Sacred Reviews: Guardian Angel (Demo)

Intro

"Guardian Angel" is a turn-based RPG that was being developed by Eventing_Guy using RPG Maker XP. Unfortunately this project never got past the early demo phase. In fact, the demo itself only contains around 15 minutes worth of content. As for why this project ultimately failed. The best lead I have is from a post by the developer from September 16, 2011, where he mentions having issues with writer's block among other things.

As of now I tinkering with my game: RMXP

- Trying to flesh out Characters / Story Line. (curently have writer's block)
- Thinking about combat "styles" for the last 3/6 Main characters.
- Making the basic layout for maps, then re-mapping it.

I'm guessing these issues were never fully resolved so this project was just quietly retired. So much so the developer didn't even feel the need to change the game's status to cancelled or on hiatus. At least this is my best educated guess. I'd ask the developer but they haven't made any posts since the one quoted. So getting a hold of them to ask about this project is pretty unlikely. Though, I suppose at the end of the day it really doesn't matter for the purposes of this review why this project died. After all, I'm here to discuss what was released to the public, but I can't help but be curious about the reasons behind all of these old projects that were never finished.

Story
Summary

The game begins with our main character, Sarah, getting zapped by her grandfather for being lazy and not getting out of bed in a timely manner. The player than gets to experience the joys of doing some simple chores for grandpa zappy by picking up his laundry, bringing him his lunch like your a delivery worker for DoorDash, and tracking down a merchant in order to pick up some special ingredients he ordered a while ago. And that's the entirety of the demo. You just get to do a few chores for a crotchety old man that loves liver and beans. A food choice that just makes me think of "Doug Funny" and that episode centered around liver and onions.

Strengths/Weaknesses

While doing chores isn't that fun in my opinion. It does serve as a good way to introduce the character and give her some personality by having her playoff her grandpa. On the other hand it's hard to deny that doing chores really sucks.

Gameplay

Outside of running around and doing a few errands the game does include two battles with bees. Yes, the greatest enemy in all of existence if Nicholas Cage's response in The Wicker Man (2006) is anything to go by. At any rate these battles are pretty easy with the player able to just whack them to death with their staff. Albeit the player does have a healing spell if they feel like they need it or if they want to heal any of the kids during the big final fight at the end of the demo. So despite being a mage it appears Sarah really isn't versed in offensive magic which is a bit of a let down.

If anything the most noticeable aspect of the combat system is that instead of the default turn-based system used by RPG Maker XP the developer decided to implement an active-time battle system. A system I'm not particularly fond of, but considering the only fights in the demo just boil down to spam your regular attack until the enemy dies. This system really doesn't bother me that much in this case since the demo doesn't really contain any fights where I'd need to flip through the menu while engaging an enemy. Though if this game had gone on longer I probably would have been annoyed by it since you can't apparently set this system to passive mode.

Graphics

On the graphical side of things the game largely relies on the RTP for RPG Maker XP. As such, I don't have a lot to say about the game when it comes to this category since the RTP assets are good in my opinion, but a bit overused at this point, but on a brighter note the game does use a custom title screen.

Though considering how the words Guardian Angel are just stapled on top of the image I'm pretty sure this image was found online. And a reverse image search appears to confirm this.

Sound

Sound wise the game kicks off with a title song that feels really out of place in my opinion for two reasons. The first reason is the song Deep Inside Of from "Sonic Adventures 2" is really tense and sets a tone of urgency, but really doesn't feel like an epic opening for a grand adventure. Additionally the song really doesn't fit the setting which appears to be standard fantasy fare with small villages and people that wield both swords and sorcery. Outside of that blunder the rest of the songs and sound effects are alright, but nothing special in my opinion.

Conclusion

"Guardian Angel" does appear to be a project that had potential in my opinion. So it ultimately falling to the wayside is rather disappointing. Oh well, at least the demo for this project is still available. That's more than can be said for a lot of other old games on this site at this point. At the same time the only reason to really look at the demo at this point in time is if your looking for a short project to review.
