How to approach a Girl......The Correct way. (Serious topic)

@Feld:
Certainly can't say you're wrong on any points, but I have seen some tragic failures caused by people taking advice too literally/too far/ignoring the responses and signals given by the recipient of their advances. My stance on the whole thing is that knowing how to act upon this basic advice so that you still seem pretty much like your normal self is just as important as getting that basic advice to begin with. However, I'm also of the opinion that if you're perceptive enough to know the former, the latter is kinda pointless and can only distract you from "being yourself".

Cliches aside, "be yourself" is excellent advice not only because of the trite "they have to like you for you" spill we've all heard but just because people in general (not just the ladies) are more comfortable getting to know/like you if they don't think you're modifying your behavior/trying too hard/shitting your pants because you want something from them.

The fact that these discussions inevitably turn into gigantic expositions on everyone's differences of opinion kinda tells me that basic social constructs only go so far :p

The sociology of this sort of thing is something I have a vested interest in and I'm willing to discuss, but everyone is pretty much going to make fun of each other. If the topic actually generates discussion, I'll join in.

I'm pretty interested to read and engage you on anything specific you have to say about this and I promise not to dismiss your opinions out of hand or generally be a douchebag to you about it, scout's honor.

And you say this topic won't help anyone? Thats where you're mistaken.

Hi, I reread my whole reply and I can't find where I wrote that.

I don't think the world is so cut and dry, and if anyone were to fall for something that you copied from a self-help book or a topic on RMN, that person probably isn't very deep.

but I like boys so what the hell do I know

This man is correct in my highly inflexible and disclaimer-worthy opinion. Anytime someone solicits advice on how to "approach" a girl like she's a tricky block-pushing puzzle, offering no specific insight into the girl herself, just makes me think the one who asks is so inexperienced that they view romance as a dating sim. Their failure is almost guaranteed.

Although I suppose it would work on women who are stupid and/or have had an astonishing lack of healthy relationships/male figures. Cue "how to approach a stripper you're attracted to" thread*.

To me the "right" mindset to have when meeting individuals of whatever gender you are attracted to is the same one we use when making/choosing our friends, namely that there are two kinds of people in the world: ones who will accept and appreciate you for who you are, and ones who can fuck off.

PS if all you're out to do is get laid then several of my friends have a depressingly high level of success with the method Feld describes above

*go to her first, pay for a dance, don't be a regular, compliment her tats, ask her what her life goals are (have a drink in your hand so you can pretend to take a sip whenever you feel the urge to laugh during her reply to this one)

So do you use rm uh?

Nope, never touched it, all I know about what it can/can't do is what I can glean from you guys' creations and discussions. I kinda envy you guys being able to prototype stuff in playable form without coding a whole bunch of crap from scratch before getting to even lay down a single map tile.

Character Sketch Dump

This is solid, def interested in seeing more finished stuff of yours if you're able to sketch with this kind of accuracy and variety in poses/angles. So many people get locked into pinup front-side-3/4 hell that it's pretty refreshing to see someone who isn't terrified of drawing people with foreshortened limbs n such.

Also yeah the Boondocks vibe is strong with some of those sketches, in a good way

Also. Music. Awesome.

no

not since you switched back to boxers

And yes music awesome, I will elaborate on my tastes and experience at an appropriate thread and time because I just know it's gonna be a massive spill

Also thanks for the welcomes guys, already feeling more motivated to get cracking so I have screens or at least a decent mockup of my current project to show omg omg \o/

Your First Game

I completed my first game in like 2000 when a friend gave me some install discs for Klik n' Play. I made a top down game in which you and a friend controlled mailmen who ran around various 1-screen residential settings shooting Uzis at each other, competing for the sweet, sweet letters that people would come out and stuff in their mailboxes while "minimizing" civilian casualties. It's the only thing I wish I still had off of that hard drive, if only for posterity because I'm pretty sure it sucked hard in execution.

A few years before that I was bored in the school's computer lab and QBasic 1.1 was standard with MS-DOS 6ish, so "psychic pong" was born, a pong game you "played with YOUR MIND" (ie the game played itself while you and a buddy rubbed your temples and stared hard at the screen) but that's so retarded I don't think it really counts.

I'm totally new

I've been lurking between here and GW (to a much lesser extent lately) for over a year and tonight realized that if I could get that much entertainment without registering, imagine the fun I could have as an active participant!

Seriously though it seemed a bit assy of me to spend as much time soaking up your games and screenshots as I have without at least trying to contribute a bit to the community here. Plus, you guys definitely have something to offer me when it comes to improving my own works and holy crap--a lot of you have actually finished games, and some I've played are damn good.

I'm an art student and broken-down former freelance pixel pusher with a programming background who is taking a masochistic total DIY approach to the first game I have ever been serious about completing (shocking spoiler: it's an RPG)

Other interests include music to a huge degree (both its creation and consumption), playing with my awesome dog, killing paper targets with my slowly expanding gun collection, cooking, reading (which I do more for education than entertainment, I have games for escapism >:D), and abusing parentheses. Favorite pastime though has gotta be hanging out with a handful of really close friends, going round-robin on who puts a CD from their collection in the player, using the best cross-section of our shared musical tastes as the backdrop for a meandering and always interesting conversation that continues until shortly after we run out of beer.

More to the point, hi.
