EpiQuest

It's all a matter of perspective. The whole cup is half full or half empty outlook.

The fact that people are even bothering to report bugs and error means they are interested and want to see the game improved because they are enjoying it. If the game is truly as bad as you fear, then people wouldn't even bother to report bugs for a game they are not going to play. Think of it this way: If no one cared, why would they even go through the effort to find the bugs when they can just stop playing and forget all about it? Like people in showbiz always say, no publicity is bad publicity. Even criticisms are better than being ignored.

You would have something to be depressed about if no one even bothered to report a single bug after a thousand downloads.

Yeah it looks like you can't reunse your save files from D to E. I blame the nitpicker that wanted me to change things.

Uh-oh, that sounds suspiciously like me. Try to think of me as an overzealous fan. You need couple of anal bastards like me to ensure high quality products.

Anyway judging by the tone of your messages, if it seems like you're feeling rather discouraged by the whole game making endeavor, but you gotta keep in mind, this is your first game and one you produced with limited time and resources at that. By any standard, what you've made is impressive even if the reception isn't exactly what you envisioned when you first started out. It would be a shame if you stopped now.

EpiQuest

Rather disappointed that you aren't planning anything yet, but maybe once you get some free time, you should consider going back to it. This is a great game and has the potential to be one of the most popular game here.

ShortStar, do you have plans for future updates? If yes, what are you going to include?

That grandmother just killed 50 men with her bare hands and ate their corpses.

The review said this game was short. Since the game is rather big compared to many others, how short is it really? Can I expect at least 10 hours of gameplay?

EpiQuest

ShortStar, if I may ask, which skill is the one that takes the most to train and how many times to train that skill? As Edchuy mentioned in his review, it's rather time consuming and difficult to train skills higher than level 2 and in my experience, it's compounded by not knowing how many more uses before the long awaited level up. For example, you mentioned that most skills should level up after using them 50 times. Many times I've used certain skills 50 times and stopped using that skill in place of another skill to train. However when my character levels up, I find out 50 wasn't enough and now I must train that skill further and wait for the next time my character levels up. Things get tougher once they reach high levels. It might be hours before your next character level up when all you needed was 10 more skill usage. Had I known that before hand, skill leveling would be less tedious.

In some cases, this is further troubled by high requirements to use certain skills. For example, Hack Slash is a second tier skill for sword users. It has high MP requirements AND requires the user to wait 5 turns to warm up the skill before you can execute it. Combined together, they can make leveling sword skills far too tedious to be worth it. To make things worse, I'm not completely sure that Hack Slash will level up to higher skill even after I used it 50 times because maybe the requirement is 70 or even 100 times.

Of course all this can be safely ignored and just play the game. However as a game designed specifically for "Fragmasters" and "The Navel Gazers" as Kentona describes battle focused powergamers, only few changes are necessasry to be more user friendly. Maybe you can just include some more info on short description of the skill to let the players know how many uses it would take to gain the next skill and what that skill is. That additional information enables the players to decide whether certain skills are worth leveling up or not. As it stands now, it's like a box of a chocolate. You never know what you're going to get.

p.s. In order to gain every skill possible in the game (since I'm all for 100% completion), I've decided to use every single skill 100 times. Again I'm not sure if that is overkill or not enough.

Ever plan Dragon Quest games? You were lucky to walk 4 steps without a battle and those enemies really took it out of you!

I've heard a lot of people complaining about the enemies. Funny thing is they're totally avoidable, but if you want to plow into them, you can. The respawn is 10 seconds unless it is a boss or mini boss, then there is no respawn.

At later parts of the game, the enemies hunt you down when they see you, just like the dogs do! However, there is more room to run :-)

Yes, I found out that avoiding enemies can be mini game in itself. For example, early in the game when your character is still a "teenager" he gains less HP/MP than a hero character which means it is actually slightly detrimental to level up before being officially recognized as a hero. So during the first goblin cave, I avoided every enemy except the forced battles. To be honest, I found that to be pretty fun in itself. Of course, once I got the password to avoid the first quest, things got easier.

Ah that's very helpful. Thanks for clarifying the skill usage.

And yes I'm still impressed with the game. There are many little things I really like about this game. I'll write an official review once I finish the game. I'm thoroughly exploring every nook and crevices so that might take a little while. If the game can maintain the same amount of fun and excitement until the end, then this game might be better than many store bought games.

EpiQuest

ShortStar, I successfully downloaded the latest version and I'm happily playing the game. Amazing work. I'm especially impressed by the amount of detail you put into every single house. I'm only at the first village but it is beautifully designed. However I'm somewhat confused on learning skills. When I was at the goblin cave, my teenager character used the heal orb over 60 times but he still didn't learn any heal spell. Is that because he isn't officially a "hero" yet? Also can you learn all the skills you get from items? For example, the disarm skill you get from Quick Cut Knife, can you learn that permanently if you use it enough or is that only for the basic skills?
