I don't like paying for games with bad tech...I had enough of my past eaten up by its bugs and quirks.

*clears throat butthurtedly*
Uh WIP, what's the most recent rm2k3 game you played? Cherry and Archeia have patched out the old kinks, and added some new features. It's one thing if you're bored of games made with the engine, but rm2k3's been officialy de-janked for almost a year now, and only a handful of games use this new version. also:

RM2K3 DID THIS SO YEAH

I know about all the work that has been done on RM2k3. It has not officially been "de-janked", but is a lot better than its original state. It's at the state it should have been 14 years ago, yes. You can't fix its broken core at this stage without a lot of work.

I'm honestly not as bitter as it might sound. I just wish this would end up pretty much looking like a modern 2D Dragon Quest; if that's what is achieved, I am all.

Steam Greenlight is dead: Valve introduces Steam Direct

Discovery is a hard problem all around. Look at even Amazon; if you buy a vacuum, Amazon keeps suggesting other vacuums. Even though you just fucking bought one.

How are we doing? A survey to help us improve RMN

Really, the drama Corfaisus tries to stir up here is so myopic it's almost laughable. For reference, here are the most recent stats again. Do you notice any trend that conflicts with the premise Corfaisus advances ("moderation I dislike will kill RMN", apparently) there? Something that has also been true for a long time, and only tends to get stronger?

Why, it's that all the "engagement" categories (Most downloaded game, Most subscribed to game, generates most discussion, etc.) are utterly dominated by games whose creators either never stepped a foot in the forum, or have very limited engagement, and are far from being regulars here. Yet, their work is clearly what the actual majority of visitors' considers the website's main reason for existence, and not the forums. They could get shut down tomorrow, and plenty of people would still come here to download Pom, Desert Nightmare and Pocket Mirror, and creators like them would still upload a ton of other games. Moreover, I strongly suspect the survey was meant to target those least engaged people first, rather then ones who've stuck around for many years.
It's almost as if the forum is... secondary. Who the hell would have thought that? Also since there's so much traffic going to non-forum pages, let's make a screenshot topic (?).

There didn't used to be an official forum. RMN was definitely one of the bigger fishes around.

Steam Greenlight is dead: Valve introduces Steam Direct

I'm going to assume Steam Direct is going to use some kind of sliding scale. If your game budget is less than $100k, it's $300. That kind of thing.
Or it could be something like ten times the retail price of your game (which is information Valve will actually have, unlike your budget).

Budget is definitely something that is shared with licensing agreements. Valve can easily ask for it; it isn't a big deal.

The big issue, now that they are going the route of iOS Store and Google Play, is discovery. Getting your game noticed at all is going to be difficult.

Getting onto Steam was a holy grail, because it meant that you got noticed. But that started going away in 2016 (when 38% of their library got added in a single year) and will go completely away in 2017.

They claim that their discovery algorithms are top notch and will help players navigate the oncoming deluge, but I bet dollars to donuts that there will be curator sites and lists and youtube channels popping up to cover the shortfall.

Maybe RMN can become the goto place to post your indie RPG game so that it gets noticed on Steam. Hm....

iOS and GP don't charge per-item fees. Apple does charge $100 for an entry developer fee and that's it. GP remains free.

Discovery is entirely the problem they have. Steam is abysmal to try and find content with.

That can definitely still be an aspect of the design. Responsive design can adapt to either.

Also it really needs to ditch this 976px main column. 1366x768 has been the most used resolution for a while now.
YES please thank you. The site has like five fingers of width on both sides for me and has for like six years.
Blame WIP.

How long have I not been in charge? :)

I liked you better when you were honest about being RMN's super villain and loving it.
I thought I was the super villain. My plan to destroy the world (of RMN) was almost successful. Nobody has ever come close.

On topic, though: RMN is old and hasn't had anything innovative to help developers in many many years. I guess it depends on what RMN should "be", though. It doesn't have to attract folks like me.

I'm in that pool of people who hope to put my game on Steam someday, and I'm not really tripping about this. We'll see!

Same here.

Greenlight was a bad system; ended up being gamed repeatedly.

I'm going to assume Steam Direct is going to use some kind of sliding scale. If your game budget is less than $100k, it's $300. That kind of thing. Plenty of other tools and libraries have that kind of usage.
