Description

Some of you might not know what a Release Something! Day (RS!D) is. Basically, it's a day where you release something - anything! - in order to get feedback from the community.

Release Something! Days used to be a regularly occurring events back when the community had a problem with releasing stuff. It was created as a way to encourage sharing, collaboration, feedback, and content in the community. The aim is to truly try to capture the spirit of releasing something.

It is not about prepping a major release, or making something in a fury to have something new to show for the event. It is about showing your works-in-progress, getting feedback, and checking out what other people are working on. Like a snapshot of RMN's development community.

WHATTA RELEASING?
Music, tiles, sprites, graphics of any type, gameplay (videos of gameplay tests are good), tech demos, demos - even completed games (but don't strive for a finished product; that's not the point of RS!D).

GOTTA HAVE RULES
- To 'Release Something' just upload it straight to this event page. Sign in/up, then hit 'Submit' in the top right corner of the page and browse until you find the file you want to 'Release'. Voila~
- You can release more than one thing, but try to make sure it's something you've been working on at least recently (say, in the last month or so). Keep it relevant!
- Release all through the weekend.
- DO NOT steal the things you see here, if someone wants feedback on a resource or script. I doubt we have to say it, but it's worth saying just in case someone uses the 'but you never said...' shit to justify being a fuckwit.
- To give feedback, use @username and then hide tags (depending on length and amount of feedbacks in post. So, for example:

@Liberty
[hide]this page is pretty awesome but hey, I think you need to work on your logo making abilities because holy shit giiiiirl[/hide]

GOTTA GET GOODIES
There will be a badge worth 10 MS for releasing something. One per person.
Best feedback givers will also get a badge worth 20 MS. Because the feedback is what counts most!

Just to re-iterate: You are releasing something :ANYTHING: that you have done on your project over the last month or two. It can be a screenshot, a face image, planned dialogue, a script snippit, a resource, a demo (if you have one on hand) or a video of a system or anything like that. It does not have to be something that you whip up over this weekend - in fact, it's HIGHLY ENCOURAGED that you NOT do that! Just dump something in! Or a few somethings!

GO GO GO GO GO GO GOTTA GO FASTER!!!!

Righty then. Feedback time:

Liberty:
The walls and door looks good. I like how it's not super saturated so it won't burn the player's eyes when you look at them. That's also a really interesting character sprite.

You seemed to have solved an issue I'm currently struggling with: making the character stand out from the floor even through the outfit and the floor have similar colors. I'm having some trouble putting it into words as to exactly how you did it, though. Is Milla's jacket a higher saturation than the floor?

Deltree:
Wow that looks really good! The only thing I can say about it is that the numbers bounce a bit too high for my tastes. And seeing so many enemies on the screen take consecutive hits, it's hard to tell which enemy took how much damage. It looks great for that particular screenshot since there's only one enemy type, but if there were a variety of enemies in that troop, I feel like it would be difficult to tell how effective that attack would be on individual enemies unless the damage values were color coded.

Luchino:

The first screen looks great. Nothing really sticks out to me as a flaw.

The bow of the ship clashes with the rest in the second screen. I get that the edges of the ship are WIPs, but is the deck as well? If not, I'd at least change the colors to match the rest of the ship.

The port of the third screen looks bit too 2D. Maybe add some shading near the bottom edge?

The fourth shot looks great. My only real issue is that the head of the bottom left NPC looks a bit flat. It's especially jarring when viewed next to Ira's head, which looks fine.

I'll do more when I get the chance to.
@UPRC:
I like the animation in the title logo!

@luishushu535:
I see that it's concept art, so I can't say much. I would like to see more for the final product, though. I presume there will be a background for this title screen?

@Addit:
You really ought to finish Monopolo lol.

@Housekeeping:
The song would make a perfect epic dungeon :)

@BerryRMN:
Yeah, the original Cooking.png just looks weird to me. The new version looks so much better.

@Punkitt:
I guess what you're trying to create here in the unfinished map layout is a desert with several structures/buildings?

Okay, off to bed now.

OK sure give me an excuse to show off the map drafts I have spent waaaayyyyy too much time and effort on for what they will become!

Also an in-game photo with a not-yet-textured frame because I'm fukken proud of it.

@Archeia, It's so cool! keep up the good work.
@Katana, Nice maps.
@Housekeeping, neat little blob.
@Zero3D, Decent game, although way too hard due to lack of healing items and spells (if there are).

@Nessy
You know I've never got anything bad to say about your art, although, now that I look at it, his legs look awfully short.

@Addit
Without knowing what these are supposed to be for, those are very nicely done game icons and a very nice menu.

@KatanaHiroshi
And more! Coding involving lots of variables and no idea what it's all about, some very nice artwork, and boy are your maps big. You really do need to make those smaller. Dude, less is more.

