those are great looking sprites. Face Sets have a great colourful feel to them.

@Kylaila = Maybe keep your file size down. It takes a while for those sketches to load?

@Thunder = Lava Cave shadows look strange in some areas.
@Cyberlous: I particularly like the music! Did you compose them yourself?

@unity: Looking at the monsters, I suppose the game is in an alien space setting?

@Zero3D: Neat, but the words look a tad unreadable. You should brighten up the words or lower the text box background's contrast.

@Thunder176: Do you plan to add a title name on the title screen? Because I'm not sure about having just a picture there. And it looks a little weird for the New Game, Continue and Options to be on top.

Other than that, the mapping is excellent!

@J-Man: Phantasia on a new engine! This ought to be interesting :D Battle system looks pretty neat too!

Yeah, I'm not that good, but thank you.
