CLASSIC/OLDER GAME PROFILES?

Everyone has that one game that they really wish had a game page so they could show appreciation or discuss it, but isn't on the site. Older games whose creators have dropped off the map or can't be found, obscure games that may be in another language, etc.

So how about some sort of classic/old/obscure game profile thingy? A simple page - set up by someone (most likely a dummy account expressly set for this purpose so as not to abuse MS or credit) containing only a description, a few screenshots and maybe an off-site download - where fans can talk about their experiences and express their enjoyment of the game.

Maybe in their own section or under a 'classic/obscure' tag?

I don't know, but it could be an good way to create a more cohesive collection.

Thoughts on this?
Sounds really nice. Although, the obscure request thread already has formed a cohesive list of available/unavailable games. It's just not properly divided for discussions. Or based for discussion at all since it's just a request thread.

I thought about hosting an "RM archive" to act as a replacement for the obscure/rare games topic I made. But as of now I lack the funds or know how im actually going to make it at the moment.

Idk I think RMN's site policy should be strictly user submitted content. If a feature like this would actually come to light it would have to be greatly separated from the current games here. Plus you have to worry about abuse. There's also the issue of difference between an RM game made in 2004 and an offsite RM game like Exit Fate if any user can submit an "oldschool" game. I sort of like the way it is even if it means relying on sites like megaupload.

tbh I do not see many people talk about old classics that are already up here on RMN. The thread I made is enough.

I think the issue at hand is more about reliability of the game downloads rather than discussions of them. Megaupload and its cousins are pretty flaky for stuff like this.

That said, RMN's policy always was to have games uploaded by their creators with certain exceptions like game translations (to my knowledge). So unless Holb begins to think otherwise on the matter, it's probably going to be status quo as usual. =\
Hence the idea - sometimes creators disappear from the net and their games are left a distant memory. For example: Imagine if kentona* just up and disappeared and Heroes Realm wasn't on the site. We'd have to wait until he reappeared before having the game added and it would be such a travesty!

Also, the idea behind an anonymous dummy account that is run by the staff is so MS isn't abused. Also, the descriptions would have all the proper credits in them so that people know who made what. If the creator every turns up again they can move it over to their account fairly easily.

So basically the idea is that an RM member would nominate a game for the classic archive - credits, link and description necessary. Then the appropriate staffer logs into the dummy account and adds it. Maybe update once a month or so?

As I said, it's just an idea.

*Used kentona because he's a beloved, well-known figure and HR is awesome! Never leave us, kenton! ;P
I like this idea. Would be cool to have some sort of "Legacy" archive of games by authors who are no longer around.

Would Americana Dawn count as such a game?

Think about it - some people, for whatever reason, don't want their game associated with RMN, and we should respect that.
No, Americana Dawn wouldn't count because:
a - YDS has not vanished from the face of the internet
b - it's not a classic game (think Legion Saga or Final Fantasy Dreams)
c - she has expressly shown she doesn't want the game on this site

Hence the staff presence for approval/addition, so things like that don't happen.

Well, I thought it was a good idea anyway, but it may be too much trouble. Perhaps at a future point in time.

I always wanted to put up or see gamepages for Kamaus games, Philosophers Stone, Genesis Project series, FF:Endless Nova, Devil Hunter, Legacy001 games, The Most Stupidest Game Ever Re-duh, etc.

Y'know the games from people you know aren't coming back and are quite old now. I think this idea is great, I think I tried to ask the same thing when WIP was still here.
MAYBE I'LL JUST LEAVE THEN.

Anywho, this has me torn - some classic games would benefit from having a game here, but the philosophy of having the creator host their game here themselves is a good one. I am not sure how people would feel if we hosted their games without their consent, and in any event I am not about to allow that to happen.

So, as a compromise, I think I might make a bulletin ( http://rpgmaker.net/bulletins/ ) for each engine that have these "archival" games. The bulletin would I guess be a list of games and a download link, (and maybe a description and a thumbnail? I don't know).

As long as the classic games are hosted at a reliable location (read: here), I don't think beautiful presentations in the style of game profiles and so forth are that important.

Take the Rare Games topic we currently have as an example: It's been doing the job pretty well, the only problem is that its completely reliant on unreliable, 3rd party file-sharing services like Megaupload.

We can do better for the classics we've come to love and/or respect, couldn't we? (っ´ω`)っ
SegNin just needs to make his harddrive publicly available.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Well the idea in the original post wasn't for us to host it. It was to create a game profile with "maybe an off-site download". I would actually advice against the off-site download being officially added by staff members, but can definitely see why people might want a discussion page. We have lots of game profiles without downloads, and I don't think that a discussion page would be any sort of infringement on the author (any more than starting a fan website of their game would be). If users decide to upload the game and link to it in the comments of the game page, well, that's probably fine. From both a legal and ethical standpoint, I think that's very different from staff-sanctioned links or file hosting.

That said I'm not sure how useful this would be. More or less all the game page discussion I see is directed at the game author. Even simple comments like "Whoa, cool graphics" seem pretty pointless when the author isn't there to hear them. But then again, GameFAQs has an entire forum for each game, so without an author there to provide easy answers, maybe they'd actually get more gameplay discussion and speculation.
Yeah, the download thing was more an 'if thou must' idea. I'm more for the game page where discussion could be held (like game pages are supposed to be like).

Just something small where fans can pay homage to the greats of the past. ;P

The problem I forsee with the game-profiles-only approach is that, because the games are much less accessible on average, there isn't going to be as much spontaenous discussion on the games unlike your average game readily hosted here or elsewhere.

I'm all for seeing game profiles of Legion Saga, The Chronicles of Haledos, or Romancing Walker, but what's the point if the players don't know what the games are and/or can't play the games in question to discuss about them?

Perhaps an effort should be made to contact the makers of these games, and ask if they can be hosted either my the creator making an account or letting an admin do it.

EDIT:
Or maybe just spruce up the thread we already have with images and such ( unless it already has these. )

Reliable hosting could even be made for them, I think amazon has some pretty good deals on free and cheap hosting.

This. I still think it's best if we got the original creators permission first before we post anything up, unless they've vanished off the face of the earth for five years+
