Iron Gaia Review

I wholeheartedly agree with this review. This was one of my favorite RPGMaker games back in the day. I have since played other games that were better on a technical level, but this still holds a place in my heart. I thought it was a very well crafted story. My main complaint with the game were the inconsistent graphics and facesets. That's why I became very excited some (and subsequently disappointed) some years back when Max released the first 10% of the game with updated graphics.

Challenging/Very difficult game

Actually Kinetic Cipher made by that asshole Brickroad is pretty freaking hard, IIRC.

That's entirely uncalled for.

Is it?

edit: I'll clarify my statement. Brickroad is the one who wrote this article. Hence I think Max is entirely justified in disliking Brickroad.

Is the defense stat reduntant?

author=LockeZ
In SMT games (at least the ones I've played) there is more than one physical element. So physical defense is no more redundant than magic defense.

I know Nocturne, P4, DDS 1+2, and most of the early games only had one physical element. Then again, in some SMT games Vitality only influences HP and not Defense.

Games that nobody remember?

I found these in a really old issue of gamefan, which I got for my birthday
many many years ago. I never got a chance to play these...

...What's Alundra doing on the sega genesis?!?

Is the defense stat reduntant?

author=LockeZ
I've never heard of a stat that increases resistance to the physical element. If you include both, then yeah, obviously that would be redundant. I don't know of any game that actually does that.

Virtually every Shin Megami Tensei (spinoffs included) does this. I think the reason is so they can incorporate things like halving, nullifying, repelling, or absorbing physical attacks. Granted this is not a stat that can be raised through leveling or any kind of training, but it still shows up on your character sheet.

Discouragement

Since you seem to be in need of a kind word I'll just add my two cents. I quite enjoyed Journeyman. I've always been a pack-rat in RPGs and Journeyman fed this craving very well. The crafting and item collection aspect seemed very well put together. The main gameplay annoyance was that there was no quick way to switch to my battle gear. I had to go into the menu equip my gear manually every time I thought I might get into a battle.

I was looking forward to the more story-centered gameplay modes had mentioned. I have always thought that story and characters were your strong suit. Iron Gaia and Backstage had some rough moments but my desire to learn more about the characters and the world around them allowed me to push past the more frustrating moments. Journeyman as it stands is currently lacking that push and I look forward to seeing one in the future.

Also, you seem to have already made up your mind about this community, but making blanket statements that condemn this entire community only serves to insult the few allies you have left. Its hard not to take offense when to say the entire community is a hive-mind and they can go fuck themselves. I know those were not your exact words but that was definitely the impression I got.

The Customer Is Always Right - Perception Of Designer & Player "Responsibilities" In Amateur & Commercial Video Games

This conversation is inherently philosophical, because there is no right answer.

And it seems to me that there's a good reason this conversation keeps coming up: people quit due to criticism.

In the end, I hope the critics remember what their goal is when they write their reviews. My basic assumption is that the goal of such reviews in this community is to help the dev improve their games.

If the dev quits because of your review, you have FAILED.

If I'm coaching and I bitch a kid out so much that he quits the sport, I haven't really done my job in making him a better player, have I?

Yes, yes. You never know how someone's going to react. But given that quitting is a pretty common response, it's not as though that reaction is unforeseeable. So do remember that someone might quit, because you were too harsh.

That is, of course, if you want to be helpful. If you just want to be a quality critic, fuck their feelings, go ahead. I don't like you anyways.

I agree with this sentiment but I think its also important to note that if a developer quits due to negative criticism, they too have failed.

Real Social Issues in Videogames

I thought Persona 3 and 4 were very well done in terms of portraying actual teenagers. They were certainly leagues above most JRPG teens who given a sword and sent to fight the demon lord when they turn 15. I never attended a Japanese high school but I still identified with the main characters and their issues. Who hasn't had to deal with a part of their personality that they don't want to accept? Yes it usually does not culminate in a huge battle with a physical, demonic manifestation of your other self, but the issues were still very real.

Journeyman

People would probably be more likely to download your game if you didn't keep telling your userbase to fuck off.

Journeyman Review

This thread is very depressing. I became a fan of Max's games about six or seven years ago (he was known as Legion at the time). I loved Iron Gaia, Backstage, The Tower, Eldritch, and that other game with the Paladin Quest graphics that I can't remember the name of. They had numerous gameplay problems but had very good atmosphere and interesting character interactions. I have always been willing to put up with the rough gameplay in exchange for a nice story. However over the years, Max's games have become less and less story focused and the unforgiving gameplay had become more prevalent. I can't fault him for this but I always thought the story was his strong suit. Over the past few years it has been disheartening to see him freak out every time someone writes a review that isn't positive. I've been afraid to give any feedback for fear of causing more controversy. I was there at the Iron Gaia II incident and I understand why Max has become hypersensitive, but this is too much.

This was a very fair review and you treated it like emmych spit in your face. I don't know if this was your intent but in your long reply you essentially said that everyone who dislikes anything about your game can go fuck themselves. This is offensive to pretty much everybody. After this reaction I will find it difficult to play any Max McGee game, let alone give any sort of feedback. I hope I have not offended you. I do not wish you any ill will.
