HATCH'S PROFILE

An old experienced game maker, I've been around making games since the original Verge, moving on to Verge 2 and ika. While not as active these days, my ultimate goal is still to finish Mannux, my Metroid style platformer. I do still have a few new tricks up my sleeve...

That looks pretty nice actually, very nice use of colors! love the layering effect on the coral!

Heh, I remember Blackthorne, though it's been a while! And yes, my game is definitely Metroid inspired. I wish I could take credit for the art but that's actually my friend Corey's work. He is awesome. :) He does the art while I do the coding work.

That depends on how well I can wrangle ika's canvas to work with light sources the way I intend, but if I can I absolutely plan for shots and explosions to light the way!

I plan on all weapons being used in some way to open up areas. Charging up things like the Wave Beam in Metroid Prime has been considered, yes.

Starting to add new weapons to Mannux, first up is a new particle beam:

An upgrade to this will give it three beams at once. Fancier effects will be coming, but just so everyone knows that you'll have more than a pea shooter in this game.

What are you thinking about? (game development edition)

I'm thinking a lot lately about the game design for Mannux, the various weapons/abilities and how the various areas will fit together. What abilities unlock which sections, etc. Making a Metroidvania is hard but rewarding work.

I've also been very much in a visual effects mood lately, thinking about cool particle and lighting effects I can add, having machine parts fly off when an enemy robot is defeated, things like that.

Good idea, I'll try that. Thanks!

Heh, my last blog entry pretty much was inviting help but never got any response. I'm hoping my next preview demo will get more eyes on the game, there has been a lot of progress since the last release. I would love to build a little bit of a community around my game...

I've recently started working on Mannux again, and Corey has started doing artwork for it. For anyone who has yet to see it, you can find it at http://rpgmaker.net/games/2283/. But it's difficult to make a game of this scope with only two people. I wouldn't mind adding at least one more person to the team to bounce ideas off of, someone who is familiar with Metroid style games and is comfortable in a map editor, to help build some additional maps for the game. At the moment we still only have the tileset for the main area, but even with that there is a lot one can experiment with to get some good variety of rooms. I can't offer anything monetary at the moment.. but a long term goal is to get this game onto Steam. The engine is getting close.. just need to finish the game itself.

A knowledge of Python scripting is not required, but would definitely be useful. Anyone willing to take a crack at it, reply or PM me. :)

Preview of one of the new maps. Yes, exccessive layers are excessive. But can sometimes make for interesting maps!
