EVENT/ARTICLE SUBSCRIPTIONS

Is there a way/plans to make a way to unsubscribe from events (Super RMN Bros 2, specifically) or articles that I've commented on? Just because I leave one comment doesn't mean I want to hear every single spambot's reply or pay attention to SRMNB2 for months.
Ideally, there would be a button that says "Unsubscribe" next to a notice when you receive it in your notices box. Kinda like how there's a "Mark as Spam" button in your Gmail inbox.
Really, articles/tutorials/events should handle subscriptions like games. You select subscribe and you get notices. You click unsubscribe and you don't get any more notices. Submitting an entry for an event should be an automatic subscription as if they clicked subscribe so they could unsubscribe.
Do we really need subscriptions for articles and tutorials? They're kind of a one time event, where as the whole point of a game subscription is to follow all of the updates that happens over its lifespan. Thoughts?
rcholbert: I think you're not getting it. These events are subscribed to you automatically. I'm still getting notices from the Game Chill compo back in '09, and all I'm getting are bots and people asking why no one has done anything about it.
So do something about it!
Old, old, old event's comment boxes should be locked. That would also remove the notices too. Otherwise its getting a bit annoying.

Radnen: I understood the conversation all too well. I was asking if we even needed to have notices for content like articles, tutorials, etc. instead of just putting a band-aid on the problem by disabling notices for them when they get old.
ONE LEVEL DEEPER.

We can take a couple of approaches here. I can give you an option in your account settings that lets you turn off notices for articles / tutorials and events separately however, this would be site wide - not on an individual basis. I can probably implement this right away.
We could turn off notices for articles / tutorials and / or events. I can also do this right away.
I could build article / tutorial / event subscriptions. I'm not sure how long this one would take, probably at least a week.

I would say we don't need them on articles or tutorials, but it would be nice to be able to manually sub/unsub to events.

Ok, I turned off notices for events that have finished. Let me know if you get any notices from past events.
I'd still like to be able to follow articles, there's been some good discussion generated from them in the past that I followed but didn't post in.
Auto-ending events works pretty well I think.

For events there's always a bit of post-event talk (especially leading up to results) so cancelling notices immediately when an event ends isn't really that good of an idea. However it's also hard to determine a proper cut-off date. I mean obviously I don't want Game Chill 2009 spam notices anymore but an event that ends on... say hypothetically April 16th. There's probably going to be some discussion on the event page afterwards (especially stuff like "did the right game win" or "when will we get our achievements").
It's also not incredibly easy to keep track of when there's new comments on stuff other than forum posts apart from notices. While the "latest posts" is helpful there's only five or so posts there.
As for articles I think it's especially useful for the authors of tutorials (but also other articles) to have notices. Often the contents of an article is supposed to be somewhat "timeless" and comments could appear at any time and it's useful for an author to know when someone comments. Especially if it's with a correction but also if it's something particularily insightful that would otherwise get lost.
Unlike forum posts it's not like an article gets bumped if there's something new in it.
I guess I'm all for as much user-managed subscription as possible. Because without it the forums really will continue to be the only viable place of communicating. (in fact it would be pretty sweet to be able to subscribe to individual blog posts too and not the whole game page. I also don't remember if a reviewer was automatically subscribed to his own review. I haven't reviewed anything in a while.)

why do people have such a hard time just ignoring notices :(
I like getting notices for old events/articles/reviews when there's new discussion.

Well hypothetically getting five hundred notices from one thing I'm not even interested in (super rmn bros 2) could get in the way from all those notices from things I've subscribed to (manually and voluntarily) that I actually want to see.
Though I guess if we could mark certain notices as spam and then they could be put into the spam notices folder of notices... or something...

I could live with event subscriptions and not article subs; events get way more chatter caused by making just one comment.
Thanks for working on this!

Well, maybe we can come up with a consensus on how long you should get event notices after an event is finished by default? A month? Two Weeks?
I will work on user settings for turning off event / article / tutorial notices.
The options will be:
Turn off article notices
Turn off tutorial notices
Turn off event notices X time frame after event is finished
Let me know if you have any other ideas / suggestions!

Ok. This is now live. You can set your options by going to your account and then the account tab and settings (I know, it's a bit hidden). You can choose to turn off article / tutorial notices (for articles / tutorials that you've commented on, you still get notices if you are the author). You can also turn off getting notices for events that finished more than 2 weeks ago. Everyone will still get notices for up to 2 weeks after an event has finished.
Right now, everything is set to the default (all notices on), so you will have to actually go change your settings to have them take effect.
Let me know if you see anything weird! (like no notices when you should get a notice or double notices).
