First Game Maker Experiences?
When I was a kid (like 7-10 years old), I'd actually draw up level designs for side scroller games on notepads (as in paper notepads, not the program). I had also drew an "RPG" on paper (like draft screenshots showing each area and battles in playing order.)
I must've had like hundreds of pages of this stuff. Unfortunately later on in life, I had an identity crisis and ended up throwing all of it out. I wish I still had them :(.
Anyways, after that, I worked a bit with flash and java, forgot everything I learnt, then eventually found Rmk.

What makes you download a game?
Like DE said, cool title, cool screens, modern/futuristic. Whether the advertising topic is well-done or craptastic. Whether the advertiser seems to know what he/she is doing or not. If I know/like the person making the game, then that helps a lot.
Oh, and reading good feedback from others is pretty important too. Probably more so than everything else listed.

- I don't remember when I got RMK, but I started out with 2003, and have been working with it since. My first game was like 95% RTP and was about homeless people.
- My first community was STG. I don't remember much about then, except that Colt was there and PTEI2 was a big release. Also that Roman was a jerk and SiliconHero left the community, leading to its gradual decline. I don't even remember what username I had then either.
- After it died, I migrated to GW. Sometime later, I got invited to RMN by one YDS and eventually came on-board. I guess it's been.. 5 years since I started RMK?
- Now I just randomly pop up every once in a while and post a bunch before disappearing for weeks to months.
