I'm working on a 500 frames long animation. ...I wish rm2k3's way to make battle animations weren't so retarded. xP
Go Make me a Sandwich: Sexuality in Bayonetta (and other games)
Wow! that blog is awful... Anyway, I don't really mind characters (either male or female) with really nice bodies, or that like to show skin. I see that mostly as the portrayal of an ideal of beauty, even if a little skewed; Or I see it as simple characterization if the game is of the less serious kind. What I dislike is when the game or people show a poor attitude towards those characters, or towards sexuality in general. And I think these are two totally different things.
I find it both sad and funny how the Tomb Raider series has been criticized from the beginning as one of the major offenders regarding this issue. And how it has been necessary to redesign the character of Lara Croft a couple of times now, each one with a more "realistic" breast-size and personality.
But if remember correctly, the creators have stated that they never intended for Lara Croft to become a "sex symbol", they just wanted a good action heroine. Sure, they gave some sex-appeal, but they also gave her a strong personality, and class. And this is evident in the games because there is no gratuitous imagery, no lewd language, nor anything of the like. Is mostly action packed game-play coupled with intriguing tomb-raiding story lines. ...Surely how the game was later publicized did take a part. But I think it was mostly the people's fault, both detractors and "fans" who can't see past the "polygons"
So, answering the question. Should we as developers take note of gender and sexuality? Sure. It sounds like the right thing to do. But there's only so much responsibility we can take. At the end is up to each person's maturity how much weight is given to the way things are portrayed in videogames.

Let's Draw! The Explorers!
This thread rocks! ...Your drawing is very good, Yuhikaru! Despite their simple poses the characters are drawn in a more personal style. I mainly tried to copy the originals xP I also like more the sizes you gave to every one of them.
Now some thoughts and my votes: (I suppose I can't vote for my own names, right? xD)
New Robot: I like the idea of new robot being a girl, even thought genders don't really apply to robots, the team needs more girls. xP I vote for B-32
Mechanic: I love how recurrent is the idea of taking parts from things, like Tv's and stuff, We aren't very creative, are we? xD I vote for Maxwell
Cool flower: Interesting character, no doubt. Do I notice attempts to name her like the autor? Varsha-lia, V-Azalea, xD I guess I'll vote for Narcissa
Drunk Dog: Whoa! there are a lot of B's in the proposed names. I wonder if that means something or is just a coincidence. I vote for Bob Bobson
Brave Cactus: I didn't know cactus could get over-watered. xD That's gonna be a funny to draw downside of this character. I vote for Geronimo
Dumb Cat: If I had known he was from an aristocrat family, I would have aimed for a more "classic" detective design. xP I like Inspector Gatteau
Bounty Hunter: Heh; I really don't know what to say about this character. I don't like him. But maybe time will change that. I vote for Blake Seam

RMN Battledome! Round One!

My name is mahashanaH. But those who fear me call me "The Essence Devourer" And those who don't, learn to do so as soon as I turn them into empty vessels of their former selfs... So you'd better know what's best for you, lowly creatures.
I need a good scripter and also design woes.
Well, my first thought when I saw the content of this post was "Locke & FFX-2 Yuna" So... What I'm trying to say is, that putting serious thought behind your characters designs is always a good thing, but just don't try too hard. They will always resemble some other character to some people, so mostly just go with what you like. =P
