The official English 2k3 version is out!

As for the text box, I'm sure if you select DISPLAY TEXT OPTIONS and select 'Allow Other Events to Move' a character can move about while a text box is on the screen.

Characters, yes (you can move events), but I meant the hero, as in the player controlling him.

To give you an example, Final Fantasy vs Chrono Trigger. In the first, you walk to an NPC and talk to her, you have to let her finish the text box before walking away; in CT, you can walk up, talk, and move while she's talking (It even closes the text box automatically if the hero is far enough, not letting the text finish).

Quick questions:

Does the 1.12 version support 32bit color depth for Pictures? Or are we still forced to used 256 colors?

Also, is there a way for the Hero to be moved freely while a message box is displayed?

Thanks!

[RM2K3] How to go about releasing an epiodic game?

I think the second one could allow you to make the process more... "automatic" for the player, since he won't have to copy-paste the save into a new directory but just upgrade his folder with the new update, something an installer could do automatically like badluck said.

That's what I kept thinking, but since The Way did it like that, I thought some other way was... wrong.

[RM2K3] How to go about releasing an epiodic game?

So I'm considering doing a game in episodes, sort of the same way erm... "The Way" did it.

But I'm not too sure about how to go for it.
I've thought long and hard and I see two roads I could take:

1 - How "The Way" did it. Basically, each episode is a new project, and players have to manually import their save files into subsequent episodes

2 - Or I just create, say, 10 maps (just a number), for episode 1. Then, Episode 2, IN THE SAME PROJECT, I add 15 more maps, bringing the total to 25. Then, I put up a zip/rar file with 16 maps: 15 new ones, and 1 updated map that's supposed to be the map where the player last saved, with an updated event to progress into map number 11. Players then unzip/unrar the maps (and assets, I know), and overwrite the other map. (Did that whole thing make sense?)

I believe that Lun Calsari did it like option 1, because option 2 could corrupt projects, but I want to know for sure. What kind of problems can I run into with each option and, are there other, better options to do this?

The potted plants on each side of the... thing up there by the door look like its hands. Like it was seeping up from the floor. Spooky indeed.

Just create a new project and replace the old executable with the one from the new project.

Other RPG Maker games that inspire you?

I remember that Legion Saga introduced me to RPG maker-ing, and for that it holds a special place in my heart, despite its many, many shortcomings. I feel the jump from 1 to 2 was also a shift on Kamau's attitude, as he seemed to realize he could do it seriously. The 2nd was the best game.

And then came The Way. I loved the whole setting, and the complexity and depth of its plot and characters. Its episodic nature really inspired me and I count it as a huge influence.

These features are phenomenal. Thanks, Cherry!!

@Large: since there is no budget, the probability is low that this will happen in an update anytime soon because it requires a substantial amount of work and the 2k3 BS is still a bit black magic to me technically.

I'm not sure if you have the desire, but I know DHM added in Monster animation a few years ago to the unofficial 2k3. Maybe he can eventually chime in on whatever code changes led to that becoming possible. ^-^

I know he did. I was around when that happened. As I understood, DynRPG is NOT supported with the official English RPGMaker 2003 just released, because of code injection, I think. It's against the EULA...? Not sure.

I meant updating the existing editor to support this in an official capacity.

Quick question: things like Animated Enemies, for instance, and extended capabilities are something you couldn't include? Or are they on the table for the future?
