Brave Hero Yuusha EX is now free on itchio!

Hey all! This is mostly a copypaste of the other blog post on Soma Spirits, BUT!

Going forward, Brave Hero Yuusha EX, the remastered version of this game, is Name Your Own Price on itchio. (And Soma Spirits: Rebalance)

I think these versions have been out for long enough that they should be made more accessible. I do want to note that this is something that has been in consideration for quite a while and isn't a reflection of how well Soma Union is performing. But I'd rather see the games find a wider audience rather than just sit there as they have been.

Please note that the Steam versions are currently unaffected by this change. Please only buy those versions if you want the added Steam benefits or want to support the devs!

So if it's your first time diving into either of these games, I hope you'll enjoy them!

Yuusha EX - A Mid-September Sporadic Update

Well! It's been a fair while since I've really sat down and talked with ya'll about Yuusha EX. The short version is that even with a lot of big life changes like moving and starting a new job, things are coming along very well. I guess you can stop reading there, unless you'd like some juicy details.

Progress-wise, I've got about 3/4ths of the first major pass (of at least 2 or 3) at revising the main game completed. About 80% of the graphical assets have been redrawn, including nearly all of the tiles, monster graphics, sprites, and battlebacks. This has been by far the most time-consuming change, but it's mostly over and done with. Hooray!

The second big change you'll find in EX is that the combat has been completely reworked and rebalanced. By far the most common criticism of Brave Hero Yuusha was its low difficulty and that the game was more or less a cakewalk. While there won't be much in terms of new core battle mechanics, I'm hoping to make the combat a more satisfying challenge for newcomers and returning players alike.

Party members will also have new and revised abilities at their disposal. The Hero, for example, has a skill called Bravery that makes their next turn a leap of faith.

There's plenty more that I want to share about Yuusha EX, so I hope you'll sit tight for a bit longer while I get this bad boy up and running.

For now, please enjoy our old friend The Whale in his natural habitat:

Brave Hero Yuusha EX

Well, I'll be frank. Brave Hero Yuusha is a game that holds a special place in my heart. After years of smaller projects, Yuusha was the first game I made that used all custom resources and attempted something on a larger scale than what I had been doing up to that point. Out of every game I've ever made, I think Yuusha was the one I was the happiest with.

While I've been working on and off on Crescent Prism over the last year and a half, I've admittedly been looking for a smaller scale project to help stave off the ever-looming threat of burnout. So for the past month or so, I've been looking back on the game I remember the most fondly and hoping to give it a bit of a facelift for a new generation of gamers (which by that I mean the exact same generation of gamers from the last time).

So came the idea of Brave Hero Yuusha EX.

The EX version will feature a number of improvements from the base game, with new visuals that aim to look a fair bit cleaner, more colorful, and more stylized. There will also be a newly-reimagined OST from Agent Ape, with the original soundtrack included so you can switch back and forth at any time! Some additional postgame content is also planned, so there's plenty of reason to give it a second go.

Also new to this version is the choice between male and female appearances for the hero, which you can change at any time:

You can also now skip random encounters when you are strong enough, similar to Crescent Prism:

And there you have it! I hope you'll all enjoy the second go at Yuusha when it's finished. So please look forward to more updates in due time.

A Year Ago Today!

Brave Hero Yuusha is celebrating it's first year anniversary today! Even a year later, people still occasionally talk to me about this game and their experience with it. Thanks to folks like yourselves, the dream is still very much alive.

As of this writing, the full game has been downloaded almost 1500 times and the game page has over 52,000 pageviews! And to be honest, I would have been happy with even a fraction of that. Yuusha's success exceeded all of my expectations and really brought about the confidence I needed to work on games like Soma Spirits and beyond.

It's hard to believe that it's only been a year. Sometimes, Brave Hero Yuusha feels like a distant memory that I finished ages ago, but regardless, I will always reflect on it as my first "real" game project. Here's to even greater projects in the future!

Moon Medal Guide available

Just a quick update for this project. I've made a Moon Medal guide available at the top of the page. I was meaning to document these for players for a while, so feel free to consult it if you're having any trouble!

1000 Downloads! ...And Misaos!

Today, Brave Hero Yuusha is celebrating 1000 full game downloads!Thank you all so much for giving this little game a spin!

And that's not all! Brave Hero Yuusha has also been voted Most Adventurous Game of 2015 by the RMN community! To be honest, I was surprised to see that the game got nominated for so many categories, and the fact that it won in one has exceeded all of my expectations for this project!

As I was making Yuusha, my hopes were that at least five or six people would have played the game through to completion, and I would still consider it a success. It really blows my mind that Brave Hero Yuusha went on to be one of the most prolific RMN games of 2015, and none of this would have been possible without your support! ;w; Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

Rest assured that I am also hard at work on my next project, which hasn't been uploaded to RMN yet but will be once I have some more work on it done! So please look forward to that!

500 Downloads! Thank you!

... Mind you, I'm going by the full game's download numbers. With the demo, it's technically around 630 or so!

I never imagined Brave Hero Yuusha would hit this milestone in just a few short months. To everyone who has downloaded the game and gave it a go: thank you, and I hope the game has been an enjoyable experience for you! I hope you'll share your thoughts on the game with us when you're done!

As thanks, I thought I would take the opportunity to share a remixed version of the volcano theme by SpecialAgentApe, the composer for Brave Hero Yuusha. Give it a listen!

Brave Hero Yuusha v1.02

Brave Hero Yuusha has been updated to v1.02. This update fixes a few more small errors, and fixes a glitch in the town of Canbrooke that can occur in certain circumstances.

Minor spoilers for this glitch follow:

Your ship would not be reachable upon finishing the ice cave. If you had collected all of the pages in the cave, this would not be a huge deal since you could activate the next scene and have your ship returned, but if you didn’t, this glitch was game-breaking.

If you are running version 1.01 and have a save file with this situation, talk to Anna (who will have her normal dialogue) and then leave the town to fix your ship’s location.

Release Day!

The release of Brave Hero Yuusha has finally arrived and the game is now available to download!

It has been a long year (on and off, to be frank) but I hope my love letter to older RPGs will be as enjoyable for you as it was for me when I was making it. Thank you, everyone, for all of your support and for waiting so patiently for the game's release. If you play the game, any comments and feedback are more than welcome.

Enjoy! :D

Development Update #3

Brave Hero Yuusha is now entering its end stages of development; with the exception of one large area that will take some time to finish, the game is now coming closer to completion. Once the final dungeon and end of the game is implemented, the game will be fully playable from start to finish. Hooray!

After that is completed, we will begin bug testing (something I’ve been consistently doing, but I’ll need some full, fresh runs) and touch-up, as well as adding a few minor things and fine-tuning the game’s difficulty level. I also need to touch up/redraw a few of the battlers, among some other things that I’ve been putting off. Along the way, I'll be checking to make sure everything is consistent as possible, look for things that seem "off" etc, and fix them as needed.

For the curious: I am balancing the game's difficulty to be moderate, but not overwhelming. Definitely more than "mash 'attack' to win" but I don't want it to be to the point where you have to be on your toes at all times.

I do not have a release date set set or anything of the sort, but I do not see this taking more than a month at the most to complete unless something goes horrifically wrong (I don’t forsee such a thing happening though)

I've added one more screenshot for your viewing pleasure. It will probably be the last one until the game comes out. :)

Thank you to everyone who has followed this project since its announcement! We’re almost there!