@Housekeeping
I love how retro and thematic this is. This has all of the flavor an old 80s/90s PC game.

@Sooz
So, I click on the first two expecting to see more of Sooz's unimpeachable artwork, and...hand drawn city maps. They're very nicely done, too. I click on the third one and THAT'S MORE LIKE IT! I do love seeing your art. Oh, is your waitress supposed to have six digits on her hand?

@pooperflooper
And another bit of very nice artwork that reminds me of Tim Burton art. Also, those tiles...very art noir. I love it.
Moaaar feedback!

@KatanaHiroshi
Sure we go with more feedubacku!

Cute sprite, what is this bright green band tho? Is it like a name plate? I would try setting the saturation a little bit lower, it clashes with rest of the coloring, imo.

I really really like the lab! And the second classroom :) All concise. Simple but pretty.
I am not sure what the chair-collection classroom is for. Seems like there is a cut-scene there looking for clues around, but here is a lot of empty space. You may either artificially remove space by placing bigger objects or some kind of cloth-fence there (too tired to look up the appropriate word, lol). If it's an exception it should be fine tho. Still looking around THERE will be more annoying due to the number of chairs to check.
I like the look of the statue, guess that too will chase you around.
The monster has a nice black lining reminiscent of that black guy. Gotta be an enemey you can fight, otherwise the lining would be too thick (gotta keep it consistent with the others tho)

But yeah, just rambling. I'm tired out after working the whole day without lunch, lol.

@Sooz
Ohhh, I love sketches! That's a nice city-layout you have there.
Plus a nice vintage-styled drawn photograph? Looks very very good and authentic. Plus it's nice to see different skin-tones, 'tis such a rarity. They come out beautifully.

@BerryRMN
Weird alien critters, check. Food, check. I really like the ambience of the second screenshot - it also has a lot denser beautiful mapping. The first seems more like a make-do in a dungeon, and the kitchen-counter is soo long. The only odd thing is that the pans are way in the back, far away from where they are actually used. That seems quite unnatural.

@AceofAces
The starting screen looks very nice! Altho I think that the slight pattern in the background distracts a bit from the characters, but then you have the blue to red change going on.
the dungeon seems more practical, and so does the town. But they look like they will work splendidly.

@Pooperflooper
WHEE MORE BUTTHEART LOVE! ;) Thanks

I really really love the watercolor-like, or watercolor-digital mix you have going with the house. Makes it so atmospheric, but also has a great focus on the house due to it being stylistically different. I think I would've skipped outlining the trees and the hill, tho.
The screens are looking just as good. Simple and beautiful. I really love all these little objects - the record player, the radio. And that toaster! But on the walls as well with the air-thingies.
There are a lot of different patterns coming together (striped walls, checkerboard kitchen, tiles floor), but it still comes out looking very nice. I'm impressed!

@Punkitt
Talk about simplistic! This looks very interesting and visually pleasing with its simplicity. The contrast is very nice, too, between the blocks and the ground. Slightly surreal, but enjoyably so.
The waterfields do not come close just yet in their colordesign. The blue looks less like water and the darker brownish patch looks too similar to the strong yellow. The grass on the topleft has a lot of texture but doesn't work well posted in a cluster.
That said, I really adore your style as a whole, great job!

@Thunder176
Very nice! I quite like the simple variation on the crystal, makes for a simple neutral starting screen. Then the interior design is very nice, lots of tiles coming well together giving it a kind of rich majestic overall feeling. Feels like statues and (gods too?) seem important, or are just abundant. I'd like them to be important. The dungeon design seems more practical, the water portion especially (I would assume the floating pieces serve a gameplay function?)
but overall - very very solid. Good job!

@kr0x
ohh, lots of different stuff. I really really love the simple fluid linework. The sprites look gorgeous! The big guy seems to be walking rather strangely, but given the weird composition of claws and standing on their toes, this seems to work.
The mapped gif seems solid, but the saturation is very high. I think it would be very hard on my eyes if I were to play it full screen. That bright grass green in particular. I think a softer color would work a lot better.

The pixel-gif is really really pretty! The logo sadly is not as pretty, for the lack of outlines in th background clashes with the ones of the logo popping up.
Keep it up!

@Nessy
Ohhhhh.. riches. So pretty and detailed! For a second I thought the girl was sitting on a miniature city, lol. Guess I have to contend with crystals

EDIT: Wait, what, did I just go through the list? YAY. Now on to maybe play some games. Later. Ziggy's waiting and I know it.

MOAR RESPONSES TO FEEDBACK!

