HATCH'S PROFILE

An old experienced game maker, I've been around making games since the original Verge, moving on to Verge 2 and ika. While not as active these days, my ultimate goal is still to finish Mannux, my Metroid style platformer. I do still have a few new tricks up my sleeve...

Whatchu Workin' On? Tell us!

Stumbled across this thread, figured I should make a post as well! I've resurrected Mannux, once again, and am starting to work on getting moving platforms to work correctly. Hopefully that will be done quickly and I can move on to even more cool stuff, like more enemies, more environment interaction, and a demo boss. :)

Still alive...

Darken: how did I know you were gonna be the first to post. :D

I definitely agree, the world can always use a 2d metroidvania, especially since both Metroid and Castlevania have both stepped away from that. We will see what we can come up with! Look for more updates soon!

ika website

Was wondering what happened to the site myself.. now I know! Shows what happens when I don't go there for a while, heh! Sucks that it's pretty much dead as it's still the most flexible engine that I know of... not to mention my game is already half made in it. :P

Sca: I wrote a couple of the articles myself, I can try poking around to see if I can find anything for you, if you're still interested in using the engine. You can also take a look at my games, Mannux and Final Eclipse, to see if you can get some useful info out of those. I may not really be too active these days but I'd be willing to help and answer questions if you like.

Yeah I intend to make them less of a pain in the butt. Right now they are pretty tough to avoid heh.

Thanks, I'm certainly gonna try!

The physics are going to get tweaked eventually. Also, that's what having an automap is for. Also, isn't getting lost part of the Metroid style gameplay experience? ;)

I will take your suggestion into consideration! Jigglyness is always a good thing ;)

Just a quick update

Heh hopefully you won't have to wait *too* long :) since this post I also added fully working moving platforms :) the engine is pretty close to where I have all the features I need to make the game; just gotta start adding more content lol.

Why can't your computer play ika games?

Project Planning/Working Methods?

Just to put my own 2 cents into this. One of the things you need to do is to set aside a regular timeslot to work on your game without distractions. As long as progress is being made, your motivation level shouldn't decrease as much.

Secondly if you are working with a team, having a repository is.. Well, not a must, but incredibly useful. This way you and your other team members can submit files and changes to the repo without worrying about who else is online, and allows everyone to see the game progress without swapping files back and forth. (If you have no idea what I'm talking about, do a search for Subversion or Tortoise SVN).

Even in my case working by myself currently (though I'd like to build a team again soon) I have a repo hosted on google code. This allows me to work using any computer instead of only one. (Useful when my fiance wants to play The Sims and I wanna code, I just borrow her less powerful laptop!)

Finally, as stated above, plan plan plan. Create a design doc, a todo list, and whatever else you find useful to plan out what needs to be done.
