Just use switches or a variable to make events appear one at a time, they can be below player. That should work.

Or you could cover your map in a black tile, set it to cover everything and you don't need to erase your database.

I don't play stupid pokemon spin offs, do the battles take place on the map like in Chrono Trigger, or do you run around and slash enemies with the A button like Anything of Mana?