@pianotm:
Thanks! And about the maps, there's actually a purpose why it's really that big. It's both gameplay-wise and lorewise. Still, I need to add some details but I'll have to do it after this week due to our SIP (Science Investigation Project) that we need to worry about. Oh wait... About the MMC Map, I actually forgot to add another room so I have the chance to edit the map and add a new room since I'm still working with intro due to reading some informative articles. (It's easy to do but I have to do backtracks to make everything work the same way as it is.)

@Kylaila:
Thanks for your remarks of the two rooms! I still have to give them more detail to make it look like the thing that they were based from. The supposed "chair-collection" classroom is the Multi-Media Center, where gatherings, parties or activities take place and there are a lot of reasons why the chairs are stacked up there.

The Weeping Angel Effect is already proven in real life. I'm just adding the game with flare. And the monster? Oh man, I'm still reworking on it because it literally goes off the limits of the charsets.

Just make sure to eat lunch next time, 'kay?
pianotm

32388
@KatanaHiroshi: It's your game. I'm just saying. I've had problems with oversized maps in the past.

Quick question: is your Weeping Angel actually a character in the game? I've done them as Easter eggs, before (see if you notice the statue changing places), but have never made them a villain.

I love those sprites. The one in front looks like the love child of Star Wars' Master Yoda and Burt from Sesame Street.

Oh. A different comment. LOL. X3

XD Thank you. Though I'm surprised that you actually thought its a big mashup of both Yoda and Burt. XD ROFL.

No, it's just what it looks like. Wait...you mean you don't see it?

- This goblin is actually inspired by one of Aekashics' gunblins. I can't specify.. but I looked it up and I was blown away. While it took a lot of reiterations (to differentiate it and remove all the guns, capes and glasses), I did try to look up some other concepts like from Skylanders, Pathfinder, Clash of Clans (Yeah, I have quite the reference library to choose from.)

Hey, that's cool! Inspiration can come from anywhere!

I guess not until I checked it again. I guess if you tweaked the colors and remove Yoda's eyes mixed with Burt's nose... you could say that they do look similar. Guess not being much knowledgeable on Sesame Street can get to you sometimes.

More songs! They're really kool. The battle-track is again simple, but the build-up later makes it really fun. The chorus-esque effect makes it seem epic.
The other song is quite drawn out with some interesting variations, very decent. Really feels more like a journey, which seems to be like the end of a journey? So that is very appropriate.
I like that you reuse themes, it is a great way to build up suspense during your game. Nier for example has a magnificent soundtrack, and there are so many variations of one.

How did I miss this comment? Thank you sooo much!

I'm so glad you liked Against the Clock! Techno is something I've only recently started experimenting with (and keeping with since getting praise from nhubi on one of my SOS entries).

The drawn out song started as something else. In addition to rebuilding pianos, I also have experience working on pipe organs and I have a love for them. I wanted to do a piece opening with an organ solo. It was supposed to be a simple church theme cum mystery, but it evolved into this orchestral rock thing. I worked on it for a few days and abandoned it, but then when this event came up, I figured, I've been working on a lot of music lately, and I came back to this one. I never really realized how much I like synthesizers until I started working on this one.

I'll have to check out Nier.
Oh, very nice! Organ music is AWESOME. As someone who had the pleasure of listening to some great live performances (well .. piano and harpsichord and other stuff, too), organs just ROCK. My personal favorite, they are so fun to play, too! .. makes me want to actually get into it. Interesting, so that was the idea behind it.
Not sure how useful looking at it will be, but it's a great soundtrack, so have fun!

Here's my feedback. I'm mostly giving feedback from seeing the posted images here, not other stuff like music,videos, or game downloads.
@Ocean
Not much to say, but I like how big and detailed the sprites are.

@Liberty
Looks very interesting. The sprites are big and detailed and fit well together.

@Luchino
The tileset for the ship maps look amazing. Port Town looks good too, but it bothers me that the path tile doesn't fit in well with the ground tile. It also looks a bit crowded with all the barrels awkwardly placed but other then those minor issues it looks great along with the character sprites.

@SgtMettool
Looks very nice. You can really feel their emotions in the faceset, unlike some non-custom facesets I know of. This game's style also reminds me of Brave Hero Yuusha.

@Irog
Is this a tactical RPG? If so, it looks like it could play well. The graphics aren't anything great but I guess the gameplay will be more of a focus.

@kory_toombs
Wow, you submitted a ton of images! My opinions on the graphics are a bit mixed. The characters seem a little small compared to the MACK tilesets, but they look fine with the other tilesets. The cave (t2.png) looks very poorly made as the tiles don't really fit in well with each other. As for the battles, they look nice and could be fun. Maybe the text in the HP and MP bars can look a little less squished. As a final note, I do like how green arrows point to doors and stairs. It may come off as too obvious for some but I think it helps in a game like this.

