Answers:

What are your thoughts on the 3-Tile Rule?
If you can make it work, do it. Rules are meant to be broken!

What is your idea of a wonderful game make session?
Booze and stand-up comedy playing on a second monitor. Gotta lighten my mood if I plan to be productive!

What is your favourite genre of game and why?
Unpopular opinion around here, but racing. Of course I love RPGs and the like, but racing games feel like the purest form of competition.

How often do you gammak?
Uh... whenever I get the itch. Could be two dozen hours in a week or, well, a few minutes in a single month.

What's your best game-centric pick-up line?
Hey baby, is it just me or ar- Error: Stack Overflow

What do you look for in a husbando/waifu/game make partner?
Hey, I'll be happy as long as you're up for drinking, gaming, and test each others' games.

What got you into making games?
Level editing SNES games back in 2000. I am here because of the man, the myth, the legend... Don Miguel!

What are you most proud of, game-wise?
Actually finishing a 20+ hour game by myself. It's hard work when you're flying solo, and the motivation just isn't always there.

Do you believe in love at first site?
Love? No. Attraction? Yes. Love develops from interaction. You can't love someone just by looking on them. That's just creepy.

Are religious undertones in a game important to you?
Not even remotely, and don't even throw them in there haphazardly if your game isn't built around it.

What is the prettiest game you ever played and why? Am I prettier?
Uncharted 2. It was so pretty when it was new. Naughty Dog is amazing at recreating exotic locales. And are you prettier? Than a video game? How can one even answer that?

What is the last game you made/played, and did you enjoy it?
Final Fantasy IX! I totally enjoyed it, it's my favourite game of the Playstation era by miles.

What have you always wanted to implement/create but haven't yet?
The death of a main character. There are just so many variables to work with, player response being the most worrying.

What have you contributed to our sositey?
A positive attitude! Too much doom and gloom these days, we need more positivity.

Where do you come from, where do you go, where do you come from Cotton-Eye Joe?
I love that corny song so much, no joke. I play it almost as much as Boom Shack-A-Lak by Apache Indian.

Rips, RTP or custom? Discuss.
They all have their merits. I don't mind rips for fangames or small projects. I can take or leave RTP depending on how it is used, and custom must always be used if you're going commercial because you NEED to create your own identity for your game.

Are games art? Discuss.
Anyone who tries to tell me that the likes of Flower, Odin Sphere, Okami or The Elder Scrolls games aren't art need psychiatric help. I can idly stare at parts of those games far longer than I can with the Mona Lisa.

Do you indulge in gammak abuse of any kind? If so, detail.
I don't even know what this might be, but I don't believe that I abuse anything at all.

You've just been told RMN is going down indefinitely. What do you do?
That would be so horribly depressing. I'd just take my business to other game making websites and use Facebook and Tumblr to promote my games and show my progress.

2k/3 or XP? Explain.
I'm a VX Ace fan myself, but I'd choose 2k3 over XP simply because I grew up with the NES and SNES, and 2k3 evokes way more nostalgia in me than XP ever could.

What is your favourite RTP sound effect and why?
Wolf. Just because I love wolves. A lot. That howl sounds beautiful. DO note though, I've never actually USED the Wolf sound effect...

Which corner of the internet would you take me on an internet date and why?
We're going to reddit! /r/earthporn and /r/music will get us situated with a nice vista and good tunes.

Gameplay, Graphics, Story or Sound? Which do you prefer in a date?
Story, 99.9% of the time. I may as well just as 100% of the time, huh? But always story. An engrossing tale can overcome any shortcoming as far as I'm concerned.

I think that was more or less just the graphical style before FF6, since overworld and battle sprites were two separate things prior to that game. I can (and will) easily do it myself if others have an issue with it, though. I definitely don't need/want full sprites complete with animations for any of the card tournament opponents since they just stand where they are and react to winning/losing, etc. I might edit her colours though, since I never paid attention to how bright Rikku was before you made that comment. At the very least, her hair could be changed to a different shade of yellow. Maybe something akin to Jasmine's hair (how convenient that she's the one in the screenshot).

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

Man, the N64/Playstation era was so amazing for 3D platformers. Some others that are similar and weren't mentioned above that rocked are Ape Escape, Blasto, Gex, Glover, MediEvil...

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

Playing Darkest Dungeon. In related news, I've learned that I'm a masochist.

[Poll] A poll and discussion about random battle encounters: how they may be implemented.

I'll always prefer random encounters over scripted/touch encounters because I enjoy the unpredictability that accompanies them, and you're always forced to be prepared and/or expect the worst since you just never know what you're going to run into next or when it will be.

With that said, I chose the second option. After some complaints about the encounter rate in Blackmoon Prophecy II, I added a equippable accessory that the player acquires right at the start of the game which disables random battles. This allows the player to fight/grind on their own terms. It lets the player explore a bit if they choose to do so before finding out what monsters lurk in the area. I haven't yet added a warning that overuse of the item will result in an underleveled party that will struggle (because Blackmoon Prophecy II gets pretty rough in some places).

It's also great for days when you're just feeling a bit shitty and want to escape. Random encounters, at the worst of times, can make your already lousy mood even worse if the RNG gods decide to screw with you. Being able to avoid battles during times like that can very much be a good thing.

My lazyness in game development.

I can relate all too well. My last RPG Maker 2003 game took ten years to finish. Granted there were breaks during that period, sometimes for almost a year, but still. The two things that hold me back are:

1. Good games! When a game comes out that I really enjoy, my own games kind of become... forgotten for a while. 2015 was a HORRIBLE year for progress on my game because of Fallout 4 and Heroes of the Storm, and I had also picked up World of Warcraft again throughout the first half of the year. For most of 2015, I was probably working on my game for... maybe an hour most weeks?

2. An inability to figure out how to pull off something I want to make happen in my game. It could be a grand event or just a really, really cool sight... but if I struggle to find a way to make it happen? Progress grinds to a halt and can stay that way for weeks on end until I come up with an alternate idea. This happened semi recently in my current game. I had an idea set out for how the player would enter a major dungeon location, but I realized that my idea wasn't going to work when it came time to work on the dungeon. I pretty much stopped working on the game almost entirely for about... two months? Maybe almost three? It wasn't until just about three or four weeks ago when I came up with an alternative idea and, since then, progress has been really good again.

So yeah, my two biggest shortcomings are other games and my own unrealistic expectations/plans that exceed what I'm usually capable of since I'm FAAAAAR from being one of RMN's most skilled eventers and I can't script at all, so I try to make up for it in the story department.

With my current game, if I became INSANELY motivated and worked on it for 4-5 hours on weekdays and more or less all day on weekends, I could finish it by the end of February since I'm getting close to the final chapters. Unfortunately, and even though I do have enough free time, I don't possess the superhuman levels of motivation to be able to pull that off. Because of this, I'm shooting for an unspecified "first half of 2016" completion date since I know that it is a largely realistic goal.

Final Fantasy Blackmoon Prophecy Review

Yeah, it's awesome to see how timeless of a hobby gaming is these days. I love older players, the more the merrier. They always offer interesting insight!
