Heart-pumping horror!

I'm quite new to the RPG Maker/Indie gaming scene, and i decided to see what the horror is like around here. At first i was ominous, if not interested to see if a good horror game could be pulled-off using an engine such as RPG Maker VX Ace. In the case of Lamia Nox i was pleasantly surprised.

I admit that i started out the game expecting dissapointment, however TheRexman221 has managed to create a great atmosphere that really got my heart pumping. A combo of creepy settings, intelligent lighting and sudden bursts of sound had me wishing i hadn't closed the curtains before playing. Take heed to the pre-game message telling you to wear headphones; it really pays off!

There's no hack-and-slash fighting, it's mainly a puzzle-solving game. The maps were solid enough for this to not be a problem even if you're not a fan of puzzle games. The sheer atmosphere of tension gave you the impression that an attack was about to jump upon you at any moment!

The graphics were very well done, and the music was perfect for a game of this genre. However, i would have one bone to pick. Despite a couple of clever plot-twists, i found the story a tad unoriginal. It definately won't have me rolling in my sleep tonight and be giving me nightmares. Don't get me wrong, it was a plot worthy of the game, definately scary and in the genre, but nothing really sticks with you. The horror fan once again finds himself wondering around a haunted house and a scary forest, woo!

Without wanting to trigger a spoiler alert, there was one point that frustrated me, i was either totally noobing-out or the game was just a bit too hard! You need quick reactions to fare well in Lamia Nox! That being said, i thoroughly enjoyed this unfortunately quite short game (however there are several endings), and i would definately reccomend it to anyone looking to charge-up their heartbeat in a short amount of time!
