IGNORING IGNORANCE: UM, WHAT.
Posts
...why was my civil and noninflammatory question about the new ignore function randomly trashed? I'm very interested in discussing it as part of this community and the atmosphere RMN is trying to move toward. (Note: unexplained deletion of threads does not add to a positive atmosphere.)
It should at least be given an answer instead of being thrown away. As if that will solve any problems.
I thought it was a necessary thread, considering its eventual consequences, and was waiting for the concerned admins to answer... very surprised and not in a good way, this deserves to be discussed, imo.

-So, can somebody give me a good reason why we should have the ignore function? It sounds like a great way to mess up threads and hurt the community as a whole.
-I didn't even know we had an ignore function until you mentioned it.
-I suppose it's only really good for blocking a user that's harassing you, but I'm not sure that's such a big problem around here. *ignores Craze
-Yeah, it's a potential mess... I'd complain about it, but I'm afraid I'll end up in (even more) people's ignored lists. =P
-In all seriousness, I just hope nobody uses it. And if they do, then some 'hilarity' will ensue, eventually, I guess...
-Users that genuinely need to be blocked by another user probably shouldn't be here anyway.

One couldn't put things more clearly, thanks for the thread.
And, yes, considering that "Users that genuinely need to be blocked by another user probably shouldn't be here anyway. "
I want to put these posts here, because I think they sum up all the good statements one can make on the subject.

Only two replies in this topic so far, both by staff members and neither is aware of the new updates or what's going on here! Makes me wonder who is it that does all the decisions here!
On the subject though, is there any serious harm that ignoring could cause?

Oh hey, look at that! There's is an ignore option on users now. Also, an ignore list http://rpgmaker.net/account/ignores/
I am going to ignore all of you now.
The harm is that you could potentially get ignored, I guess.

Imagine a discussion where 2,3 people are ignored by some one, these people have arguments that other people discuss, but not the one who ignored them : what sort of dicussion do you get? imagine this multiplied by 3 or 4, you end up in a inextricable mess, but the worst I think, is that it destroys all idea of community : community is dealing with one another, even when it's difficult, with the ignoring feature, you end up, eventually, having little cliques who discuss amongst themselves, i.e. no more community.
1) It TOTALLY REMOVES the post - you don't even know that a person has posted something, which is a great way to mess up the flow of a discussion, and -
2) This forum/site is supposed to be indie game devs coming together to make, discuss and criticize games. Say what you will about the RM* community being an incestuous cesspool, clicking the "ignore" button ruins the idea of a public discussion forum.
3) If somebody should be ignored, then maybe they should be banned instead? Petty inter-user squabbles are not going to be solved by pretending the problem isn't there. (They require lots and lots of gifs.)

It can also mess up threads when people repeat themselves or get annoyed when someone doesn't respond (because they're ignored). Not to mention asking stuff like "can you say what he said because I'm ignoring that guy".
Basically I can't come up with one good thing an ignore function could do. But that's just me I suppose.
Edit: two posts while I was writing.

stuff
Users have to choose to ignore. If there are no random public outbursts that are a result of lingering inter-user squabbles, I doubt there will be any actual ignores.
Hey, Craze, you're sure you didn't ignore me, you're saying exactly the same thing I am!? if not, which I think is the case considering you seem to be against ignoring, it goes to show that new feature is totally useless, if you want to ignore a member, you just do, no need for an ignore button for that (no offense, just surprised at the similarity of the posts!)
Edit : talking about the ones before, but again! (didn't see your last one when I posted this).

Ankylo's still our code guy, right? Perhaps he could help us get to the bottom of this.
Also, yeah, the ignore feature completely removing the posts of the ignored users does have serious potential to mess up forum conversations. If we are to keep this system, perhaps ignored users should only have their posts hidden in Hide tags instead.
Though that's if and only if we do keep the system; it still seems pretty pointless.

Well, this is something that has been bothering me as well, and to take in case a point, there is a phenomon on facebook where certain people would ignore you, not because they hate you, but rather because you are friends with thier friends (I have had this happen twice, only to have to use the other guy to communicate), and thus you end up with a example chat like this:
See what I mean? I never met the kid, let alone talked to him, but he blocked me, thus making my conversation with another into a unreadable mess.
Basically, this is my greatest worry for RMN, for the same reasons as people deleting posts, that it ruins any sense of solid topics, see?

Me: Hey hear about skyrim? I am building a new comp for it.
Him: Oh yeah, that sounds awesome. Show me the comp once it is done. I know right?! It is like it is a bird and a dinosaur at the same time!
Me:Wait, what?
Him: Oh, I just killed thirty of the things. Hmm? What is it, Facesforce?
Me: :L What are you talking about, I never brought up the dragons yet.
Him: Oh, I was talking to spazz. Maybe he blocked you.
Me: Who?
Him: Yeah man, totally sweet house!

Ignore lists are one way. If I ignore you I can't see your posts but you can see mine. I do agree that ignoring people shouldn't completely remove them. I think a better solution would be where the post is made completely minimal. The user column is just a username, no avatar or makerscore or anything else. The post column is just the data+time and "This user is on your ignore list". You can see that somebody you ignored posted at minimal screen real estate so you can still have an idea of the conversation flow.
I'm glad it's here though, thanks Ankylo!

I can just as easily ignore both of you two's posts in my mind and discuss the topic at large with or without a site-side Ignore function, what exactly is the problem?
As I see it, this topic is nothing but over-exaggeration, fear-mongering, and needless incitation of drama.

My larger issue is how the staff apparently does not communicate at all.
For what it's worth, I support the addition of this feature. I'm not sure I'll ever use it, but I have no problem with it being there.
(Of course no one can see this post because the entire forum has ignored me by now.)
