Tavern updates and ax testing

Here are a few updates on the last download of Back From the Tavern.

The true type font library sometimes causes the text to not get displayed. The new download now display text as images, thus removing the use of the true type font library.

I played around with the ax to improve its hit detection. Of course ax testing led to some collateral damages.

Tavern download update

The download has been updated with the following corrections:
1) Give more time to complete map 3.
2) The game over sequence shows only once per map. Subsequent loss skip the game over sequence for fast retrials.
3) Soldiers no longer accept direction orders that tells them to go in the direction they are already going. This prevents wasting direction orders and ease controlling soldiers that are close to each other.

Enjoy !

Download available

The download is ready for you to play !

The development of the game was somewhat chaotic. I had to leave out a fair number of features so I hope you like the core mechanics of Back From the Tavern.

Your feedback is very welcome !

Progress Report

Ax wielding

It took longer that expected to make the ax feature work right. The initial version was tiled-based and I had to upgrade it to better fitting collision boxes. Rendering of trees also needed a complete overhaul. And of course a drunken soldier wielding an ax is a serious threat to his comrades ... so I needed to code the consequences !

Game Design

Cut down trees

I'm working on an ax feature to cut your way trough the woods. Cutting down trees (and some other stuff) feels great but I'm not too happy with the visual result. I hope to find a solution and not have to cut out this feature.

Request

Should I include the story of the game in its description ?

The story of the game is as unepic as it can get:

Your grandchildren come to visit you and ask you to tell them a story. You tell them about the time you spend as commander in a past war. But all you can remember are those difficult returns from the taverns. You know, those times were you struggled to get yourself and your soldiers back from the tavern to reach the camp before the general noticed your absence and assign you latrines clean up duty as punishment. So you try to build an epic war story for your grandchildren while reliving your tavern return memories.
