Might be needing more love

Might Be Magic: Stolen Love is an RPG Maker VX Ace game created for the McBacon Game Jam event. The current state of the game is a demo and this review was submitted on September 20, 2016 (in case the game ever gets updated.) This game will overview what the game has to offer and what I think it can do to improve on its features.

This game is all about Marrend, and no I'm not kidding. Marrend is feeling down and gloomy. His best friend suggests that he might feel better if he finds a mighty hammer (I'm guessing Marrend has something to compensate for, which is why he's in the dumps?) A short one minute walk later they bump into two other character who decide to join them because... I'm still not quite sure. In summary the game's story is just sort of there and you can probably ignore it and get just as much out of the experience.

I want to go over there... And over there too.

You'll spend your short time in this game walking around in a pretty interesting environment. The tile set is well done and the mapping gives the game an interesting flavor. The background music also seems nice and fitting. This is probably the strongest point of the game. It falls flat when you realize all the tiles you can't walk over. The game presents a maze like feature where you're trying to figure out where to go (mostly by guessing if you can walk over certain tiles or not, which isn't made very clear.) I would rather have the ability to explore the beauty of this world rather than be constrained by objects that shouldn't be stopping my progress.

The game also has jumping (well sort of.) In certain places you can jump if there is an event in place to tell you that your character can jump. So while your exploring this maze you'll also be trying to figure out where you can stand and jump and where you can't. This makes the annoying maze feature even more annoying. Why not just put in a script that lets you press "A" and jump wherever you want. Open up your game and let people play in it.

I want to be overwhelmed by greatness in this battle!

This game also uses GTBS, which seems more like an after thought than a main feature at this point. I mean where are all the battles? It seems like most of the game you're wandering around wanting to find the battle. And when you find it, with all your glorious 4 character team, you can only choose 2 of them to place into the battle map. And can I talk about how slow it is to go through this battle with only 2 actors? I also noticed that the movement distance is way too short and there didn't seem to be any long range attacks, which would be beneficial.

In summary this game is about a man who is feeling down. It takes place in a swamp where you can jump around. And it also has the GTBS battle system. (Sounds familiar.) It has excellent graphics and sound, but the maps don't let you explore the world. It is hindered by terrible jumping and a battle system that is currently underdeveloped. In essence it's a game that needs a bit more love. I'll refrain from giving it a score at this time and hope that sometime in the future it becomes the game it should be.

I definitely remember there being tiles that could be considered impassible that could be confused as a bush-tiles. There might have been a private demo that I pushed out that had some of those tiles as passable, but, obviously, it was reverted back at some point. I, uh, guess I didn't say anything because my attention was elsewhere? Welp!

I seem to remember a conversation about what battles would be in this game. Like, Cap_H had this list of 11 items, each item listing what creatures would be encountered, and even what party members would be available for those fights. The concept mostly carried over, though, some modifications were made to show more characters, and variations in strategy. For example, I don't think Harold and Kloe were supposed to join the party until after the party gained access to Dago's boat? I could be corrected on this point!

*Edit: Anyways, thanks for the review!

Might be working again.
There's is some exploring in this stage, you just need to find a path (the second path).
Passability should be ok here.
Thanks for taking an early look at it.
