RED'S PROFILE

"Imagine a film critic who refused to watch any movie over 5 years old–no, scratch that. Imagine a film director who refused to adapt any material over 5 years old. The idea that nothing written 6-plus years ago could have anything to say is ludicrous, yet that’s the critical culture videogames have engendered. Modern games are worthy of our time, respect and analysis, while “classic” games are relegated to curio status; if they’re played at all, it’s with a “slumming it” mentality, like an adult binging on YA fantasy fiction. We assume that modern games have taken the best of precious generations while discarding what didn’t work, and that we are sitting atop the evolutionary apex of the medium. Games have never been better–except for next year.

Bullshit."

Why isn't there an E3 topic?

PS4 and Wii U for me would be ideal(and a nice PC!). But I have no monies! Also, mandatory PS+ for online multiplayer is a bit of a bummer, but PS+ is awesome supposedly so eh.

Excited for Nintendo's thing tomorrow because SMASH BROS.

Most downloadable titles with online multiplayer on the PS3 - for instance “Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light” – it’s very easy to find someone else to play with online within the first few months of it’s release. But 3 or 4 months later, once everyone has had a chance to play it, it immediately becomes very difficult to find another player online to play these games with.

...Now what’s interesting about Playstation Plus though, is that once it’s offered as a free downloadable title, there’s renewed interest, giving these games that have been released 6 months ago an extended shelf life and new online activity, just because it’s now being offered as a free downloadable title for Playstation Plus members.

I mean, I’m kind of bummed that online multiplayer won't be free on the PS4 but at this point because of the nature of these online multiplayer games, it seems almost inevitable at this point; Even though online multiplayer was free on PS3, I could never find anyone to play a particular online game with. I always had a much easier time just downloading or seeing whatever game was being made available for free on Playstation Plus.

[Poll] Xbox One or PS4? Which one will you be buying?

author=Trihan
So the gloves are off and both Microsoft and Sony have now unveiled their 8th-gen consoles. The question is, which one's got your vote, if any? Do you think the all-in-one entertainment centre goal of the Xbox One will work as intended, or will Sony take the lead with their offering?

Neither, Ocean’s Dreamcast!

…Gimme your Dreamcast Ocean!

…But in all seriousness, back in 2007 I bought a 60gb playstation 3 solely because, not only would I be able to continue to buy and play psone and ps2 games, but I would also be able play playstation 3 games on it as well.

…6 years and 3 YLOD repairs later, my playstation 3 is currently broken and outside of demon souls/dark souls and a handful of downloadable titles, there haven’t really been a whole lot of games that have justified owning a playstation 3.

I mean, it was probably the best psone and pstwo system. You could have more than four controllers without having to own a multitap and you could also convert your old psone save files to the psp with the memory card converter they sold a few years ago. But in terms of games, I dunno…

It just seems like, game developers can no longer afford to make the games that I want to play anymore; games like Katamari Damacy, Mad Maestro, Fatal Frame, Rez, Shadow of Destiny, Indigo Prophecy- you know, fun, interesting, creative games. Games that were usually relatively short in length but were still very much enjoyable to play and could still turn over a decent profit for publishers.

These weren’t indie games or smart phone games. These were games that you could probably beat in a weekend rental from the video store. These were the games that really pushed the system and contributed to the vast variety of titles during the early and mid 2000s. Games like Spy fiction, Dog’s life, Cygirls, Urban Chaos or Chibi Robo.

Most of the these games were kind of mediocre, sometimes even terrible, but the fact that they could exist, the fact that these games could actually be made and share shelf space with the likes of “Halo”, “Metal Gear Solid” or even, I dunno, “God of War” is what made playing these video game consoles so great. That you could walk into a store and if you were already tired of playing the usual stuff, there was a wide enough variety of games available that, you could at least go home with something different from what you were playing before.

The platform for these types of games, these “middle class games” have disappeared from the console market. They’ve all migrated to the smartphone and cellphones because it’s just too expensive to make games on these systems.

Games like, I dunno, La Mulana:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCTnpFbriLo

So I think everyone should pay very close attention to what’s going to happen in the next five years, because if history has taught us anything, it’s the system that’s the easiest to develop for and the least expensive to make games on that usually wins these things out in the end.

