ELECTRONIC ENTERTAINMENT EXPOSITION 2011
Posts
So, it's that time of the year again, when the gaming companies all converge on Los Angeles and reveal their big projects for the next year or two.
We've had topics here on RMN the past two years, and since a couple of companies can't seem to wait until the actual conference to do their announcing, I figured I might as well come OUT OF FUCKING NOWHERE (as is my M.O.) to start this year's topic up.
Notable Stuff So Far:
- Konami announced HD collections of Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, and ZONE OF THE ENDERS (!!!!) for the PS3, and that games that can go over to the NGP can also have their saves transferred to the device as well. Kojima also announced that he's working on a multi-platform project with a brand new "Fox Engine".
- Speaking of the NGP, apparently it's going to be officially unveiled and given the title of PS VITA.
- Other Konami announcements: New Silent Hill game for the NGP (that hasn't even been concept approved by Sony yet... might be a bit early to announce it, but whatever), and apparently at the end of their conference a blast of flame curled into the familiar Contra "C" logo, with text saying "THEY RETURN". Contra reboot, anyone?
- A hacking group by the name of Lulz Security has claimed that they have hacked into Sony Pictures and taken over 1 million usernames and passwords... they further claim that the information was stored in PLAINTEXT and that PSN is still not secure. Could another breach of disasterous proportions be waiting to derail Sony's already tenuous comeback?
- On the Microsoft side of the three-way battle, rumors are flying that Project Orapa will be unveiled this year, and that it is a new tier of paid Xbox Live membership, Diamond, with IPTV functionality set to be launched by November 15th.
- Nintendo's new console, codenamed Project Cafe, will be unveiled as well. Rumors abound about how Nintendo will top the Wii and 3DS. Not much to say on this one, they've been keeping shit pretty close to the chest.
- Notable trailers so far:
Dark Souls
Tomb Raider
Soul Calibur V
Uncharted 3 Co-Op trailer

Can't wait for Nintendo's conference. Microsoft's was dire and Sony's one was decent. Vita looks affordable this time around as well compared to the PSP/DS era.
Oh yeah, I get to see how old Square-Enix will further disappoint me tomorrow. Well, I am not sure the exact day their presentation is. But its soon!

I was quite impressed with the PSV's showing. The price was definitely a pleasant surprise.
This is pretty much my opinion so far. I also liked Uncharted 3's showing, and Tomb Raider looked decent at the Xbox conference as long as they tone down the goddamn groaning from Lara's VA sometime between now and Holiday 2012.
I'm also curious to see how the new Kinect dashboard stuff works out, and I kind of like the ways it was shown off in Mass Effect 3 and Ghost Recon. Kinect Disneyland and Star Wars can go take a long walk off a short pier, though. Goddamn those were awkward.
edit: Also, GOOD JOB JEREMY ohohohoohohohohohohohoh that was HILARIOUS am i right guys lol

So this morning when I woke up. I watched the Nintendo E3 presentation.
And damn. That new Wii U looks pretty fucking sweet. I mean I know it's all a bit of propaganda and it probably won't work as well as it seems. (I mean I thought Kinect looked pretty awesome on the Microsoft presentation too. And also the voice control stuff)
But that new Nintendo console... Like those developers said in that ad-reel... It really can do an incredible amount of stuff! I mean ANYTHING can happen with that machine. The only thing I really wonder about though is the price. A thing like that can't be too cheap. Even if it isn't a graphical monsterhouse. (let's also hope it has a proper hard drive)

It's not just console names, but even some video games coming out of Japan have some strange names (in English, no less). I'm wondering what the hell the translators think sometimes?
Wii U, one bad thing to say:
It'll match this gen's Xbox and PlayStation graphical qualities... But in 2012. :/
In 2013, Microsoft and Sony will release their alleged successors and again Nintendo's product will fall to the crappy graphics but great party-time first party software. It's as Metallica would say: Sad but True.
I've been following the live feeds all day, and one thing that impresses me is Skyrim. Hold-My-Mother-Fucking-Shit, I have died and gone to Valhalla.

Definitely agree. Really it means more to me than all the other games they showed. This is superficial to say, but holy hell were the Oblivion character models ugly. They were so bad I could never look past that. I am so glad they cleaned this up to make the game look all evenly good. I really hope they will make up for the horrible voice acting too.
The only game that mildly caught my attention was the Smash4 announcement. Even then, I'm highly skeptical about it. The Wii U is alright; the anatomy of the controller though is goofy. I mean, the analog sticks are ABOVE the directional pad! Innovative or not, there's no excuse of having a bad button layout. With that said, I actually haven't played with the thing yet, so my complaint remains moot.
I heard that the Wii U uses the Wiimotes as a standard controller, and that the tablet is kind of an "extra" controller (and that only 1 can be connected at a time). True?
author=kentonaSo it seems. However it also seems they're open to making games compatible with multiple controllers. So we'll see. Maybe it'll start out without extras and later they'll add support for two controllers and purchasable extra controllers.

It's probably a price issue. Those tablet-controllers must cost more than the console :D
Ehhh, I'm not so enthusiastic about Nintendo's new controller gimmick. I think the HD was a nice move (finally) but that new controller doesn't look like... well that it should be a controller. More like something that needs to come along with me and play on the road. I think there's plenty of room for improvement for the precision of the wiimote and the graphics, and they should simply do that and developers will storm over to make games (which the Wii desperately needs as it is.)
author=NatookApparently, you're not the only one:

Wow, no unexpected surprises this year at all! Pretty much every new announcement had been predicted a long time ago. Big disappointment for me this year. Hope there are some big jRPG announcements at TGS this year.

Wasn't that pretty obvious though? The Wii U versions of those games probably aren't even in pre-alpha stages yet.
Overall so far Wii U has me pretty damn excited. It seems like an awesome thing but I know my expectations will be lowered as we get to know more about the restrictions and the bad things about the Wii U.
The other thing awesome so far about E3 is Battle-fucking-field fucking 3. Oh man... Time to get my shoot on.
