RAMZA'S PROFILE

I've spent a large part of my 26 years designing video games, mostly in my head. When I discovered RPG Maker 2000, I finally had a medium to put my thoughts down into, and I did.

At the time of its release, Mana Conquest was massive - even a ten hour long game was insane in those days, and the graphics kind of sucking was generally overlooked, due to the scope of the project.

Several years since, and I'm a bit embarrassed concerning how bad the first game really was. I've tried to fix that in the sequel, but between when I started, and now, there have been three new RPG Makers, and since they don't allow backwards compatibility, I've been stuck on RM2k3. Shameful.

I've come too far to quit now, though.

Windows 8 and RM2K3

Saw this on a microsoft KB discussion:

It is possible to accelerate and also fix fullscreen DirectDraw applications in Windows 8. However you will not get the speed you were used to like in Windows 7 or before.

Save this as a *.reg file and modify the path to your game executable:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers]
"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\YourGame\\GameExecutable.exe"="$ DWM8And16BitMitigation Layer_ForceDirectDrawEmulation"

Then run the registry script.

I don't have windows 8 so I can't tell you if this works or not...

I'll give this a shot next time I'm on nightshifts with my laptop. It'll give me lots of time to mess with it and compare the results to the other options we've got.

Tile Editor

Looking just the right amount of familiar.

What does the "Is Feature" option do?

RPGS... you've beaten

I feel the best way to approach this list is to list the games in the order that I played them, but that makes the list look super confusing, so I'll write them in the way they come into my head first.

That's all that comes to mind. There's probably dozens I've forgotten by now.

Ys Series

I had heard of the Ys series long ago, but never had given much thought to actually playing it, or actively searching it out. I bought Ys I + II during the winter steam sale and played the shit out of Ys I.

The bumping system took some getting used to, and I had to consult a walkthrough at one point because apparently I'm retarded, but otherwise it was a fun time. And the music kicked ass too.

I started up Ys II and played it for 20 minutes or so, before deciding that I'd come back to it later, it seemed like the second game didn't add much to the first in terms of mechanics, so it seemed kind of samey.

While I didn't have much issue with labyrinthine dungeons, I was disappointed that I hit max level so quickly, and also that the silver sword was hidden, and it wasn't until mashing my face against that bat boss for dozens of attempts doing minimum damage with a long sword to him that I gave up and looked at a walkthrough. After that, though, it seemed like I spent the second half of the game at max level with the best gear, so there wasn't much in terms of character growth going on.

I feel like I missed out on this when I was little, but it's too outdated for me to properly enjoy now. :(

Font Engine

I like this font. It's a good font.

I assume you can render certain font options simultaneously, like different color text without being outlined.

Sound Engine

While I'm not sure if it's the easiest method, I was able to use Audacity to record midi files that I played with a software synthesizer, save the recordings as .OGG and set up proper looping on them.

It's not a fast process, and involved some trial and error for getting the loops in the right spots, but if it comes down to this or paying for a license to have midis working, a little work is better than a lot of money.

How to add fun to grinding?

author=LockeZ
Amusingly, since it's a subscription-based game that costs $15/month, and leveling to 90 probably takes about two months, they're making the same amount of money whether you pay for the levels or not.

It's a trap though. The grinding doesn't end at max level in World of Warcraft. It starts there.

Really, it depends how much effort you've already put into making alts, as to how long it'll take you to get to level 90. If you have all of the heirloom gear, you'll be getting levels 25% faster than someone who doesn't, not to mention the added bonus of not having to worry about upgrading your crappy levelling junk (or most of it anyway).
Also, if you're really into it, you can use their ridiculously overpowered "recruit-a-friend" on yourself, and dual box a character to almost max level (I think 85 right now) at 300% normal speed, not counting the above heirlooms.

Even without those, I know people who can power level an alt up to max level in only ~20 hours played, and let's face it, if you're playing a game for less than 20 hours in two months, you shouldn't be playing a subscription game in the first place.

[rm2k3] Casting time | Question about DynRPG

I'll be honest, I have no idea about the font changing the version number.

I've just now read the documentation, and it looks like you need a v1.08 RPG_RT for the patch to work. I was pretty sure that 1.08 was the last version to come out, so your french version may just have an artificial version number attached to it.

Either way, it's worth trying, the worst that will happen is it doesn't work and you can easily revert the change if necessary.

Coming Soon

I hate to sound like a negative nelly on this, but I feel someone should probably point out the fact that your last attempt at this was only an extension to rm2k3, and took you substantially longer to make than you'd initially projected. And after years of working on it, you had a mostly working prototype, which was cool and all, but was devoid of what I (and possibly some others, maybe) considered the main reason for undertaking the project in the first place: replacing the buggy battle system.

Now, don't get me wrong here, you're awesome. This is awesome. Even undertaking the original project in it's original form was awesome, and what you completed for that one was awesome too, and completely usable, if a CBS was involved. Kudos to you. Even if I kind of seem like a dick right now, when all is said and done, I will be your biggest fan.

I'm just a little bit concerned that after what happened last time, and with all the other groups and people who're making open source rm replacements that always seem to disappear, that we won't see this materialize as a usable product. It seems like you're setting your sights kind of high, especially with starting over again fresh, you know?