@Pizza
Mmmm...pizza...Oh, about the images. The map in BeachWoods_2 looks very smooth and has enough space to walk around in. These graphics remind me very much of Earthbound. I can see a lot of potential here from these images.

@KatanaHiroshi
SO MANY IMAGES! Lot of stuff to talk about here. First off, your maps seem to vary in quality. Some maps are just way too big with barely anything in them and have too much empty space. Some tiles seem oddly placed. Some maps like the Tech Room however look great. You have responded that the maps are big for a reason, so I'll just leave it at that. The sprites you have look good. I like how you have nicely drawn facesets in the text scenes. The T.R.A.C.E. system looks interesting...

@Lucy_Fox
So...beautiful. Keep up the good work!

@dinkledaberry
A detective game?! Sounds cool. I like how the graphics look and the mouse system I see you have. Not much else to say but keep up the great work.

@zDS
Looks good with the custom visuals. It looks like you are going for a retro-RPG look for your maps here which I find good. Some people have said that the black ground in the maps and the battles look bad, but I don't find them bad myself with this style you are going for. If you are going to replace the black ground however, I would find that nice as well.

@CYBERLOUS
The sprites look good. The title screen looks WONDERFUL and has a very nice atmosphere to it. The portraits look like they need some more work on them but overall they are nice.

@AceOfAces
You have posted more screenshots of your game recently so now I have more of an opinion of them. The title screen looks nice but some parts look like they still need more work on. The maps look okay but are decently spaced out. The Rival.png image appears to show some sort of battle system...It looks okay but the squashed numbers on the bottom need to be fixed. The Rival graphic looks a bit out of place and small compared to the giant battle background.
AceOfAces
Engineering to infinity!
2138
@Kylaila, Huh, I'll tell that to my artist about the title screen. Thank you for the feedback.
NEW: @Zero3D, the squashed numbers is actually a drawing bug, now that I looked at it more thoroughly. Found the culprit and fixed the bug. About the battler, well the artist had to use the other battlers' sizes when designing the rival character, so this resulted to that. And she can only do so much to make it match with the rest. I'll forward this to her, see if she can do anything.
author=Kylaila
The blue might be a shade darker to have a similar contrast as have the other two.

That’s because it’s highlighted and flashes in-game. Regularly it looks aligned with the all the other icons, but during in-game when you highlight an option it will flash to white and then return back to normal. I took the screenshot in-game while it was currently flashing, so that’s why the Custom Rules icon looks a bit out of place here.

Okay - this is kind of interesting here… The pixelated portraits look great, but I’m more fascinated about what this could possibly be used for and what type of engine is this being made in? Hmmm…

Oooh – I think I remember seeing both of these things before in “The What’chu Workin’ On Thread” a while back. Very, very nice work. (Although why is the red hooded guy always smiling in his sprite? He must be a happy guy.)

FaceSets.png
D’aw…

You know who would appreciate this sort of thing, since he’s into dressing up into robes? BizarreMonkey. He’d love this shit.

(Also, is the grey hooded guy the red guy’s brother or something? What’s the relationship or difference between the two of them, anyway?

Heey – it’s a ship! And it’s RTP related! (Which is something you don’t see very often, especially with 2k3.)

It’s a bit bare at the moment, but it doesn’t look too bad. I’d probably just raise that picture that’s by the latter just one more spot up and put that barrel where Alex is standing in the lower right hand corner and that’s about it. Otherwise, not too bad.

Crog
(Irog)

map01.png, map06c.png, map08b.png

Hmmm…a tactics game, huh? (I was never really the greatest at these things…)

I like the MS-DOS like graphics, and I would imagine that the game plays very similar to those old types of games, like minimalistic music and those MS-DOS like sound effects. Now that would be awesome.

The game looks a bit jarring at first because of all the different numbers and units that’s on the screen with all the black outlining on all of the spaces, but I suppose it’s doing its best to emulate those type of old tactics games that were made back then for this sort of thing. I’d probably give this a try to see how it works and plays maybe for a future review, like I did with War On Christmas, but in the meantime you’ve done good here.

Kory’s In Da Tomb
(kory_toombs)

t2.png, t4.png, t5.png, tactics1.png, tactics2.png, tactics3.png, GamePage.png

Hmmm…this looks pretty interesting… So I’m guessing that this a game about a hired swordsman who has to protect a bunch of women for an assignment or something, considering that it looks like he’s the only playable party member shown at the moment. Either way, I like the concept, and the map tiles look pretty cool. Did you make them yourself? If so, pretty good work. This actually might be something worth checking out in the future.

Although, if I had to make one nitpick about all of this – just get rid of the arrows. I can clearly see all the different doors, stairs and cave entrances here on screen that having all of these things here are completely unnecessary... But if you wanna leave them in or provide an option to turn them off or not, then that’s fine
