Favorite Final Fantasy Title

Another "What FF do you like?" thread.

I love FF6. I admit whole heartedly that nostalgia has a fair bit to do with it. I play this game through on almost a yearly basis. I think that the pixel art is unmatched in the SNES era. I feel that they did an excellent job of making a game with a huge cast of characters interesting. Even though the combat was very basic, I never found fights to be a chore or something I didn't want to do. Perhaps it was the battle music, backgrounds, and character animations that kept it interesting but it's very rare for combat not to feel like a chore in an RPG.

I also loved FF9, for some of the same reasons and some different ones. Although I really didn't like the weapon AP system (nothing makes me more annoyed then having to be stuck with a low quality weapon just to learn a skill.) I found the game to be fun and the battles to be sufficiently interesting.

I really, really loved FF12 and feel that it is easily the best 3D Final Fantasy. Combat flowed perfectly, hunts were a great distraction, challenges were all appropriate. Aside from Penelo and Vaan I liked the characters. Excellent game. It's a shame they put it out on the PS2 though. The PS2 was already near the end of its cycle, even though that hasn't stopped it from selling like crazy. I feel as though it would have made an amazing launch title for the PS3.

Ocean, I like what you've done to update the water autotile and can understand the frustration with the vxAce autotiles. If you want good looking shores, consider making them regular tiles. I doubt you're using the tiles to their capacity with a retro tileset like that.

Also, some 'in between' mountains would be nice. Something at a +16, +16 offset so they don't look so singled out.

I like what you started in the top right with the ground texture, too. I'd apply that throughout, and make some differentiations for various areas; The blank tile doesn't look good. It looks like un-sprited empty space.

Crusade appears to be made with competitive level Smash Brothers in mind. Any level that can kill a player other than by falling or ring out is banned from competitive play... Except the Halberd in Brawl for some reason.

In my opinion, unless you are playing 4 person and party-mode, the stage should do as little as possible. There are lots of options for that, not just Final Destination. Battlefield, Yoshi's Story, Dreamland, Smashville, Pokemon Stadium 1, etc.

[Request] Anyone have details on 'Sprite' or 'Window' RMXP classes?

Sprite and RPG::Sprite are not the same class.

You can see the method names for Window, Sprite, and such in the RMXP Helpfile.

The Contemporary Touch: Traditional RPGs for a New Generation

author=Craze
From the first post:

But I'm not trying to be nostalgic, and I'm not trying to be "oldschool."

I'm taking the traditional RPG formula and building upon it, not making Hero's Realm/Generica/Hellion (although to be fair, Hellion is actually pretty modern; it's an early 2000s wRPG with NES jRPG flair ("NES jRPG HURTMORE?")).

My story and mapping are also beyond the NES; I have actual characters and an actual world (although FFIII's layered world reveals were great imo, but I only played FFIIIDS which is in pretty much every other way a terrible game).

I don't want to make a traditional game, I want to make a game in the vein of those games - my class system is very inspired by FFV, but I also don't want to clone it. I'm still an indie dev trying to be creative!

No offence, I love the work you do and the creative shit you come up with, but it sounds to me like you are using "Traditional RPG Formula" as an excuse to have a shitty narrative. I agree with you that an RPG doesn't need a narrative, not in the slightest, but a shitty narrative (lol princess crystals demon lol) is worse than no narrative at all. It would seem that you want to make a gameplay heavy game. Which I love you all the more for; but why don't you just make it a Dungeon Crawler and skip this "Traditional RPG Formula" non-sense?

The Contemporary Touch: Traditional RPGs for a New Generation

I thought you were making this a lot more basic. If you start making such complicated, albeit good systems you run into the downside that the game doesn't match the gameplay. It will make your story and mapping seem worse than they are. I thought the idea was to improve on the classic formula and not reinvent the wheel.

RPG Maker Music Packs: Worth it or not?

Carnival is also my favourite. Reminds me of FF: Crystal Chronicles.

$40 is a steal for these packs. So $20 is a fucking rip off for EB!. They are fantastic, professional quality tracks and worth every penny.

If you want them to fix things with Ace, go to the official forums, start a topic and try to actually do something about it. Complaining isn't getting anything done. They've already brought out a few patches for some scripting issues they had with the first release. They do listen to input, if they're actually asked about it.

At no point did I say that they were not working on this. I have activated been actively keeping track of any bugs, problems, or missing features as I use VX Ace and have been active in helping resolve some issues at rpgmakerweb.com.

For the record, from reading your posts and your aggressively quick response times, I can assure you that you are the one coming off as an ass (not amerkevicus.)

If you posted this here to demand that we all sign the petition, you must really think you are an "RTP Princess".

If you posted this here to discuss the validity of revisiting an old product and whether or not it is worthwhile for Degica to legitimize it for the community, you are not being very conducive to the whole 'discussion' part.

An Official *English* Version of 2k3 Approaches!

I don't use rm2k3 but I did when it was new. I used it a lot, actually. rm2k as well.

No, no I would not buy this product if it was released.

Why?

Because what I already have, what I have already paid for, is better in every single way. XP, VX, and VXAce are better than Rm2k3 in every. single. way.

Who cares if the price point is different. I've already paid for these. I'm not going to spend $20 on something because it's cheaper than something I already paid for.

Rm2k3 was a pain to work with. An absolute pain. The only things that made it even bearable to use were the patches that would make using it just as illegal as it is now!

Also, who cares if they can sell an rm2k3 game? If they really wanted to, they could spend the couple of months it would take to port it 1:1 into XP, VX, or VX Ace, and sell it there. But, of course, they probably couldn't because they were either using RTP, Mack, or Ripped resources. There are exceptions, obviously, but being realistic? Probably 1% of the games made in 2k3 were using COMPLETELY custom materials.

This is a dumb idea.

Can we sign a 1000 signature petition to get them to fix the problems with VX Ace? I'd rather they work on a new and better product, or support their currently active product, than fuck around with decade old technology that isn't worth piss.

ALSO

In terms of breaking the law, and what have you. The reason that companies like Nintendo and Square go after any project that infringes on their copyright is because they HAVE TO. Copyright law works in a weird way. If they choose to allow a product through that uses anything they hold a copyright over, anyone else can cite that as the company releasing its rights over the work and legally create anything they want.

EB! can't come after anyone using rm2k3 illegally because they have let it go on for so long. There are massive communities which have communicated with EB! on several occasions. It would be impossible for EB! to deny that they knew there was an English patch, with a crack, that a massive chunk of people have been using for a decade. They have no legal right to persecute ANY person for using it.