…I dunno. I guess I’ll probably get a Wii U or something…

…But if I can play NBA Street vol. 2 with 3 complete strangers over the Internet, then I’ll probably get the PS4…
But, that’s never going to happen…

I NEED FEEDBACK

author=Lotus_Games
But personally I'm with you Ashes, I like quicktime events =] I think they break the pace of just town dungeon town dungeon. Also I know I already gave you my feedback, but in terms of dialog I really like everyhthing...just more variety in dialog and interesting towns people would go a long ways in making the world feel alive =] Nice name change by the way, but I liked FEY man..you built a brand out of it...it's almost like you have to rebuild it now...even though it's a cool title.

Ugh! I’m just gonna quickly respond to this!

I agree with Lotus! The Quicktime Events are actually one of the many aspects that stood out in my mind about Fey, because they were done so incredibly well for an rpgmaker game! If nothing else this is what Fey does so well!

The deaths from these QTE’s they’re so immediate and so abrupt; it’s like poetry in motion, they’re brilliant!
Don’t change them! For the love of god!

I’ll admit, I’ve only played the earliest iteration of this game and but during that play through, I only died twice and they were both from the QTEs
This is important!

Now I didn't seem to care so much about having to reload from the last save point and having to replay a certain chunk of the game to get back up to the part where I last played from. Because to me it was a reward to see this grisly event unfold right in front of you and because something like this is just so incredibly rare to see in games nowadays; To see a video game capture the absolutely brutal and immediate nature of death.

Now the reason why this is so important because every other time the player “dies” they’re given the opportunity to cheat death! In my mind if nothing else, what Fey does so well is accomplish this dark and almost twisted take on The Legend of Zelda:

That at any moment, if you waver in your quest to save the world, this is what happens: Fey!

Now, if this idea is central to your game. You shouldn’t be trying to find ways to make the game easier for the player. God no! If anything you should try and find ways to emphasize this point! Go the other way. Make death more memorable.

Like for instance, in Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy(2005), in that game. Whenever you lose, the player is sort of rewarded with an improper conclusion to their game. That if they were to stop playing the game at this point, this is what happens, this is how their story ends.

Edit :I apologize, I didn't have much time to properly reply/revise this when I posted this, so I’ll try to revise this later on.

Games that nobody remember?

I’m gonna be a bit surprised and maybe even a little upset if no one can remember this next one: Kido Keisatu Patoreiba or Mobile Police Patlabor as it’s referred to in the West is an anime/mangaseriesblahblahblah, nobody cares!

Here’s a clip from the Opening of the OAV to get idea of where this is from;

(go to 0:50 for the crazy money shot)

Now, they’ve released several games throughout the series over a variety of platforms. The latest one being for the playstation portable. But the one everyone should be familiar with or at least check out is the one they released for the Super NES. If you haven’t seen this game in action and still work with rpgmaker2003 on a regular basis, you absolutely have to play this game!

It’s basically a Strategy RPG, kind of like Vanguard Bandits or Final Fantasy Tactics except without the elaborate customization or depth those games are known for. Personally, I’d like to think of it more as a turn based action rpg, particularly focusing on one on one close quarters combat.

…It’s actually a little hard to describe and it’s something you really have to see in motion, and since there aren’t any decent videos of it on youtube, I decided to compile one myself.

How it works though is basically this: An enemy approaches you in real time.
Once they’re within your range, at anytime, you can hit the A button and the game
will pause and place a target over the enemy you wish to attack.

(Offensive and Defensive Battle Menus respectively.- If you look carefully you'll notice in the video
that the background usually changes green or red to indicate an incoming attack from your opponent.
It's a very subtle visual cue but it's neat how it immediately tells you, you're in danger.)

Once you’ve selected your target the battle menu will open. There, you can choose to either strike your opponent through brute force such as punching, kicking, throwing or use a variety defensive maneuvers and disarming techniques utilizing police equipment.
Eventually with enough experience you’ll be able to combine these techniques and perform devastating blows against the enemy.

And in special cases if the Patlabor has a mannered pilot, you can even try negotiating a truce very much like the first episode in the series.

Now the game is very easy to play through, very straightforward, but the reason why I've decided to mention this game specifically, why you should check it out if you're still using rpgmaker, is because every action in the game is played out through these very simple, but very elaborate, gorgeous manga cutscenes.

