How long does it take you to make a game?

so I'm working on a project, and one question I need a somewhat reasonable answer to is "how long does it take to make a game?"

This varies HUGELY. I thought I could go by looking at the date added value for a game page and then looking at either the latest blog date, the latest download date, or perhaps looking at the latest comment made by the developer, but.... that does not work in practice. A common problem with this idea is that people make a game page when they already have a download. This is only one of many problems with this approach.

So I am asking folks! I think the amount of time varies whether we're talking an event game or something made for a contest (which has set time limits and is pretty easy to estimate), a short project, or someone's magnum opus.

Even if you haven't finished a game, I'm interested in hearing how long you've been working on any projects of yours, or just Your Opinion on how long you think it takes to get some kind of download up on a game page, or how long it takes to complete a game.

For me, the three projects I have on the site are Adventure Ace (made for a contest, 2 week dev time), Demon Slayer (magnum opus, 5 year dev time), and Free Spirits (also contest, 1 month dev time).

heck, I'd even love Opinions on how to best get a time estimate.

The Smart Shooter for those who have caught on to the FPS military shooter’s dark secret: oftentimes these wargames are hilariously unrealistic and glorify violence. Spec Ops: The Line is a bold, daring new title that teaches us all a valuable life lesson:

War is harsh and damages both civilians and soldiers alike.

Alternatively, if one prefers to restrict the lens to video games, ignoring Real Life lessons in a game that uses Real Life scenarios and Real Life controversial tactics and appeals to Realism(TM):

Game narratives sometimes force you to do terrible things in the name of “just playing a game.” How fucked up is that?

Both of these lessons are things that could be gleaned with half a brain and far less than $60.

If you take the stance that one can learn valuable things about war and the attitudes involved, then the nature of its gameplay requires the game to shoot itself in the foot. Why yes, war takes quite the toll on people! Now play this game where you can only kill and kill and kill and then feel bad when confronted with the idea that maybe all that killing wasn’t good for you. Enjoy your regen health and unrealistic combat.

It’s the equivalent of bullying robots. Even Walker himself calls attention to this right before the infamous White Phosphorus sequence – you don’t have a choice in the matter.

If you prefer to ignore Real Life implications, you’re still left with a linear narrative that forces you to commit violence you may or may not engage in if you knew the full details. The cutscenes and dialogue are often heavy-handed – this is not a subtle game. So… yeah, sometimes game narratives force you to do terrible things in the name of “just playing a game”. How fucked up is that? Simply highlighting this fact is neither new nor revolutionary,(even the shooters SpecOps supposedly deconstructs do it from time to time) and SpecOps fails to actually do anything about it or give the player a choice in the matter.

The plot revolves around subversion of expectations and “deconstructing” the shooter genre without radically changing the gameplay or challenging core assumptions, acknowledging the nature of violence in games while providing no alternatives. You expect your standard FPS and what do you get? A game reminding you what a terrible person you are for playing it.

Hey, I'll even toss in a free link to an article that talks about the white phosphorus sequence, specifically, although the game is much more than that.

Despite all the complaining, I think some things are entertaining. (And I emphasize some since most of the game just makes my eyes roll in my head like slot reels.) The twists and turns about "what's real" and watching Walker's group fall apart sure are neat to watch. But I don't consider it a very Smart, Intellectual game, nor is it daring or revolutionary in the genre.

I collect dreams.

They're interesting! They can be fantastic idea fodder. Why not? If you've never tried keeping any kind of dream diary, it might be something to neat to attempt. The more you practice writing them down, the easier they are to remember, though I always feel like I'm never capturing a dream's "feel" accurately. Some things are just hard to translate!

I had completed my first project, and was very happy. The only part I remember about the project was the ending, which took place in a shrine on some generic tropical island. There were these three ladies who were totally rip-offs of Farore, Din, and Naryu, and they were drowning god in some unfathomably deep pool. They just kinda dropped god in there and the weight of her clothes sunk her; I was seeing it from god's POV, who didn't seem to mind the whole drowning business.

It was very dreamy...? Hard to explain the feeling, but it wasn't a lucid dream! I felt like I was half-asleep and moving through some kind of thick syrup. I couldn't taste anything, but it felt very sweet. I was just sinking down for aaaaages and eventually reached the bottom, where there were all these Lovecraftian monsters in the deep. It was a shame I woke up when I did, since what a cliffhanger!


I was working on a game with calunio. I don't really remember the game's plot except that periodically the main character would enter "corpse mode", where they fell apart into a pile of fly-infested gore and the world around them entered a similar state of weirdness! It was very surreal, but the MC had a really interesting walk animation I might make sometime. I could even hear the squelching whenever they moved! Despite the surreal visuals, everyone acted totally normal as if the MC wasn't a pile of twitching body parts, and when it wore off they didn't comment on it, either.

It kinda looked like this!I have never even talked to calunio.

(Since this dream I have actually talked to calunio! So I guess that makes it slightly less odd.)

I got my girlfriend and I a room at a love hotel... and it was incredibly unsexy and boring. We just sat in seperate beds and read books, and were both wearing floral print nightgowns that reminded me of grandmothers.


Those are a few notable ones I've saved, but I am much more curious about the kinds of things you dream about! Yes, you. The one looking at this.
