Hey MK2, just played through this and really enjoyed it. It's a very simple, clean, and effective game. Not very ambitious, but at the same time that's sort of the point; and then behind the surface story there's this strong sense of melancholy and the relationship with Valeran's father. Thanks for a nice 15 minutes!

Thanks! As a former fan of anime, I always appreciated how strongly a sense of melancholy pervaded those works (particularly ones like Wolf's Rain, Cowboy Bebop...). I tried to inject that into this story in the form of Valeran's struggle.

Can't play. it says: unable to find Graphics/windowskins/001-Blue01.

The game requires what is called, "RTP," to play. The RTP is a collection of graphics, music files, etc. that come with the RPG Maker program I used to make the game. You can download the RTP from the link below. Make sure to select and download the RTP for the program, "RPG Maker XP."

Atm I am testing several RPG Maker games each week to decide if my own focus will be on XP or Ace. Dragon Slayer made me want to just start developing, because it shows what can be achieved with a little time and lots of dedication.

Well made, review&rating is done.

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was a very fulfilling project for me, and I'm glad that others have felt it was worth the investment.

Dragon Slayer Review

Nice review Carvonica (I agree with Pokemaniac, would have been nice to have had a little blurb on gameplay, but it's not a big deal for my game due to the gameplay-lite approach I used). For a game of this length, I'm very happy with the 3-star reviews you and Emirpoen gave me.

For graphics, I did only use the RTP, even when other options would probably have suited better. The only custom graphics in the game were the Inquisitor tilesets, which I had happened across a while back before I started this project (I used them because I prefer a certain style of mapping for forests - I am not a fan of having huge blocks of identical trees...I prefer the "background tree" approach), and the title screen (if that can really be counted as a "custom" graphic). I used only the RTP (excepting the two Inq tilesets) to intentionally decrease the amount of development time.

As for music - with the darker tone taken throughout the story, there were only a handful (two, and the town one I didn't really like but I didn't want to use one of the other tracks) that fit the game's mood. That left nothing available for the title screen, so I figured that having no sound was better than a track that really didn't capture the feel of the game.

So, this is not to say that I disagree with your criticisms (I don't). I am just laying out my design philosophy which led to those valid criticisms in the first place.

Now, for the one piece of your review that did puzzle me a little, the story portion - of the conversations that compose the main plot, what confused you, exactly? I can think only of Neritha and Ashtara as being relatively vague references (although both are basically described within the conversations so that you have a very good idea of who both are). Were there any others?

Dragon Slayer Review

I enjoyed reading the review, and felt like it properly highlighted the pro's and con's as I saw them as well.

As far as the difficulty level of the battles - that was definitely a conscious design decision I made to make them err on the side of "too easy," rather than "too difficult." I started with "too difficult," but after dying several times myself (due to the damage variance) and realizing what this would mean for the layman ("a fifteen minute game, and I died...screw this!") player, I decided to make the battles forgiving in order to smooth the progression from the forest to the tower. If I had fine-tuned it better, I would have gotten to the sweet spot where the battles didn't feel so much like filler (which they basically are, in the game as it is), but as it stands I didn't have the motivation to do so.

Anyhow, thanks for the review. I did enjoy it, and will certainly take the criticisms with me if/when I work on my next project.

Carvonica and Emirpoen: Just got to read your reviews - thanks again for writing them (and, of course, the scores!). I will comment on both individually tomorrow night. I'm happy to see that my design goals were met, and that those goals resulted in an enjoyable experience for you both.

Thanks very much Emirpoen! Hopefully they'll get posted soon.

Thank you, I'm very glad you liked it!

Dragon Slayer

Thanks! I look forward to reading it.

Chrono Trigger had great graphics (and story, and gameplay, and...). Inquisitor's chipsets are very reminiscent of that classic.
