Let's DANCE!!!

Gladiator's True Purpose
This game was made for the "Swap in the Middle with You" 2016 event by Superstroke and Rine. This means that the game was divided in two halves and each was done by one developer before passing the game to the other.

This is a short event game made with RPG Maker VX Ace that won't take you more than 20 minutes to complete, and it's the story of an orc (called "unfortunate orc"). An orc gladiator, to be precise, and we know what gladiator usually does: he fights! All goes well because our protagonist easily survives the 1-to-1 battles, but then he decides to rebel with the help of his jailer against the arena master, and to do this he'll use the power... OF DANCE!

Is this the end? NO!!! That's the beginning... of the second part of the game!

Uhm yes, that's the plot. To be honest the first half is a rather boring series of cutscenes and encounters where the orc has to fight a series of opponents, men and creatures, using the default RPG Maker VX Ace system: battles after battles the orc increases his level eraning new skills like bandages that are use to heal and Flurry that's used to attack several times. There's not much to say about this part, just a series of encounters without interactions or exploration, just some cutscenes of our orc inside his cell. Also the arena is slightly asymmetric and this annoyed me a lot!

The second part is more interesting: it's about the rebellion of our orc and the dance battles. While this part still is totally linear and extremely simple at least there is some humor and I found it pretty entertaining! This part includes Pokemon references and the power of friendship, but also freestyle dancing! This is done mashing directional buttons, and while it's totally stupid I like this silliness

Concerning music and visuals there is not much to say, the game is all about RTPs or maybe not, well I am not so sure for a couple of cutscene (for the backgrounds seen in the beginning and ending of the second half, still I am not sure) in any case graphics is not the strong point of this game (the humor instead... well for me it was!)

Too bad, my friend! no one can stop us now, NO ONE!

Final Verdict
Gladiator's True Purpose is a stange game to rate since it's linear and it's unlikely you 'd play more than once... but despite its simplicity it entertained me. I do not mind that the two parts are rather different, on the contrary the passage from a grim story to a parody really makes the game interesting to play, well it's pretty short but I liked the idea. I had fun, and that was good, I mean it's an event game and I did not expect a lot, still it wasn't too bad. Ok, very short but at least well thought out, not just a boring dungeons with average random battles.
