I was only ever interested in RPG+Subgenre games. RPG 20XX's worth lies in the event processor system and the database system. It's much heavier than you would need for lots of other genres. Pixel movement has been brought much closer because of the newer camera model and my realizations, so it'll be possible to make all sorts of games through event scripting.

The variables will all be floating points instead of integers too, and you'll get lots of built-in math functions. Things like ring menus and advanced movement+collision will be easy.

I liked the original Mark Overmars Game Maker. Mark Overmars also invented the PRM (Probabilistic Roadmap Method) of robotic pathfinding, and co-authored one of the best textbooks on computational geometry I've ever seen. (Computational Geometry is a critical subject if you want a fast game engine). The original author of Game Maker really knew his shit, but alas it was made for the developer in mind.

RPG 20XX is actually designed for the artist AND programmer. I can actually approach the task as though I were graphic arts oriented and the things I would understand and want RPG 20XX to do. The existing event scripting in RPG Maker 2003 won't do, I need to improve the design somehow. Such more artistically inclined users will suggest features, but it is still my task to truly understand how exactly to provide them.

RPG 20XX appeals to the programmer too. It lets you write your own RPG engine (fun!) and use the existing editor without having to write your own editor. The .2xg file format was made simple on purpose: https://subversion.assembla.com/svn/rpg20xx/doc/2xg-spec.txt

I missed RPG games with actual level design. Now they're all procedurally generated open world games where most of the places all look the same. I'd rather have a world map full of dungeons I'll remember after playing the game, like Lufia II (SNES).

You want 90s!?!?

The Most Stupidest Game Ever - Re-duh!

Holy shit, I remember this game! I'm going to kill that save point!

Hence why RPG 20XX is being as ridiculously retro style as possible. Yes, it has blast processing!

I like how nobody tried using a 32-32 size tileset yet because I know I didn't properly handle it in the editor display yet (it would look all weird). They would have said something. Engine might play it fine, though.

There's tons of "rounded" tilesets for RPG Maker 2000/2003, but I've only ever seen one for VX.

Setting autotiles and animated tiles is driving me nuts. Some users have already mentioned how tedious it is, but I'm the one who's done it over 16 times during testing. With the toolbar and some accelerators out of the way, I'll think of a way to let you rapidly set all the autotiles and animated tiles you want.

Alpha Test

The wifi was too terrible where I was, I tried to edit my post. I misread you and thought you were talking about the editor.

The compile step must be working or the editor would not reach that. Try this: do a game->compile only, go into the engines folder and manually copy all those next to the .2xg file that was made. Then start rpg20xx.exe from there and see if it works.

Something may be interfering with the file copy method. The next update will have a different file copy method which should have a greater chance of working, so don't worry with going about turning on and off other programs on your PC. It's a design goal of mine for RPG 20XX to work even in harsh software environments.

Alpha Test

If it used to boot on your machine and does not now, then you aren't deleting the right folder. You did it right if the editor once again boots to a blank environment. Also completely delete the editor files and download again, in case the files in the 'engine' folder were messed with.

No, it just stops every time i try and play it.
I don't know what other information to give you.
I hit play, a window comes up.. it starts to run.. but out of nowhere a box that says rpg20xx.exe has stopped working.
Windows can check online for a solution to the problem.
And below that.. it says check online for a solution and close the program.. and then Close the program.
I don't know what else to tell you.
I have rpg20xx in a folder on my desk top.
Would that have anything to do with it?

You can factory reset by deleting the C:\Users\<Your Name>\Roaming\AppData\rpg20xx folder and try again.

I had put in 640x480 into the resolution part of the settings but I guess that's not implemented? or it doesn't determine window size?

Holy crap, that's explains it. That's the game size. Try it with 320x240. The default video scale is 2 so that ends up being 640x480. What you did was specify a huge view range (of 40 by 30 tiles!) and displaying that at video size 2 which is 1280 by 960.

I can clear the confusion by having you enter the game size in tiles rather than game units.

RPG 20XX will totally let you enter insane values and it's not going to stop you, so be careful.
