What Darken is saying is that you should make it more obvious that the game will teach you Japanese. I know it's not really supposed to be an educational game, but you should totally make the Hiragana-based battle feature a more prominent aspect of this game ^^

I think that changing the shape of the eyes would work.
The reason people think of starman is because his eyes are lined just like those stars. You could try making them dots.
Or if that's too 'empty', then you could make them small circles.

Hmm! I dunno, I kind of prefer the simple style. Depending on which character you're playing as, a specific background with their own Soul Shield will be displayed up top (Soul Shield will spin), and a generic background for the enemy when it's their turn.
I may have to add a few things to the HUD later on, though.
The font is called "Century Gothic" ^^ it's one of my favorite fonts. Do you think that it will look better when the background is moving behind it, helping to define the borders of the text a little? Otherwise, it isn't too late to change fonts. ^^
