BETA is a lighthearted comedy RPG. You play as Roth, your typical RPG hero who likes to punch things and show off his combat skills. He runs errands for the town folks and his friends sleepy Thieme and brutal Rage. The game is filled with a lot of funny tropes from many RPGs and classic games: from jigglypuff punchbag to Zelda complaining about Link's inability to talk (and take 1000GP from her).

They are no turn-based battles in this game. All conflict situations lead to custom hand crafted minigames. It's a good idea to ditch turn-based battles in favor of minigames for a better comedy effect. The minigames have unique mechanics, custom assets and are fun to play. If you fail at one you can immediately retry and optionally ask for a hint or lower the difficulty. This is a clever design choice to help players facing a challenge that's a bit too difficult. On 2 of the minigames, I lowered the difficulty one notch so I was able to enjoy the rest of the game.

Music selections in this game perfectly fit the action and scenes; reinforcing the comedy effect. Some of the music and sounds have been specifically edited for this game.

All areas in the game make excellent use of the RTP. The animations cleverly combine asset elements to climb on walls, Thieme leaving a hole after he falls from high and Rage swimming in the lava. There is also a great attention to details; like the jigglypuff turning their heads when you explore the caves that reminded me of the creatures high in the tree branches of Secret of Evermore dark forest. Roth always says a lot of funny comments when interacting whit objects like "Nice pixels". There is this very weird moment when a barrel rolls in one direction but its rotation animation is perpendicular to the rolling direction... and it made me laugh. There is also this brilliant moment when you break into the editor: hilarious.

As you progress in the game, you unlock new outfits for Roth. You can change your outfit from the inventory menu at any time you have access to the menu. Every outfit is unique, brings visual variety and comes with the full set of face expressions for the dialogues and menus. I changed outfit regularly. Wearing the 10th anniversary suit was perfect to step into the scientist's machine, Matrix style!

I played the game using EasyRPG in Linux. It works great! Right now, we need to unpack the zip archive then the lha archive inside it to play. It would be much more convenient to have just the game, that's in the lha archive, in a zip archive. Including the "How To Play" and "Walkthrough" text files are good ideas tho I only opened them after completing the game.

Overall, BETA is a very enjoyable comedy game about a hero doing "heroic" things!

Minor bugs:
The pirate says "from the people in the villa villa next to this jail.". He says "villa" twice.
To the farmer "I'll buy up all the milk you have at price.". Roth should say "at your price".
To the defeated ninja "I'm a natural, when it comes to kicking butt." There is a missing word.
After wining the Charizard, the kids move fast again but over a much larger area and 2 of them get stuck between the trees to the right.

South of the Gielinor Bank, they are comfortable leather boots displaying this message: "What do these here?". It should be "What do these do here?".
After we helped the scientist find most of the essences and take a walk at night, we can't walk where the kids usually run even now that they are away. And we can't climb the vines on the villa. Later, the kids are playing in the woods but still can't walk where they were in town.

The Walkthrough contains tabs that ruin the text and border alignments. Using spaces instead of tabs would preserve character alignment on any text application.

For the "1+1" question, the choices could include "10", which is correct in binary.