Now this is such a great idea. Because like, what better way to exhibit the artwork of a japanese comicbook series than to have these scenes play out exactly as they appear in the show in such a way that the player feels a part of that experience?

But regardless, this style of "game play" is definitely something we should see more of. I mean sure it's a gimmick, but I’ve always wanted someone to take this idea and make it into his or her own thing and turn it into another game of sorts. The beauty of it is that, if this were fully animated or done in 3d, it wouldn't look as impressive; if these were clips taken from the show, it'd feel kind of cheap and almost cheesy like one of those FMV games I posted about earlier. And if it were done in 3D, you'd naturally want to interact with the game a bit more in a way that doesn't feel quite so limiting. So in a way, something this dynamic, can really only be achieved through 2D, parcel animation.

I've always believed someone could easily recreate this type of battle system in rpgmaker2003. But to pull this off you would need a really good illustrator, someone who actually understands the human figure and how it moves in three-dimensional space as well as composition, in order to create those really powerful dynamic shots as this is what makes the game so brilliant in it’s execution.

...So yeah, Kidoukeisatsu Patlabor for the SNES. Check it out!!!

I'm so glad someone finally mentioned Woodruff and the Schnibble! Everyone needs to play Woodruff.
It's very easy to find and very easy to play on SCUMMVM.

This game is absolutely insane. If you ever wondered what an adventure game would play like without
any text.
A game that actually forces you to listen to it's incredibly inane dialogue for hints and clues
in order to proceed through the game, this is it. It's pure torture but it's absolutely brilliant at the same time.

I'd catch myself rehearsing some of the game's dialogue, just so I could remember what the phone number was to
punch in. It's crazy.

Games that nobody remember?

Revengers of Vengeance reminded me of another game I completely forgot about.

Man, I can’t believe I completely forgot about Dark Savior.

Dark Savior isn’t a sequel to Land Stalker but it’s a game created by the same company, Climax Entertainment that has a really interesting premise.

“Dark Savior is a combination of three different gameplay genres: a platform jumping game, a puzzle adventure game, and a fighting game Aside from one or two sections, which blend platform jumping and puzzle elements, these three gameplay types are kept distinct and separate. The fighting game sections actually run in an entirely different gameplay mode; unlike the rest of the game, which features full 3D movement, the fighting sections use isometric graphics but are played entirely in two dimensions.”

“The protagonist of the game, Garian is a bounty hunter tasked with escorting a dangerous monster named Bilan to a prison island where it will be interred. During the voyage to the prison, Bilan escapes and Garian races to capture the monster before it reaches the captain's cabin. The time taken for Garian to reach the cabin determines the course of the game.

From there, the game sort of branches off into 5 different scenarios. #4 is rather interesting.

“Parallel 4 begins when parallel 3 ends. This scenario has a stronger science fiction element to it,as it revolves around the conflict between parallel universes. Conflicting realities cause the island to become unstable, and leave Garian in poor condition. In this scenario, Garian must rescue his friends to affirm his existence, escape the island and confront the source of the chaos, though he must do it within a time limit and without the aid of save points. This is also the only scenario where the source of the game's name, Dark Savior, becomes apparent.”

Code of Conduct isn't game submission specific. There is no need to bombard users with it when they are submitting a game.

The point is we already do a lot to foster new users, and I am satisfied with the way RMN functions in that area right now.

I know you really seem to expect action on this issue, but we're already doing pretty much everything we can do as a site/system. We have met new users at halfway, they gotta meet us too.

EDIT:
Seriously, though, you have suggested that "hey, we should do this!" and I showed you, "yeah, we do that", and then you said "Well, we should do this!" and I showed you again, "yeah, we do that too"... and yet you (and many others) don't acknowledge that and just keep asking for more and more. At some point the onus has to fall on the end user.

Yeah, I guess you're right. :(

I apologize kentona. It's just, it's hard to watch how users react to constructive criticism and the resulting drama that unfolds sometimes. But I guess there really are somethings they just have to realize on their own.

hi!
http://rpgmaker.net/submit/game/

A game must have three screenshots attached to it before it will be approved for the site. These must be submitted after you create your game profile. You are submitting a gameprofile, not just a game download. A game profile allows you to manage images, downloads, and other parts of your game. Ready to submit your game? Great!
